Covering the country, I see literally tens of thousands of middle school football players every year. Some states feature middle school prospects--specifically 8th graders--that are really advanced in terms of having a social media presence, capturing quality film and looking towards the next level early. While there are some states where the recruiting hysteria that exists on the high school level, hasn't really trickled down to the middle school/junior high level. For better or for worse, below are the 2028 West Virginia prospects that have crossed my desk in some fashion or another. This is obviously not every 2028 prospect in the state, nor am I saying these are the best. These are simply who I've seen and where they project, in my opinion based off June 2024.

Position: Athlete

1.) Thorn was a thorn in the side for any team he played against last season as an 8th grader at Jackson Middle School, with numbers that tell the whole story. In eight games, had 29 receptions for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns and 19 carries for 3725 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, he recorded 74 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. On special teams, returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, recovered three onside kicks and blocked two extra point attempts.

Workman is a big kid that played primarily Quarterback and Defensive End during his 8th grade season this past fall. Built more like a Defensive End than a Quarterback as of June 2024, he was a chore for opposing defenses to bring down. More than just a big kid, Workman showed athleticism by returning kicks and not being afraid to take off and scramble when he needed to. Where he ultimately ends up playing long term could be up for debate, as his frame and ability allowed for the Tight End position to creep into my mind as a possibility.

After relocating from Utah to West Virginia, Villa will be taking the field this fall for the defending Class AAA WVSSAC State Champion, Martinsburg Bulldogs. Right now he's listed as an Athlete because depending on how he develops I can see him being a next level player at multiple positions. Watching his 8th grade film from Utah, Villa made som incredible plays at that Outside Linebacker/Defensive End/Edge position, where he was simply too athletic for the big Offensive Tackles he was lined up across from. I lost track of how many batted balls I saw him jump up and get a paw on. He's also a highly athletic kid that doesn't look out of place running routes as a bigger/thicker Wide Receiver on the offensive side of the ball. Time will tell, but look for him to make an immediate impact as a freshman.

As for as 2028s go in West Virginia, Porter is one of the most dynamic prospects in The Mountain State. He'll be off to Niro High School for the fall season, where he'll attempt to replace some of the production his brother, Nudy Hall, who graduates. Expect Porter to get a nice chunk of playing time in a Running Back/Slot Receiver type of role. Watching him on film, it's easy to see why he was named the Kanawha County MVP after a great 8th grade season at South Charleston Middle.

2.) Recruiting Priority - Developmental

[player_tooltip player_id='1221848' first='Grayson' last='Dinger'] | Fairmont - The only reason Dinger isn't listed as a High Priority, is a lack of film and not being able to see more of him. In the clips I have seen of him, he changes direction very well and appears to be put together. He's a Running Back/Linebacker type, with the Linebacker taking the lead right now in terms of projections. That said, I can't rule out a move to Strong Safety. His brother, [player_tooltip player_id='907233' first='Cannon' last='Dinger'], is highly ranked among other 2025 W. Virginia prospects and is a WR/FS that has picked up some FCS offers and a PWO from the Mountaineers.

[player_tooltip player_id='1311020' first='Isaiah' last='Waminan'] | Point Pleasant - There's a lot to be excited about when it comes to Waminan as a football player, just getting ready to begin his high school career. He lists himself at 5-foot-11 and 150-pounds with adequate muscle mass as well. He's a Wide Receiver/Defensive Back type with obvious length as a plus too. He falls under the Athlete distinction, due to not knowing how he'll continue to grow. Right now, as of June 2024, looks to be a Safety if I had to project him; However, bigger Cornerbacks and Wide Receivers are highly coveted. Either way, improving speed and quickness will help him in many ways, as he progresses.

3.) Recruiting Priority - Not Enough Information Available

[player_tooltip player_id='1222271' first='Elijah' last='Smith'] | John Adams Middle School - No film, private social media. Looks the part in pictures, also wrestles and runs track.

Position: Defensive Line

1.) As football continues to change and some positions around the country get on heaters in terms of popularity, Tyson has opened my eyes as an Edge defender. Not necessarily and Outside Linebacker, but not a Defensive End either. On tape, he's explosive and strong, which allows him to almost spring into the backfield off the snap. He plays Running Back on the offensive side of the ball and with that, comes excellent feet and quickness. In talking with our WV Prep Hoops counterparts, Tyson plays the same physical and hard-nosed style on the basketball court.

2.) Recruiting Priority - Developmental

[player_tooltip player_id='1310969' first='Paul' last='Cochran'] | Riverside - To be clear, I like a lot of Cochran brings to the table right now. He's a strong, thick kid at 5-foot-11 and 215-pounds. Currently benching 265 pounds and should be up near 300 in no time. I also love that he's a wrestler, as he finished 2nd at Heavyweight in the Region 4 West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association tournament this past February. Cochran also plays Offensive Line and is strong there, too. Comparatively across the country, as of June 2024, he's shorter/lighter in stature than a lot of the upper-echelon Defensive Ends and doesn't currently fit the mold (in terms of size/frame) of what the next level is looking for right now. He will certainly be a very good player over the next four years, and could easily develop into a player that goes well beyond that.

3.) Recruiting Priority - Not Enough Information Available

[player_tooltip player_id='1311031' first='David' last='Browning'] | Chapmanville - No film or social media readily available as of June 2024.

[player_tooltip player_id='1624429' first='Grayson' last='Ashley'] | Independence - Looks the part in pictures at 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, but there is no film or social media readily available as of June 2024.

[player_tooltip player_id='1260138' first='Steven' last='Kinney'] | Nitro - Talented wrestler that finished 4th in the state tournament this past February. Looks the part, but no film or social media readily available as of June 2024.

Position: Linebacker

1.) I make it a point to say it every time it makes sense, but I feel very strongly about the fact that kids who wrestle, often make the best tacklers on the football field. Kehler is a six-time West Virginia state wrestling champion and the ability certainly translates. While Kehler played Running Back and took direct snaps as a Quarterback on the offensive side of the ball during his 8th grade season, his play at Linebacker is what should excite folks. Watching him read and diagnose a play, then navigate the muck to get into position to make a play is text book. He plays fast and unrelenting.

As of June 2024, [player_tooltip player_id='951269' first='Colton' last='Roberson'] is the top 2028 Linebacker in West Virginia, in my humble opinion. Coming off an 8th grade season where he tallied 80 tackles, with 15 of them resulting in a loss, he checks every box in terms of an upcoming prospect that projects to be a highly recruited player. Size - at 6-foot and 175-pounds, he already has a muscled up frame that is ready for the pounding of Friday night lights. Speed - also a Running Back on the offensive side of the ball, he doesn't mess around with unnecessary movement and gets to where he's going at full speed. His 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns in seven games, personifies this. Athleticism - he defends the pass better than most DBs at this level and has the hips to turn and run with most RBs and TEs. Overall, he's simply a talented young man that schools will surely be after.

Like [player_tooltip player_id='1292038' first='Brody' last='Kehler'] and [player_tooltip player_id='951269' first='Colton' last='Roberson'], who are also prospects listed as High Priority Linebackers, Lambert was a force on both sides of the ball. This past season, Lambert was a catalyst for Logan Middle's undefeated season and Mid-Valley Athletic Conference title--its first since 2018. He was unstoppable at Running Back, using his tremendous size (listed at 6-foot-2, 215-pounds) to run over, around and through people. There's not too many 8th grade RBs at that size, that stay at Running Back for the duration of their playing days--which I why I think the traits Lambert has, translates to Linebacker so well. On top of the size and physicality on the gridiron, he also plays basketball--which translates to hand-eye coordination and spacial awareness.

Hailing from Morgantown, right there in the epicenter of a crazed Mountaineer fanbase, King is Linebacker to keep eyes on over the next four years. A two-sport athlete, he's also a standout as a Catcher on the baseball diamond. He brings that same toughness and athleticism to the Linebacker position. I got to watch Setliff twice in the past two years, both as a member of the Kentucky Future Stars program. When Setliff can get his paws on an opposing D-Linemen, there's not many that can push him away and defeat the block. As of June 2024, where Setliff lacks right now is mobility, agility and flexibility. In my opinion, he has to be inside right now to protect him from going against speedy Edge rushers. The power he plays with is unquestioned and is ideal for an offense that focuses running the ball with power between the tackles. He has a Howitzer for an arm and can throw the ball all over the field, from anywhere on the field. If you follow the blood lines and believe in genetics, there's no reason to believe Moody won't end up as one of the top 2028s in the state when all is said and done.

[player_tooltip player_id='1260139' first='Layne' last='Coffman'] | Nitro - Staying on the Nitro train, Coffman is another prospect whose name has crossed my desk, with positive thoughts. That said, he also has very minimal film readily available at this point. Also a 1st Basemen on the diamond, he's a taller kid at 6-foot and is listed in the 150-to-160-pound mark. Looking forward to our HS scouts being able to evaluate more.

[player_tooltip player_id='1221855' first='Crosby' last='Morris'] | Brooke - As of June 2024, I've only been able to track down four clips of Crosby from this past season (one of which being a defensive clip) and while there's certainly a lot that peeks my interest, I can't definitively deliver my thoughts because there's not enough film. Believe me, watching a 6-foot-3 WR in the 8th grade is certainly exciting but it's just not enough of a sample size. My hunch is that Morris, who also appears to be a heck of a basketball player too, is going to be a very good prospect once he adds some weight. Like [player_tooltip player_id='1251157' first='Elijah' last='Moody'], the only thing holding me up is enough film.

Position: Kicker/Defensive Back

2.) Recruiting Priority - Developmental

[player_tooltip player_id='1221859' first='Ben' last='Smith'] | Fairmont- I won't ever pretend to evaluate or give my thoughts on a prospect playing a position, that I have minimal knowledge of. That said, future Fairmont Kicker/Punter specialist [player_tooltip player_id='1221859' first='Ben' last='Smith'] is a name that came across my deck. As of earlier in June 2024, he was consistently hitting Field Goals from 30-yards out and has hit from as far out as 40.

[player_tooltip player_id='1221854' first='Shannon' last='Mitchell'] | Capital - Mitchell is another prospect that could/may easily find his way on to the priority list of 2028 prospects, once they get evaluated on the high school level. He has impressive clips in both pads, and 7v7, as both a Wide Receiver and Defensive Back. Has long legs on a shorter torso, which leads me to believe he's got a decent amount of growing left to do. I'm unsure on height (it's not listed anywhere) and that's an important metric, no matter how ya' slice it. That said, ball skills and ability check out. Keep an eye here.
