Week 1 Class 5A Standouts with Rankings Update

West Des Moines Valley (1-0) – Our preseason No. 1 knocked off three-time defending 5A championship Southeast Polk, 20-17, Friday night in Pleasant Hill. Cedar Falls (1-0) – The Tigers proved to be rude hosts to Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday. They sent the Prairie Hawks home with a 35-13 setback. TE Kai Smith, a UNI commitment, caught two passes for 50 yards. Dowling Catholic (1-0) – The Maroons completed the home-and-home sweep of Cedar Rapids Kennedy Friday, claiming a 24-12 victory at Valley Stadium a year after emerging victorious at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. QB Parker DePhillips was efficient in throwing for 123 yards and two TDs. Waukee (1-0) – The Warriors ruined Ames' home opener, leaving town with a 59-14 win. Ankeny Centennial (1-0) – The Jaguars wanted revenge after falling to rival Ankeny in last year's state semifinals. They got it Friday with a convincing 31-10 triumph. Jacob Whipple and [player_tooltip player_id='1361693' first='Will' last='Taylor'] had 25 combined carries for 125 yards and a score. Johnston (1-0) - The Dragons picked up an impressive 28-17 win at Waukee Northwest Friday.
