Bixby linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK has been one of our favorite linebackers to watch in person over the last few seasons. And with Bixby dominating Oklahoma high school football, we’ve seen the Spartans quite a bit. The thing that always impresses us about Puckett, and players just like him, is his ability to always play at his best in the biggest games of the season. Puckett never backs down from a challenge. He always elevates his game and plays outstanding football when they face the toughest competition. Bixby’s LB group was one of the best in the state and Puckett was the best of the bunch.

Week 0 Win Over Owasso

rnIn the first game we covered this season, Bixby beat up on Owasso with a 42-16 win. In that win, senior linebacker was one of the best players on the field. He finished the night with 19 tackles and 11 of them were solo tackles. He also had two tackles for loss and a sack. Puckett set the tone on the opening night of the season that Bixby wasn’t going anywhere. And he also made a statement that Bixby’s front seven was going to be one of the nastiest units in the state of Oklahoma this season.

When you write about players, it’s easy to throw out hyperbole but this is not one of those cases. Bixby senior linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK is one of the best in the state at what he does and he does not get enough credit statewide. Puckett leads the Spartans in tackling with well over 100 on the season. He can absolutely take over a game on the defensive side of the ball, which is incredibly hard to do. But Puckett has an engine that simply does not quit. He began this season with a dominant performance against Owasso in week zero and will look to finish this season with another one.

Bixby senior linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK would be on this part of the breakdown regardless of what happened back in week zero. But when we look back at Bixby’s 42-16 win over Owasso in late August, Puckett was arguably the most dominant player on the football field. He was definitely the best player on the defensive side of the ball. He finished with nearly 20 tackles that night and has been a tackling machine all season. Puckett has been one of the best linebackers in 6A-1 for two seasons now.

Bixby linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK is one of the best linebackers in the state. He proved that once again in the season opener against Owasso with a standout performance and has backed it up in every game since. Puckett is still leading the Spartans in tackles by a wide margin and is an absolute menace on the football field. Puckett also has an incredibly high on-field IQ and because of that, he seems to always be in the right place at the right time. A few years ago, his older brother Jack was one of the best linebackers in the state and it was a similar situation. He always knew where to be and always found a way to the ball. Hank plays the same style and should get an opportunity to play at the next level. He leads a Bixby defense that has been lights out all season long.

Bixby senior linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK is one of the best linebackers in the state and he’s playing like it so far this season. He leads the team in tackles with nearly 40 on the season and he had an explosive start to his senior year with nearly 20 tackles in the season-opening win over Owasso. He was dominant in that game and that’s not surprising to anyone who watched him last season or anyone who has seen a Puckett playing linebacker at Bixby. Just like Kirby, Puckett is the younger brother of a former Spartan star. His older brother Jack was one of the best linebackers in the state a few years ago and now Hank has taken that title and looks to continue what has quickly become a family tradition.

We mentioned this following Bixby’s 42-16 victory over Owasso on Thursday night but we’ll repeat it here. Senior linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK was the best player on the field from start to finish. The senior finished with nearly 20 tackles on the night, which makes sense considering it felt like every other play he was either making the tackle or was in on the tackle. 11 of those 19 tackles were solo from the linebacker position. He had two tackles for loss and a sack as the Bixby defense was absolutely dominant for the first three quarters as they rolled to the week zero win. In our opinion, Puckett is one of the best linebackers in the state and he backed it up on a big stage.

Bixby senior linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK was the player of the game in our opinion. It seemed like the Bixby standout linebacker was everywhere for the Spartans, especially in the first half when the Spartans jumped out to an early lead and dominated on defense. Puckett was a tackling machine from his linebacker position and he also did a good job of getting into the backfield and putting pressure on both of Owasso’s quarterbacks. The Rams could never find a rhythm on offense in the first half because of the relentless pressure that Puckett and the Bixby front seven put on them. Puckett is one of the top linebackers in the state and he showed why Thursday.

Last season, we made the comment that the Bixby defense was arguably the hardest hitting unit in the state. And 2024 linebacker Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK was one of the leaders in that department. Puckett enjoyed a breakout season a year ago and he’s looking to firmly establish himself as one of the top linebackers in the state this fall. A few years ago, older brother Jack was one of the top linebackers in the state and Hank is looking to follow in those footsteps this fall. Bixby’s strength on the defensive side of the ball last year was their incredibly experienced secondary. This year, it will be Puckett and the other returning starters along the front seven.

There was one consistent theme about the Bixby defense last season as they captured another state championship. Hitting. We said multiple times that the Spartans were arguably the hardest hitting defensive unit in the state and one of the leaders of that defense was Hank Puckett Hank Puckett 5'11" | LB Bixby | 2024 State OK at the linebacker position. He’s the younger brother of former Bixby standout Jack Puckett and just like his older brother, Hank is one of the hardest hitting linebackers in the state. We think that Puckett and the Bixby front seven is going to be the strength of the Spartan defense after they have to replace everyone in the secondary. Puckett might not have the measurables as some of the other linebackers in the state’s 2024 class but that really doesn’t matter to us. We’ve seen him in person and on film and all of the production, plus the way he plays the game is good enough for us. He’s one of the best linebackers in the state’s 2024 class.
