We're now more than halfway through January, and with the new year fully underway, I'm excited to see that recruiting news in Minnesota is really starting to pick up. With the accelerated recruiting timeline of today's day and age, D1 schools are nearly fully onto the next cycle, meaning the 2026 class is fully in the spotlight. However, DIIs, DIIIs, NAIAs, and occasionally some FCS programs are still invested in the 2025s, and with only four months left in the school year, recruiting is back into full swing. Before the PrepRedzoneMN Official 2026 Rankings Update goes live on Monday morning, PRzMN wanted to give our readers a quick roundup of the biggest Minnesota-related recruiting news, narratives, transfers, visits, in-school check-ins, offers, and commitments since we counted down to the new year a couple of weeks ago. No one is more comprehensive than PrepRedzoneMN!

South Dakota State commits flip to Wazzu

The biggest recruiting narrative regarding Minnesota prospects coming out of the holiday season was based in Brookings, South Dakota. Right before the New Year kicked off, Washington State announced that former SDSU Head Coach Jimmy Rogers, who guided the Jacks to their second consecutive FCS national title in his first season at the helm of the Missouri Valley powerhouse. The move has sent ripples through the Jacks' 2025 signing class, which included eight Minnesota seniors, and a few of those signings took the chance to play in the newly formed PAC12 with the HC they committed to this month. The status for the remaining MN SDSU commits isn't 100% certain, most notably Chaska DL [player_tooltip player_id='362299' first='Josh' last='Wedel'], who deleted his commitment tweet to SDSU from back in June, so we'll see who ends up where when all the dust settles. For now, it looks like the MN DB commits of the 2025 class will be heading to Pullman.

The coaching change also created some transfer news, and leading the pack of SDSU transfers from Minnesota in terms of name recognition is 2023's Mr. Football Maxwell Woods. The Chanhassen product totaled 29 carries for 176 yards and a TD in his freshman season, exciting Jacks fans and really shining a spotlight on the young buck's potential and upside as a collegiate running back. There was a brief period of time where I thought Woods might be testing the open market, but he'll be taking his talents to Pullman with some fellow Minnesota products. Keep your eyes out for this kid in the coming years.

Bryce Hawthorne to Iowa

This is big news, people. With the upheaval of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits program this offseason, we saw a plethora of former Jackrabbit standouts hit the portal since their 2024 season ended. Some followed Jimmy Rogers to Washington State, but others took to the open market, with a few FCS standouts winning big in the portal. Of the Minnesotans who looked for greener pastures, no one won bigger than Osseo's Bryce Hawthorne. A 6'3, 285 lb. DT who was named to the Missouri Valley All-Newcomer Team after totaling 22 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, and 4.5 sacks in his redshirt freshman season, Hawthorne announced he was heading to the B1G in early January, committing to the Iowa Hawkeyes on the 4th. Minnesota has seen a significant amount of transfers bump down a level or two in the past few cycles, so this is a much-needed win for Minnesotans looking to find success at the next level. Can't wait to see this kid with the Hawkeyes, and it'd be fun to have some more DL success in Iowa City.

Big news here as the athletic Anoka product, who announced his commitment to FCS St. Thomas for both football and track, but was identified and evaluated by NIU WR Coach Joseph Hawkins late, earning an FBS offer a couple of days ago. I love how NIU has still recruited seniors, but I didn't expect to see them in Minnesota again this 2025 cycle. Ibekwe is an All-State track and field performer with an experienced and decorated prep football career with Anoka. I'd be keeping an eye on this recruitment this next couple of weeks.

With good size and a wrestling background himself, the younger Sather now has an Ivy League football opportunity under his belt. Good job by Cornell to find a high-academic prospect with the size and talent of Sather's early. I'll be interested to see if this offer gets other programs closer to pulling the trigger on the EP standout. More Ivy League roster spots will be coming as well.

One of the best basketball players in the talent-rich Land of 10,000 Lakes, Moore saw his status as a legitimate college football prospect strengthened in January after the Iowa Hawkeyes reached out with an offer. Moore, who was offered by the Gophers football staff during the season, came out for football to play with his brother - 2028 QB [player_tooltip player_id='1651164' first='Tre' last='Moore'] - and now has multiple B1G football offers to add to his lengthy basketball sheet of suitors. Iowa is in desperate need of playmakers on the perimeter, so Moore could potentially earn a ton of snaps in Iowa City. As one of the best multi-sporters in the nation, this is a recruitment you are going to want to stay on top of. Whether he wants to play basketball, football, or potentially both sports in college, PrepRedzoneMN is excited to see what happens.
