Elgin AT Lawton MacArthur</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It doesn't get much better than this to kick off the 2024 season. 4A's top-ranked Elgin will go on the road to face 5A's #2 Lawton MacArthur. This was supposed to be a district game, until the emergency redistricting shuffle in April took place. Now, it's arguably the best game in week zero. It's a rare #1 VS #2 match-up from different classes and these teams both have state championship aspirations in 2024. And both teams come into this season with the firepower to carry them to a state championship this season. There are multiple D1 commits that will take the field and a handful of others that have D1 offers. Then you have the next tier of players that are outstanding high school football players and will play college ball somewhere. This is an outstanding way to start the season. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>October 4th - Poteau AT Ada</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In week five, we'll reach the halfway mark of the 2024 regular season and we'll have a good idea of who the true contenders are in Class 4A. Ada comes into this season as a top five team in the preseason rankings, fresh off a semifinal appearance and the majority of their starters are coming back. They certainly fit the description of being a contender. And then there's Poteau. The Pirates have been one of the top programs in 4A football over the last four seasons and they are very hungry to get back to the mountain top in this class. They got hit hard by graduation but they are also one of a handful of programs where you just pencil them in as a playoff team and potentially much more. We're looking forward to seeing how both teams look at the halfway mark of this fall. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>October 17th - Cushing AT Wagoner</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The first of two marquee 4A match-ups on a Fall Break Thursday night is here with Wagoner hosting Cushing. Look, the Bulldogs are heavy favorites in this district but Cushing has definitely been a thorn in their side over the last few seasons and they have players capable of pulling off the upset here. This is also a rematch of the memorable 2022 state championship game that was won by Wagoner on a field goal as time expired. Last season, Wagoner was once again a heavy favorite but they had to hold on and survive a scare from Cushing at home. This season, we could see a repeat of that or we could see the Bulldogs run away with this one and inevitably, run away with the district crown. Either way, this is a game to keep an eye on this season. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>October 17th - Weatherford AT Elgin</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In another clash on Fall Break, we'll see that Elgin squad that is coming into this season with high expectations hosting Weatherford. This was a non-district game during the last two seasons and we were at their meeting in Weatherford last year. Elgin's ground and pound game would dominate from start to finish and leave no doubt. The Owls are going to have one of the better rushing attacks in Class 4A and the Eagles will try to slow them down. This is a very experienced Weatherford squad that will have a first year head coach but a familiar name as they hired from within this offseason. Elgin and Weatherford are the top two teams in this district and it wouldn't surprise us at all if the district title gets decided here. For Elgin, they are hoping for more championships in 2024. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>October 25th - Blanchard AT Tuttle</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It'll be one of the biggest games in Class 4A this season and we have to wait until week eight to see Tuttle hosting defending champion Blanchard. These two have become big time district rivals and this season is no different. Blanchard has the crown in Class 4A and Tuttle looks like a team that is more than capable of taking it away from the Lions. Two years ago, Blanchard stunned Tuttle in the final seconds to win. Last season, it was one of the more bizarre games we've ever covered as Blanchard won 20-6 without scoring a single point on offense. Three defensive touchdowns would allow the Lions to win and go on to capture the district championship. This year, the district will be competitive once again but make no mistake, the district title could definitely be on the line here. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>2024 SEASON OUTLOOK</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Class 4A has been dominated by the perennial powers for the last decade. Whether it's been Clinton, Poteau, Tuttle or Clinton, more times than not, the state champion has come from that group. Not last year. And maybe not this year either. Blanchard stunned Wagoner to capture the 2023 state championship and the 2024 Lions are right back in the hunt for another gold ball with perhaps the most electric player in 4A football. Elgin was a late addition to 4A after the April redistricting shuffle and the Owls immediately became arguably the team to beat in Class 4A with a roster full of experience and talent. Now, they look to win when it matters most. Now don't get us wrong, you look at the preseason rankings and you see Wagoner and Tuttle both in the top five. If either team won the state championship this season, it would not surprise us at all. Wagoner is experienced and hungry after settling for silver last year. Tuttle has absolutely reloaded with some new faces that make them one of the very best in the class. Then you have Ada. A team that is ranked in the top five, loaded with talent and coming off a semifinal appearance. But it's been nearly three decades since their last state championship and this is a community that is ready to bring home title number 20. Outside of the top five, you have some very interesting teams like Poteau and Weatherford, as well as Hilldale, Bethany and Clinton. Any of those teams have potential to make some noise this season and go on a run like Ada did last season to the semifinals or perhaps further. There are plenty of dark horses that are flying under the radar right now but they'll send some shockwaves throughout the class this season. Class 4A has been pretty predictable recently but we think that changes in 2024. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
