MARK YOUR CALENDARS
August 31st – Millwood AT Heritage Hall
This match-up between 3A and 2A powers has become one of the marquee non-district games ever since they started playing each other a few years ago. Defending 3A champion Heritage Hall will host last year’s 2A runner up in Millwood in a battle of OKC powerhouse programs. The Falcons lost a very competitive and close game at home against the eventual 3A champs last year to kick off their season. Both teams expect to have long and successful seasons that end with a championship appearance in Edmond. We get our first look at both teams here in week one.
September 8th – Jones AT Washington
When we look at all of the different match-ups that will happen this season in Class 2A, there isn’t a better game than week two’s match-up between defending champion Washington and Jones. The Warriors are on top of the preseason rankings and the Longhorns aren’t far behind at #3 in the preseason poll. These two teams met twice last season with the first coming in week two and then a rematch happened in the semifinals. Both teams expect to contend for the state championship this fall so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this week two clash is the first of two meetings in 2023.
September 8th – Rejoice Christian AT Beggs
On the same night that Jones and Washington square off, it’s not the only 2A clash featuring top ten teams. Rejoice Christian absolutely dominated the regular season meeting a year ago and then fell flat in the first round of the playoffs as Beggs had a rare first round win over a district champion. And when these two teams take the field in week two this year, we expect some fireworks on the offensive side of the ball as both teams have some absolute playmakers and we’ve seen these two in some shootouts. We saw plenty of points last year when these two met and don’t think it’s changing in 2023.
September 29th – Rejoice Christian AT Claremore Sequoyah
The week two clash with Beggs isn’t the only road game that Rejoice has this season that will be a must-watch game. In week five, the Eagles will hit the road to face Claremore Sequoyah in a battle of Eagles and the district title might be on the line here. On paper, Claremore Sequoyah and Rejoice Christian look like the top dogs in this district and despite it being week five, this game could very well decide the district championship. Claremore Sequoyah was a surprise team in Class 2A last season but they won’t be sneaking up on anyone as a preseason top ten team coming into this fall.
November 3rd – Kiefer AT Victory Christian
The final week of the regular season brings a potential district championship showdown between Kiefer and Victory Christian. The Conquerors are #5 in our preseason rankings and the Trojans are right behind them at #6 and both expect to contend not only for the district championship, but they have state championship aspirations. Last year, the district championship came down to the final week of the regular season when these two had a showdown. If the district title is on the line once again, the winner here could set themselves up for success with a more favorable road in the playoffs.
NOTABLE STORYLINES
A Split Is Coming
Class 2A is about to change in a massive way as the 2023 football season will be the last year where Class 2A is arguably the most competitive class in the state. Ever since Class 3A went to a 32-team class, that made Class 2A an absolute gauntlet and in our opinion, it has been the most competitive class year in and year out. But starting in 2024, Class 2A (along with Class A and Class B) will be split into two divisions. The updated ADM numbers were released in July and the football coaches voted on and approved the updated districts and class lineups moving forward. Class 2A’s Division 1 is still going to be incredibly competitive and Division 2 will certainly see some new teams get an opportunity to win at a level they haven’t experienced in a while. It’s going to be interesting to see how that split plays out and what storylines come from it. But again, that doesn’t happen until the 2024 season.
Washington’s Golden Age
Arguably the biggest storyline coming into the 2023 football season in Class 2A is Washington’s recent run. The biggest question is pretty simple. Can anyone stop Washington from making another trip to Edmond and contending for the state championship? The Warriors are coming off a state championship in 2022 and they made it to back to back title games in 2020 and 2021. As we walked off the field at UCO following the 2A championship game back in December, we immediately thought about the 2023 season and how it seemed like a Washington-Millwood rematch could happen when you consider how much talent both teams bring back. But there are quite a few teams that will have something to say about that. Top five teams Jones, Idabel and Victory Christian each bring back the majority of their starters and made deep playoff runs a year ago. But for now, Washington is the team to beat.
Youth Movement
When you look at Class 2A this season, it’s hard not to be impressed with the obvious youth movement going on in the class. In our All 2A Team, we put a spotlight on the best players in the class and there are almost as many sophomores/juniors as there are seniors in the lineup. There are 14 seniors in the All 2A Team and 12 juniors with 1 sophomore making the breakdown. Class 2A’s senior class has some really impressive players but that junior class appears to be incredibly special. In our 2025 rankings, spotlighting the top juniors in the state, the top two overall prospects are from Class 2A with Millwood’s Jaden Nickens Jaden Nickens 6'4" | WR Douglass | 2025 State OK and Washington’s Nate Roberts Nate Roberts 6'4" | 235 lbs | TE Washington | 2025 State OK respectively. While Class 2A is getting ready to change with the split coming in 2024, it’s also good to see that this class is set up for long term success with so many young and talented players that are going to be making plays this year and beyond.
