2A’s #9 Beggs opened their 2023 season in style with a shutout victory over Hugo on Friday night. He finished with nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries. And he also had two catches for nearly 100 yards and a touchdown. Martel has been a star since he was a sophomore and he came into this season as one of the top running backs in the state. If week one was any indication, he’s primed for an outstanding senior season. Despite Beggs having a retooled offensive line, Martel still put up monster numbers. This week, they’ll face Rejoice Christian and the last time they played was the first round a year ago. Martel ran for over 350 yards and four touchdowns in that victory.

The Kansas commit was truly special with the football in his hands and he’s been that way since early on in his career. Martel and the Demons now turn their attention to a growing Class 2A rivalry in week two. They will host #10 Rejoice Christian in a rematch of last year’s first round playoff game. After being blown out by Rejoice in the regular season, Beggs blew out Rejoice in the playoffs.

As a junior, Martel backed up the hype as one of the top running backs in the state, regardless of class. He finished his junior season with just over 200 carries for 1,905 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was also a threat in the passing game as he finished with over 300 yards and a handful of receiving touchdowns. Martel has also been put out on the field on defense to give the Golden Demons another athlete on the field. He has gotten progressively better every season and will come into this season as one of the best running backs in the state and he’s going to be a match-up nightmare for plenty of opponents.

Martel has been on our radar since his freshman season and he’s been considered one of the top running backs in the state, really ever since. Last year was an interesting season for Martel after splitting carries with CJ Brown for his first two varsity seasons, Martel became the guy at running back for Beggs and he was absolutely ready for the added workload. Martel is also the third of the Big 12 commitments as he committed to the Jayhawks a while ago and has remained loyal in that pledge to Kansas as the Jayhawks have continued to do a good job recruiting in Oklahoma. Martel is going to be an interesting player to watch this fall because Beggs has to replace most of their offensive line but we have no doubt that we’re still going to see a few highlight runs from Martel every single week. He’s been one of the top offensive prospects in the class since the start and nothing is changing now.

Martel has been on the radar since his freshman season and he’s only gotten better and better, every time he’s gotten on the field. This fall is going to be interesting to watch as Beggs looks to rebuild the offensive line, that’s going to be blocking for Martel throughout the season. But as Martel showed a few different times, even when the play breaks down and Martel doesn’t have a clear running lane, he can use his deep skillset to get into the open field and then it’s hard to bring him down. Martel made a big jump from his sophomore to junior season, it looks like he’ll make a big jump again.
