We’re still seven months away from the 2024 season kicking off but it’s never too early to look ahead. Well, sometimes it is and this is our WAY too early look at Class 6A-1 in 2024. So much can change between now and when August rolls around. But nevertheless, we’re looking into the crystal ball and putting the spotlight on the top teams, players and storylines to watch in 2024. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma over the next week as we have our “WAY Too Early” Previews for each class dropping each day!

2) JENKS
– There’s a chance Jenks is the most talented team in 6A-1 and they look to upend Bixby this fall.

– After brutal semifinal exits in back to back seasons, Union will once again be in the mix in 6A-1.
4) OWASSO

9) BROKEN ARROW

6A-1 STORYLINES TO FOLLOW IN 2024
CAN ANYONE STOP BIXBY?
Bixby made history in 2023 as the first team in state history to make it to ten consecutive state championship games. With the win over Jenks, Bixby won nine out of those ten championship games. The Spartans have now won six gold balls in a row and they are hungry to make more history in 2024. They’re searching for a seventh consecutive gold ball and tenth in school history. The Spartans lose a lot on the defensive side of the ball but if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Bixby over the last six years, this is a program that simply reloads and will be ready to go.
EAST/WEST GAP – WHERE IS IT NOW?
Whenever you’re talking about the state’s largest class, one of the top storylines is going to center around the East/West gap and just how big has it gotten? It’s a complicated answer. While on one side, we do think that gap is getting smaller. Programs like Edmond Santa Fe, Mustang and Norman North have proven they can compete with the Tulsa-area programs. But on the other side, Bixby is now in 6A-1 and you’ve gone from a “Big Four” in the Tulsa area to a “Big Five” moving forward. One day, a west side team will win the 6A-1 title, regardless if it feels like an impossibility right now.
NEW HEAD COACHES
Edmond Memorial, Owasso and Westmoore will all have new head coaches when the 2024 football season begins in August. As of right now, Edmond Memorial has not made their hire official. Owasso has already named Antonio Graham the next head coach, replacing Hall Of Famer Bill Blankenship. And Westmoore grabbed plenty of headlines this offseason. They fired Lorenzo Williams despite him leading the Jaguars to their best season in recent memory. David White has replaced Williams and the Jaguars will start a new chapter when they take the field this fall.
OPEN TRANSFERS COMING
In December, the OSSAA made the announcement that student athletes in Oklahoma will have a one-time transfer without setting up residency or sitting out a year. It was a monumental announcement and in the first two weeks in July, we’ll see exactly what kind of impact this decision has. Those two weeks in July is the only time that student athletes are able to make the transfer from one school to another. We’ve seen plenty of notable players moving schools over the last few years. Only time will tell what impact this rule has on the future of Oklahoma.
REDISTRICTING BRINGS NEW MATCH-UPS
Broken Arrow and Westmoore will be switching districts with Edmond North and Mustang for the next two seasons. In addition to seeing new district match-ups, we’ll also see a few non-district games. Broken Arrow and Westmoore both played Union in non-district action but that is now a district game. Union will have two new non-district opponents. Broken Arrow will have the same after having to replace Owasso and Union as non-district games. We will see more match-ups between Oklahoma teams and out of state squads as well as 6A-1 VS 6A-2 showdowns.
