Matt Tate | Prep Redzone Scout
Matthews is the leading tackler in Colorado and with good reason. The 6’2 210-pound LB had 157 total tackles (55 solo, 102 assisted), 14 TFL, 4 sacks, 3 INT (1 returned for a TD), 3 FR (1 returned for a TD). Matthews has very good athletic ability due to elite acceleration, very good speed, lateral quickness, balance, and jumping. Matthews has very good read and reaction speed, consistently putting himself in positions to make plays. He has very good strength and very good tackling. When he’s lined up as a blitzer, uses his very good take off speed paired with very good get off and block shedding skills to beat the OL. Patient on RPOs, read options, and swing passes. Matthews is a hard-hitting backer, laying the boom. Very good ball tracking and catching. Plucks the ball out of the air and uses his athletic ability to gain yards. Very good range. He has relentless pursuit and will run across the field to make the tackle. Colleges are doing themselves a disservice by not recruiting Tate. Matthews is a P4 linebacker.

Tate has been having himself a year, and it continued against the 20th ranked team nationally. He had 10 total tackles, (2 solo, 8 assisted), 2 INT, and 1 pick 6. He has very good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, speed, lateral quickness, and good jumping. Matthews has very good read and reaction speed and it showed on the pick 6. He read the RPO bubble, used his very good block shedding to win against the WR, picked the ball, and took it to the house. On another play, he got another interception off a tipped ball. Matthews is a smart player, and is patient on read options and swing passes. Very good in pass coverage and demonstrates his anticipation for the ball. Very good blitzer. With his take off speed and good bull rush. Very good strength and very good pursuit. He’s also a sure-fire tackler. Matthews is the full linebacking package, and deserves to be recruited way more than he currently is.

Matthews is a well rounded defender capable of impacting multiple phases of the game. On the edge, he sets the perimeter against the run, shedding blocks and forcing plays back inside. His coverage skills allow him to drop into his zone, breaking on underneath routes or getting depth to contest passes over the middle. Matthews plays with controlled aggression, enabling him to transition from coverage responsibilities to blitzing when his number is called. In Week 1, his ability to stuff the run early could free this pass rush to attack in obvious passing situations. Matthews’ versatility should make him an x-factor from the opening whistle.
