Expert Analysis
Dame Lester | Prep Redzone Scout
Transferred from Leuzinger to Mater Dei
Sekona has prototypical QB size at 6-2 to 6-3, 225-230 pounds—sturdy frame with room to refine, already drawing early offers from Arizona, Colorado State, and Hawaii. As a sophomore starter at Leuzinger, completed 92-of-147 (62.6%) for 1,691 yards, 22 TDs, and just 4 INTs; led with poise, benefiting from dad as OC. His arm strength shines on deep outs and posts; good zip, touch on layers, and mobility to escape. At Mater Dei, he’ll battle in a loaded room but the competition sharpens tools. Strengths: Leadership, low turnover rate; processes defenses well. Needs to quicken footwork and add escapability. Projection: Power 5 starter with NFL traits if he dominates at MD; pedigree and size scream blue-chip upside in a pro-style offense.

Sekona is one of the top young quarterbacks in the state and checks into our rankings as a top five player at his position. He is a dual-threat and extremely powerful runner that gets downhill quickly and is tough to tackle in the open field. He has natural forward lean, looks for contact in the hole while accelerating and buying time with his feet and getting the ball out quick. He can fit throws into tight windows and does a good job throwing his receivers open with good touch and velocity on the ball over the top. He throws a tight spiral, and is accurate both inside and outside of the pocket while having a high IQ and strong pocket presence.

Sekona checks into our rankings as a top five passer in his class across the state, and is a physically imposing passer that is a true dual-threat with a big time arm downfield. He has a very strong build, shows he can deliver the ball downfield into tight windows and leads his receivers open on both in breaking and out breaking routes. Able to make all the throws at all three levels, he is a very physical and violent runner in space that can break tackles in the open field, shows a open field burst and can operate smoothly while running the ball in-between the tackles. Sekona is a powerful runner inside with the speed to break away and looks for contact, which is rare for a quarterback his age. Currently, he holds offers from Arizona, ASU, Hawaii and Arkansas.

Made good reads and got rid of the ball quickly once settled down after first series. #9 Russell has nice arm strength and ran the spread RPO system well, with solid mechanics that kept the defense on their heels. Threw two touchdown passes while hanging in the pocket knowing he would be hit. Ball placement on multiple throws shows he if mature and understand timing against pressure situations. Got the ball out in screens and ran smart when it was time to keep it. No turnovers for four quarters.
