Every Friday throughout the regular season on Prep Redzone Oklahoma, we’re going to add three names to the Player Of The Year Watchlist. Be sure to check back every Friday to see who gets added to the Player Of The Year Watchlist and what the current watchlist players have done this season. This year’s winner will be the fourth winner in our website’s short history. The previous three winners were all juniors, including last year, but we have not had a repeat winner yet. The road to Edmond continues this week and so does the race for the 2023 PRZ-Oklahoma Player Of The Year award!
Piedmont senior Cannon Wood Cannon Wood 6’1″ | 215 lbs | ATH Piedmont | 2024 State OK is the first of two 5A standouts to be added to the watchlist this week. Wood has led Piedmont over the last several seasons as one of the best two-way players in the state. He’s back at it again this season and has backed up the hype of earning All State honors as a junior and coming into 2023 as arguably the best two-way player in Class 5A. It’s the impact that Wood has on both sides of the ball that make him a perfect candidate for this watchlist. On offense, he’s Piedmont’s leading rusher in a flexbone option attack. He has nearly 800 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. But he also turns around and plays defense and is part of a talented linebacker group. He has 74 tackles on the season with 11 coming behind the line of scrimmage. He also has a pair of interceptions and one was returned for a touchdown. Wood has also had a few clutch moments this season as well and is a great addition to a list featuring the best players in the state.
Highlights
We’ve been saying that the state’s 2025 quarterback class is pretty special for about two years now. And here’s another example of that with Grady Adamson Grady Adamson 6’1″ | 215 lbs | QB Deer Creek | 2025 State OK from Deer Creek joining the elite list. He’s the fifth junior quarterback to make the watchlist and there’s a few more out there that are names to circle moving forward. But it’s hard not to add Adamson to the list after Deer Creek probably locked up the district championship with a big win over Del City last week. Adamson has been playing great football this year and has been incredibly efficient with the ball on offense. He’s thrown for well over 1,300 yards and 11 touchdowns with only 1 interception. And Adamson, similar to some of the other 2025 quarterbacks on this breakdown, is an underrated athlete. He’s also added nearly 350 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to his season stats. Deer Creek looks like a state title contender once again in Class 6A-2 and Adamson is a big reason behind that.
Highlights
Class 5A is deep this season and specifically at the running back position. Prior to this week’s additions, we already had four running backs in Class 5A on this watchlist and now we’ve added two more with Wood and Malachi Nicholson Malachi Nicholson 5’11” | RB El Reno | 2024 State OK out of El Reno. We knew the senior standout was primed for a big season with the Indians but I don’t think anyone, including Nicholson expected this kind of production. El Reno has only played six games and Nicholson already has over 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns and is very clearly the top producing running back in the state. Nicholson got on everyone’s radar a few weeks ago when he joined a very limited club of running backs with over 500 yards in a single game. But even take that performance away from his stats and he’s still well over 1,000 yards. Nicholson is producing at a high level every single week. The senior standout and the Indians are scratching and clawing for a playoff spot and if they get into the postseason, they’ll be a hard team to beat.
