It's still hard to believe, but somehow, someway, we're onto the state quarterfinals! Just like the 2024 regular season, the section tournament - and for Class 6A, the first two rounds - were as exciting and unpredictable as we could hope for. Upsets in every round, big shakeups of the state title scenes, and some heavyweight battles in a win-or-go-home tournament, highlighted by an excellent slate of section final matchups that went down last weekend. In our ongoing quest to remain as the most comprehensive, one-stop shop for Minnesota high school football AND recruiting, you know that PrepRedzoneMN couldn't let sections go by with some kind of recap, so here we are! Best game, best player, best performances, and your most comprehensive rundown of MN's 2024 sectional tourney, the the first two rounds of 6A, available anywhere. Top 5 Best Games:   1) Alexandria 48, Moorhead 44   2) Blaine 38, Rosemount 36   3) Mounds View 28, Prior Lake 27   4) Apple Valley 35, Two Rivers 31   5) Kingsland 17, Spring Grove 14   Tuesday, October 22nd (Section Quarters):   Fridley 7, Minneapolis Camden 6 - I believe a missed PAT or 2pt was the difference here. Fridley put up 7 in the 3rd, Camden answered with a 4th quarter score, but couldn't get the point after   Chaska 13, Waconia 12 - Overtime win for the Hawks on the road @ Waconia. Two field goals by 2026 specialist Samuel Summer for the Hawks, then Waconia scored in the 4th but missed the PAT. Chaska scored first in OT, Summer hit the PAT. Then Waconia scored, but their PAT was missed and Chaska squeaked out a tight one to start their sections off   Winona 2, Austin 0 - Packers forfeited to Winona in the Section 1 quarterfinal. Pretty crazy seeing a 4A squad forfeit in the playoffs, but here we are!   Chisago Lakes 37, South St. Paul 35 - Tight quarterfinal victory here for Chisago Lakes. Down 20-7 at half, the Wildcats stormed back with 21 points in the third, then held off a furious SSP comeback after the Packers got the score to 37-35 with a little less than three minutes left in the game   Little Falls 28, Detroit Lakes 20 - Definitely an upset here. Little Falls, then 2-6, got revenge on DL, who was 5-3 at the time, who they had list to by one-point in Week 7 of the regular season   Cannon Falls 50, Randolph 6 - Not exactly an upset, but I was not expecting the butt-whooping that the Bombers put on Randolph. The Rockets were 7-1 at the time and had a great roster in 2024, but I think people were underestimating Cannon Falls, who came out and put a hurtin' on Randolph in the Section 4 quarters. The Bombers rushing attack was on fire that night   Friday October 25th (Class 6A First Round):   Blaine 38, Rosemount 36 - Doesn't get much more exciting than a last-second field goal, especially at the prep level. It's been a good showing for the Northern suburbs in the 2024 6A playoffs, and Blaine got things off to an exciting start a couple Fridays ago by beating Rosemount on a 29-yard FG by senior Jared Killian with two seconds left in the ball game.   Champlin Park 24, East Ridge 22 - Was definitely surprised by this one, as East Ridge was hot and playing some good football after putting 41 and a W on Lakeville North and following it up with a won over Mayo. However, we were collectively sleeping on the Rebels, who had a good showing from QB [player_tooltip player_id='641143' first='Preston' last='Thielke'], who threw for 2 TDs and ran for 200 yards and another score. Senior DB Sheikh Dukuly also posted 10 tackles and 2 INTs in the win.   Lakeville South 41, Wayzata 21 - The Cougars got revenge from their Week 1 loss to Wayzata in win-or-go-home fashion, beating the Trojans by 20 to keep their playoff hopes alive.   Rochester Mayo 28, Centennial 24 - Mayo has really asserted themselves as a consistent, tough, and steady contender in the 6A scene. Knocking out the defending state champs is always a big deal.   St. Michael-Albertville 21, Stillwater 14   Saturday October 26th (Section Semifinals):   Apple Valley 35, Two Rivers 31 - One of the best game of sections, Apple Valley upset previously undefeated Two Rivers 35-31 in the Section 3 semifinals, led by a stunning offensive output from senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='493314' first='Jackson' last='Thornburgh'], who we will cover more below. Apple Valley went up 14-0 quickly but Two Rivers came back in furious fashion, and the game was back-and-forth the rest of the game. Thornburgh found senior [player_tooltip player_id='1248619' first='Brandon' last='Fleming'] for a 52-yard score for the go-ahead TD with 2:20 left in the 4th.   Princeton 32, Rocori 8   Kingsland 17, Spring Grove 14 - Another overtime thriller, two 9Man heavyweights fought and clawed in yet another crazy matchup between Kingsland and Spring Grove. The Knights used a game-winning, go-ahead kick in OT to down previously 9-0 Spring Grove. 9Man has been crazy in 2024!   Minneapolis North 35, St. Croix Lutheran 34   Fillmore Central 46, Blooming Prairie 39 - Blooming Prairie came back down 39-20, all in the 4th quarter. [player_tooltip player_id='234900' first='Brady' last='Kittelson'] popped off for 242 passing yards and a TD and 14 rushes for 144 yards and 3 TDs. However, Fillmore Central had one more score in then, as [player_tooltip player_id='1633435' first='Bridon' last='Bahl'], who went 18-23 for 311 yards and 4 TDs to 1 INT on the day, hit Joshua Haugerud for the go-ahead score.   Holdingford 34, Eden Valley-Watkins 14 - Holdingford had previous lost to EVW 24-6 during the regular season, but avenged the loss, taking down what was a Top 3 AA contender basically the entire regular season. Statement win for the Huskers.   Hawley 30, Pelican Rapids 20 - Upset here, although not a massive one, as Hawley - then 7-3 - took down an 8-1 Pelican Rapids squad in the Class AA, Section 8 semifinal   Osakis 16, Pillager 15 - Another upset out of the AA ranks, 3-5 Osakis took down 7-1 Pillager in a tight Section 6 semifinal. I would have loved to be at his one   Two Harbors 21, Pierz 20   Mankato East 35, Mankato West 15 - The streak of Mankato West over Mankato East victories is over, as the Cougars break their 19-loss streak to their rivals from the opposite side of town. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1231847' first='Ganden' last='Gosch'] - one of the state's top senior stock rising signal-callers - went 12-18 for 205 yards and 3 in the victory.   Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 31, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 27 - Previously 7-1 and holding down a ranking in the state most of the regular season, Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta lost their Class 3A, Section 8 semifinal to DGF, who were previously 6-3. [player_tooltip player_id='1113064' first='Kade' last='Swenson'] rushed 17 times for 191 yards and 3 TDs for the Rebels in the victory   Owatonna 14, New Prague 7 - Safe to assume Owatonna may have underestimated New Prague here, but squeaked out a narrow victory to continue their quest for a 5A title   Thursday October 31 (9man Championships):   Border West 22, Hancock 20 - Heckuva 9Man, Section 4 championship here, as Hancock, previously 9-0, loses to now-8-2 Border West. Looks like Hancock scored late in the 4th, then went for 2 to tie, which was stopped behind the goal line. Looks like NDSU commit [player_tooltip player_id='1204066' first='Chase' last='Evink'] didn't play for Hancock, which I'm sure played a role in the defeat   Cromwell-Wright 20, Nevis 14 - Down goes the defending state champs! Cromwell-Wright, down 14-12 at the end of 3, scored the lone pass of the 4th quarter, taking down the 9Man favorite Tigers in exciting fashion   Friday November 1st (Section Finals & 6A Round 2):   Minneota 34, BOLD 28 - BOLD lost the previous matchup 42-14, so good showing here from Warriors to nearly take down Minneota, who looked untouchable until now. The Vikings are still rolling into the state playoffs hot   Staples-Motley 36, Osakis 30   Mountain Iron-Buhl 34, Cherry 28 - Great job by Cherry here. The Tigers lost big to MIB in Week 7, 62-6 in fact, so this is a heckuva turnaround in what must have been an awesome 9Man, Section 7 championship   Robbinsdale Armstrong 28, Robbinsdale Cooper 20 - Another rematch from the regular season, Cooper lost to Armstrong 49-21 in Week 3 but had quite the fight left for their crosstown rivals in the Class 5A, Section 5 championship   Elk River 59, Andover 28   Deer River 8, Mille Lacs 6   Mounds View 28, Prior Lake 27 - One of the best games of the weekend, Mounds View kept their strong 2024 campaign rolling forward with a big win over Prior Lake. Mounds View went up 28-21 late in the 4th but Prior Lake stormed back, led by RB [player_tooltip player_id='930598' first='Levi' last='Eiter'] - who went for 33, 186, and 2 TDs in the loss - scoring a TD very late in the 4th. However their 2pt attempt was unsuccessful, stuffed by Mounds View's defense, and the Mustangs walked away with a one-point victory   Hill-Murray 49, Simley 42 - OT thriller with a chance to go to state on the line here. The Pioneers - led by their stud senior QB [player_tooltip player_id='1582430' first='Jackson' last='Reeves'] - put the go-ahead score in from 6-yards out in OT1, then stopped the Spartans attempt to tie the ball game. Hill-Murray is on a tear this playoffs!   Albany 29, Minnewaska 21   Norwood Young America 21, Cannon Falls 14   Kimball 26, Holdingford 20   Fairmont 17, Waseca 12 - Fairmont avenged their one-point loss to Waseca in Week 8, one of the best games of the regular season, taking down their Section 3 competitor in Round 2 during their championship showdown   Maple Grove 34, Eden Prairie 0   Anoka 35, Lakeville South 34 - Thirty-four point scored in the 4th quarter between these two, with two talented senior QBs going at it in [player_tooltip player_id='362278' first='Gaven' last='Dean'] and [player_tooltip player_id='485214' first='Peyton' last='Podany'].   Lakeville North 17, Champlin Park 13   Alexandria 48, Moorhead 44 - Yet another Game of the Year candidate between these two 5A heavyweights. It's been well documented by the StarTribune and other outlets, but Alex pulled away and into the lead on a 99-yard pitch & catch from [player_tooltip player_id='641133' first='Chase' last='Thompson'] to WR [player_tooltip player_id='945334' first='Mason' last='Gorghuber']. The Cardinals defense then finished the game strong, and Alex avenged their Week 7 loss to the Spuds when it mattered most   Hermantown 35, North Branch 28   LeRoy-Ostrander 38, Kingsland 27 - Two of the best 9man rosters in Minnesota put on a show, with superstar senior [player_tooltip player_id='945346' first='Cam' last='Hungerholt']'s dynamic ability and unstoppable production proved too much for the Knights. There will be two new 9man state champion finalists in 2024!   Top Players and Performances of Sections   Top 10 Individual Performances   1) [player_tooltip player_id='641133' first='Chase' last='Thompson'] (Alexandria) 2025. QB. 6'7, 205 lbs. - Clemson basketball commit Thompson had a large hand in the takedown of consistent 5A #1 Moorhead, going 23-33 for 409 yards and 3 TDs to 1 INT in the Cards' thrilling 48-44 victory   2) [player_tooltip player_id='493314' first='Jackson' last='Thornburgh'] (Apple Valley) 2025. QB. - In the Eagles takedown of #1 seed Two Rivers, Thornburgh went 20-22 for 227 yards and 3 TDs, as well as 12 rushes for 58 yards and 2 TDs in the 35-31 win   3) [player_tooltip player_id='945346' first='Cam' last='Hungerholt'] (LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli) 2025. QB/ATH. - Against Southland in the Section 1 9man semi, Hungerholt rushed 12 times for 324 yards and 4 TDs. Also threw for 4 TDs. In the Section 1 final against Kingsland, Hungerholt went 14-29 for 223 yards and 4 TDs to 1 INT while rushing 32 times for 162 yards and 2 TDs   4) [player_tooltip player_id='1145278' first='Ryan' last='Meagher'] (Minneota) 2025. RB. - Ran 39 times for 213 yards and 4 TDs in Minneota's win over BOLD in the Class A, Section 5 championship   5) [player_tooltip player_id='1132564' first='Sam' last='Shaughnessy'] (Blaine) 2025. QB/ATH. - Minnesota-Duluth commit Shaughnessy had another big night last Friday against Forest Lake, completing 12 passes on 18 attempts for 232 yards and 5 TDs and rushing 21 times for 67 yards and another score   6) [player_tooltip player_id='945334' first='Mason' last='Gorghuber'] (Alexandria) 2025. WR. - Big night for Gorghuber, who caught 5 passes for 176 yards and 2 TDs including the 99-yard go-ahead bomb with 7 minutes and two seconds remaining in the ball game, the eventual game-winning score   7) [player_tooltip player_id='429419' first='Bo' last='Bokman'] (Lakeville South) 2025. ATH. - St. Thomas commit Bokman caught 8 passes for 217 yards and 2 TDs in Lakeville South's one-point loss to Anoka   8) Stephan Jackson (MPLS North) 2025. RB. 5'10, 230 lbs. - The powerful Polars RB had an awesome sendoff to his prep career, rushing 28 times for 298 yards and a TD in North's 34-28 loss to Holy Family   9) [player_tooltip player_id='1221973' first='Marquel' last='Keten'] (Totino-Grace) 2025. RB. - Stud senior RB Keten popped off for 10 rushes, 190 yards, and 6 TDs in TG's 47-6 win over St. Anthony Village in the Class 4A, Section 4 final   10) [player_tooltip player_id='1293093' first='Tristan' last='Kowalkowski'] (Becker) 2027. QB. - Sophomore Kowalkowski went 7-10 for 236 yards and 3 TDs in Becker's 28-7 thumping of Princeton in the Class 4A, Section 8 Championship last Friday   Top 5 Players   1) [player_tooltip player_id='641133' first='Chase' last='Thompson'] (Alexandria) 2025. QB. 6'7, 205 lbs. - One of the top multi-sport athletes in the Great State of Minnesota has saved some of his best gridiron play for last. In the Class 5A, Section semi, Thompson went 16-23 for 181 yards and 2 TDs, as well as three rushes for 20 yards. However, things got better in the section final, which happened to be the game and win of the playoffs so far. Thompson went 23-33 for 409 yards and 3 TDs to 1 INT in the Cards' thrilling 48-44 victory over Moorhead, a unanimous 5A state title pick. Atta boy, Chase.   2) [player_tooltip player_id='945346' first='Cam' last='Hungerholt'] (LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli) 2025. QB/ATH. 6'1, 190 lbs. - MSU-Mankato commit Hungerholt not only went crazy in the stat line, going 12 times for 324 yards and 4 TDs + 4 TDs passing in the section semi. But he saved some big-time performances when it mattered most. In the Section 1 final against Kingsland, the returning 9Man runner-up, Hungerholt went 14-29 for 223 yards and 4 TDs to 1 INT while rushing 32 times for 162 yards and 2 TDs. LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli is now heading to state!   3) [player_tooltip player_id='234777' first='Elijah' last='Johnson'] (Fairmont) 2025. RB. - St. Thomas RB commit Johnson was integral in Fairmont's state playoff birth, which included an upset of Waseca in the section finals, who they lost to in Week 8 of the regular season. In the semis, Johnson rushed 25 times for 200 yards and 2 TDs in Fairmont's 27-14 win over Luverne, and he added 45 carries for 191 yards and 2 TDs, plus a 9-yard reception, in the 17-12 win over Waseca. Class 3A, Section 3 champions thanks to some hard running by the senior tailback and speedster.   4) [player_tooltip player_id='1292281' first='Martin' last='Sleen'] (Hermantown) 2027. RB. - In Hermantown's section semi win against Duluth Denfeld, Sleen busted 18 carries for 230 yards and 3 TDs, and followed it up with a tough, hard-fought 16 rush for 98 yard and 2 TD showing in a great win over North Branch. The Hawks wouldn't be in the state playoffs without him   5) [player_tooltip player_id='1582430' first='Jackson' last='Reeves'] (Hill-Murray) 2025. QB/ATH. 6', 180 lbs. - The lynchpin to Hill-Murray's 2024 success, which now includes a birth in the Class 4A state playoffs, Reeves was integral in both the Section 3 semi and final wins. In the 35-14 win over Chisago Lakes, Reeves went 12-13 for 148 yards and 3 TDs to 0 INTs, along with 8 rushes for 114 yards and 2 TDs. In the final against Simley, which ended 49-42, Reeves passed for two TDs, and rushed for the go-ahead, game-winning score from 6-yards out in overtime. Secure with the ball, clutch, and dynamic. Someone needs to get on this kid!   Honorable Mention Performances:   J'Marion Sanders (MPLS North) 2026. WR. - First game back from knee surgery against St. Croix Lutheran in the section semis, Sanders went for 6 catches for 198 yards and 3 TDs   [player_tooltip player_id='1288313' first='Taye' last='Reich'] (Moorhead) 2027. RB. 5'10, 185 lbs. - P4 offeree Reich popped off for 241 rushing yards and 4 TDs in the Spuds' tight loss to Alexandria in the section finals last weekend   [player_tooltip player_id='502012' first='Isaiah' last='Wright'] (Fertile-Beltrami) 2025. RB. - One of the best uncommitted RBs in the state, Wright rushed 17 times for 241 yards and 4 TDs in the win over Park Christian in the section semis. QB. 6'1, 180 lbs. - Sophomore sensation Feeney went 15-19 for 344 yards and 5 TDs in Moorhead's section semi final win over Brainerd 48-0   Brayden Sturm (Springfield) 2025. WR/DB. 6', 170 lbs. - In Springfield's 27-6 section semifinal win over Sleepy Eye, Sturm caught 6 passes for 101 yards and 2 receiving TDs and added 2 INTs as well   [player_tooltip player_id='1583318' first='Isaiah' last='Beale'] (Rochester Mayo) 2025. RB/LB. 5'11, 180 lbs. - 28 for 239 yards and a TD in MIB's big section final win over Cherry   [player_tooltip player_id='1582826' first='Hudson' last='Vosika'] (BOLD) 2025. RB. - Caught more than 100 yards passing and 2 TDs and returned an interception 99-yards for a score in BOLD's 34-28 loss to Class A #1 Minneota   [player_tooltip player_id='362273' first='Emmanuel' last='Karmo'] (Robbinsdale Cooper) 2025. LB/ATH. 6'3, 225 lbs. - Gophers commit Karmo posted 16 tackles, as well as 3 rushes for 14 yards and a TD, in Cooper's loss to Armstrong in the Class 5A, Section 5 championship   [player_tooltip player_id='1120521' first='Carsyn' last='Kleffman'] (Elk River) 2027. RB. 6', 220 lbs. - The Pioneers thumper of a RB rushed for 3 TDs in Hill-Murray's shootout victory over Simley in the Class 4A Section 3 championship   [player_tooltip player_id='923837' first='Dominic' last='Baez'] (St. Thomas Academy) 2026. RB. - Baez rushed 20 times for 197 yards and 2 TDs in STA's Class 5A, Section 3 championship win over Apple Valley   Cooper Brinkman (Albany) 2025. DE/OL. 6'3, 190 lbs. - Brinkman had an integral part in Albany's 29-21 Class 3A, Section 6 win over Minnewaska Area, posting 18 tackles and a sack in the win   [player_tooltip player_id='1602765' first='Abdimalik' last='Abdi'] (Stewartville) RB. - Rushed 8 times for 105 (13.1 YPC) and 3 TDs in Stewartville's 48-0 win over Pine Island in the Class 3A, Section 1 championship   Zach Docteur (Shakopee) 2025. QB/S. 6'1, 200 lbs. - Lakers standout Greenwood pushed his Prior Lake squad to victory over Farmington, going 8-12 for 101 yards and 3 TDs through the air, as well as a 2pt conversion   Beckham Van Voorst (Robbinsdale Cooper) 2027. QB. 6'1, 185 lbs. - An integral part to Cooper's 2024 success, Van Voorst went 13-15 for 210 yards and 2 TDs as Cooper stomped Washburn 48-7   --

It's still hard to believe, but somehow, someway, we're onto the state quarterfinals! Just like the 2024 regular season, the section tournament - and for Class 6A, the first two rounds - were as exciting and unpredictable as we could hope for. Upsets in every round, big shakeups of the state title scenes, and some heavyweight battles in a win-or-go-home tournament, highlighted by an excellent slate of section final matchups that went down last weekend.
