The Battle at the Beach passing tournament is the last major passing tournament featuring some of the top programs in the state.

Twenty schools participated in the event. Mission Viejo beat St. John Bosco for the championship. Charter Oak beat Capo Valley for the championship of the silver division.

Here are some of my notes on some of the teams and players who competed in the tournament.

- Mission Viejo is the 7-on-7 champion of the offseason. Nearly all of its skill players return from last season's state championship team. [player_tooltip player_id='1000890' first='Luke' last='Fahey'] and [player_tooltip player_id='406731' first='Draiden' last='Trudeau'] each looked very good at quarterback. [player_tooltip player_id='282688' first='Phillip' last='Bell'] made some very difficult catches and Cash Semonza has gotten rave reviews from coach Chad Johnson. [player_tooltip player_id='283628' first='Jeron' last='Jones'] and [player_tooltip player_id='723683' first='Dijon' last='Lee'] locked things down at cornerback. 6-foot-4 sophomore Max Markofski already runs a sub 11 100 meters and will make an impact this season.

https://twitter.com/mikehuntley63/status/1812259628765655279

- St. John Bosco played three quarterbacks: [player_tooltip player_id='401284' first='Matai' last='Fuiava'], Jack Nyman and [player_tooltip player_id='959174' first='Koa' last='Malau'ulu']. All three had moments and the freshman Malau'ulu impressed me. [player_tooltip player_id='212216' first='Christian' last='Davis'] and [player_tooltip player_id='401226' first='Carson' last='Clark'] impressed at receiver and tight end Austin Zebrowski may be an impact player this season in packages. [player_tooltip player_id='408739' first='Darren' last='Tubbs Jr']. is a freshman receiver coach Jason Negro said to keep an eye on.

- [player_tooltip player_id='283632' first='Josh' last='Holland'] was the MVP for Bosco's defense and he had a major interception against Mission Viejo in the championship game. [player_tooltip player_id='406738' first='Jacob' last='Holmes'] also had a big day along with sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='677270' first='Jashaun' last='Shaffer'].

https://twitter.com/Chris_I_Davis/status/1813301898935705761

https://twitter.com/KoaMalauulu1/status/1812670231917302098

- Centennial lost to Edison in the opening game of the tournament but bounced back until losing to eventual champion Mission Viejo. [player_tooltip player_id='406637' first='Cory' last='Butler'] had a big day receiving along with Dylan Wallner. Defensively, new Chaparral transfer [player_tooltip player_id='533261' first='Kuron' last='Jabari Jr']. was impressive along with Charles Castille.

https://twitter.com/latsondheimer/status/1812641197854499310

- Inglewood struggled but showed flashes of solid play on both sides of the ball. Freshman corner [player_tooltip player_id='819582' first='Jacob' last='Whitehead'] stood out as a shut down corner with good timing breaking up 50/50 balls.

- Capo Valley reached the finals of the silver bracket and with the exception of one game against Santa Margarita, was competitive with everyone it played. [player_tooltip player_id='595827' first='Tommy' last='Acosta'] looked sharper than he did at the South County tournament in my opinion and Cire Jefferson continues to impress me with his ability to track the ball in the air.

https://twitter.com/cirejefferson/status/1812592097540915664

- Santa Margarita was dominant until it ran into champion Mission Viejo. [player_tooltip player_id='406660' first='John' last='Gazzaniga'], James Johnson and [player_tooltip player_id='1284700' first='Hayes' last='Cloutier'] all got valuable reps at quarterback. [player_tooltip player_id='283690' first='Trent' last='Mosley'] was the key target and obvious star. The Eagles' secondary led by [player_tooltip player_id='1288067' first='Logan' last='Hirou'], Luke Anderson and [player_tooltip player_id='401277' first='Lennie' last='Brown'] were impressive all day. Mater Dei transfer safety [player_tooltip player_id='283684' first='Siua' last='Holani'] "Josh" got rave reviews from multiple coaches I talked to. Freshmen defensive backs [player_tooltip player_id='1621228' first='Jordan' last='Hicks'] and [player_tooltip player_id='977697' first='Ca'ron' last='Williams'] got strong reviews from coaches. Linebackers [player_tooltip player_id='283606' first='Dash' last='Fifita'] and [player_tooltip player_id='780315' first='Ivrick' last='Carrigan'] looked very good at linebacker and were flying around.

https://twitter.com/Caron21Williams/status/1812641765712883962

- St. Bonaventure was in a tough pool but had some solid performances. [player_tooltip player_id='283633' first='Kaden' last='Glover'] has a smooth release and has serious zip on the ball. [player_tooltip player_id='1183006' first='Jeremiah' last='Barrios'] was making plays on both sides of the ball and [player_tooltip player_id='1686113' first='Walter' last='Moore'] is a big guy who stands out when you watch the Seraphs.

https://twitter.com/latsondheimer/status/1692395371123950049

- Corona del Mar was a surprise team of the day and coach Kevin Hettig loves it that way. Max Nashed and [player_tooltip player_id='1715179' first='Brady' last='Annett'] both got reps at quarterback and [player_tooltip player_id='1000923' first='Dorsett' last='Stecker'] stood out to me when watching the Sea Kings. He's had a great offseason in the weight room after having an injury this time last year. [player_tooltip player_id='347158' first='Zach' last='Giuliano'] is a big guy who can make plays in the middle of the field. Senior defensive back Brady Gadol had a huge day and sophomore Tucker Murray has the potential to be one of the better sophomores in Orange County.

https://twitter.com/TeranRodriguez1/status/1812203595049447786

- Speaking of former Sunset League teams. Los Alamitos had a strong day behind Cal commit [player_tooltip player_id='282704' first='Alonzo' last='Esparza']. His accuracy is top notch and he's a fiery leader who teammates rally around. [player_tooltip player_id='221860' first='Jerod' last='Terry Jr']. made some nice plays from the backfield and has some serious speed.

https://twitter.com/TeranRodriguez1/status/1812204744779485661

- Charter Oak had a big day throwing the ball. Big name receivers [player_tooltip player_id='1338365' first='Legend' last='Lyons'] and [player_tooltip player_id='723863' first='Marquis' last='Bradley'] were getting open all day along with junior Antonio Reasby. [player_tooltip player_id='406674' first='Lavar' last='Arrington'] was one of the more physically impressive players at the event and it was nice seeing him in pass coverage, proving he can be more than just a really good edge rusher. He didn't seem out of place at all at inside backer and was flying around the field in pass coverage.

https://twitter.com/coachmark_48/status/1791939399279894882

- Narbonne played one of the most competitive games of the day against St. John Bosco in a loss. [player_tooltip player_id='401302' first='Xavier' last='Owens'], Sierra Canyon transfer [player_tooltip player_id='1197333' first='Da'Mari' last='Hall'] and Michael "Mike Mike" Ashford all shined at receiver throughout the day.

https://twitter.com/TeranRodriguez1/status/1812190973713428628

- JSerra has some big guys and other teams were talking about how impressive the Lions were. Tyger Canales got rave reviews from coach Victor Santa Cruz along with seniors Sawyer Thomson and Al Ringgold. Sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='1611307' first='Clark' last='Cokley'], [player_tooltip player_id='1197620' first='Darian' last='Webb'] and William Fredericksen performed well along with junior Kale Webb. Santa Cruz complimented JSerra's strength coach for the progress the Lions made this offseason and the team certainly passes the eye test with its size.

https://twitter.com/JSerra_Football/status/1812605962555105341

- Liberty of Bakersfield had a nice day but I didn't get to see them very much. [player_tooltip player_id='1060927' first='Jeremy' last='Kenney'] is a lengthy quarterback who I saw make some quality throws later in the day.

- Millikan had some impressive athletes including Crean Lutheran transfer [player_tooltip player_id='1344394' first='Daylin' last='Caamano']. Santa Margarita transfers [player_tooltip player_id='282763' first='Joshua' last='Tuchek'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1203247' first='Anthony' last=''] League had big moments and freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1717670' first='Odell' last='Simms'] Jr. drew praise from coach Romeo Pellum.

https://twitter.com/RepMax_io/status/1813052908491186518

- Underclassmen quarterbacks were one of the top storylines of the day.
