of Ames is back, looking to improve his production this fall. Completing just 53.7% of his passes to reach 1,819 yards is pretty impressive. He doesn’t have ridiculous arm strength, but the ability to extend plays is certainly a calling card for Cantonwine. The 6’1″, 190-pound QB evades pressure incredibly well, making every passing down difficult on defensive linemen, who just can’t seem to bring him down.
Easily the most explosive athlete of the bunch, Cantonwine makes plays with his legs, too. He rushed for 615 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground last season, and his playmaking ability with his feet is unmatched. If Cantonwine can refine his skills as a passer, he has the chance to skyrocket up recruiting boards this fall.

made significant progress as a passer in his junior season, and he’s solidified his role as the central piece of the Cyclones’ offense. Cantonwine finished with 1819 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 8 picks, while rushing for 615 yards and 8 touchdowns. Cantonwine has already proven his big-play potential on the ground, but I was impressed with how much he improved on his reads and his arm strength, which showed as he was able to stretch the ball down the field more this year toward his dynamic WRs. If Cantonwine continues to improve on his accuracy, he should certainly be one of the most dangerous QBs in Iowa in 2025.

Cantonwine is a tough quarterback. He dealt with defenders in his face and chasing him from the pocket most of the night against City. He still found a way to make a lot of plays with his arms and legs. He threw for 256 yards and ran for 66 more in this one. Cantonwine passes well when on the move and owns a strong arm. He’s a good athlete, leaving open the possibility a college could see him at a different position depending on how he develops behind center.
