Expert Analysis
Matt Morrow | Prep Redzone Scout
Like with some of our other selections, I recently analyzed Tre in our Junior Bowl series. He will be a big piece of the Providence Day defense, returning a ton of starters in their defense of the NCISAA state championship. Tre recently received an offer from Michigan, and is going on some junior day and unofficial visits to several different schools – notably NC State and Vanderbilt most recently. Tre’s versatility to play as a DB closer to the line of scrimmage, or a linebacker with excellent cover and tackling skills, makes him a valuable prospect to a lot of college football programs.

Tre had another highly productive season for the state championship Chargers with 72 tackles, 9 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions. He’s been a highly rated player for us for a while now, and an easy consideration for this 704 Junior Bowl Team. Tre’s size and athleticism, along with the strong on-field production, have led him to become a highly recruited prospect, with his latest offers coming from Louisville, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech. Those offers came in spite of Tre naming a Top 7 school list of, in no order, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Indiana, Southern California, Nebraska, NC State, and Tennessee.

A defensive back/linebacker tweener, Geathers is a positionless prospect in the best of ways. He can line up as a traditional box safety, flex out into the slot, or even line up as an off-ball linebacker. That allows Providence Day’s entire defense to play with flexibility, as they can match personnel against two and three-receiver sets without subbing defensively. The NFL is learning the importance of that role with guys like Nick Emmanwori bursting on the scene, but very few guys have that versatile a skill set. Geathers is the exception.

Our biggest riser in the top 10, Geathers just keeps getting better since we first saw him around a year ago. Like most Providence Day defenders, he’s versatile and excels in space, always willing to lay the boom. He’s improved greatly as a man-to-man pass defender, something that will only help him on the recruiting trail.

Geathers comes from a football family, but he’s one of the first defensive backs in the group. He could grow into a linebacker and plays more as a box safety than a pure coverage guy right now, but he’s versatile and his football I.Q. is obvious. He can do almost anything asked of him, both due to his mentality and understanding of the game, and because of his athletic ability.

Geathers is a hybrid safety-linebacker with coverage skills and that’s an archetype that college coaches love, because it’s rare. Most bigger defensive backs struggle with hips and footwork, but Geathers’ family pedigree is on full display with the way he plays the game. He flew up our rankings this spring after a string of Power Four offers.

Coming from one of the great football families in the Carolinas, Geathers is a high I.Q., versatile defender with plenty of athletic upside. He can play multiple positions and excels wherever he is on the field. It will be interesting to see how his body develops as that will determine his likeliest college position. That being said, I like taking chances on talented football players with elite athleticism and that description fits Geathers.
