The 4th annual PRZ Sooner State Shootout took place in Broken Arrow this weekend and we had over 100 teams from this region competing on Saturday and Sunday. In the 18U division, we saw some fantastic play from the quarterback position. In this post, we're taking a look at seven quarterbacks from this division that stood out in one way or another. We have more quarterbacks featured in team-specific spotlights. You can check out all of our Sooner State Shootout coverage at this link. We'll have more highlights of these players and more up on our YouTube Channel later in the week!

[player_tooltip player_id='1836765' first='Brayden' last='McMullen'] - 2028 - CHJ Elite

CHJ Elite 2028 signal caller [player_tooltip player_id='1836765' first='Brayden' last='McMullen'] might be the next guy at quarterback for Lincoln Christian. McMullen can absolutely sling it and he really impressed us when we caught them in action during pool play on Saturday. He was calm, cool and collected throughout the action on Saturday and he did a really good job of pushing the ball downfield. It was pretty clear after watching him for a few minutes that he was one of the better quarterbacks in the group. We didn't know much about McMullen coming into the tournament but we have a high opinion of him now and can't wait to see him when the pads come on in the spring.

[player_tooltip player_id='1601980' first='Brycen' last='Black'] - 2028 - SayLess

2028 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1601980' first='Brycen' last='Black'] is running it back with SayLess this offseason. Black first got on our radar during the end of his freshman season with this SayLess squad at our 7v7 tournaments. So we were pumped to see him in action again this weekend. And Black still has one of the best deep balls in the tournament. That's what first stood out to us last year and he brought that back with even more efficiency this weekend. Black recently moved from Choctaw to Moore and he's expected to compete for the QB1 job there. Whether it's at a camp or tournament, Black routinely stands out at the quarterback position.

[player_tooltip player_id='1235926' first='Drew' last='Frankenfield'] - 2027 - R-Air

2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1235926' first='Drew' last='Frankenfield'] is one of the top quarterbacks in Oklahoma so we were pumped to see him and his Owasso teammates in action this weekend with R-Air. Frankenfield immediately passed the eye test. And the thing that was fun to watch on Saturday was how much he continued to improve, game over game. We rarely saw him push things and make a bad throw into coverage. He was consistently taking what the defense gave him and he was making quick decisions from the pocket. Frankenfield came into the tourney as one of the top quarterbacks to watch and he certainly lived up to the hype with his play on Saturday.

[player_tooltip player_id='1260997' first='Dylan' last='Taylor'] - 2027 - 918 Elite

2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1260997' first='Dylan' last='Taylor'] was running with 918 Elite again this weekend and he was once again one of the better quarterbacks in the 18U division. Taylor's growth as a quarterback from when he was a freshman to where he's at right now has been outstanding to watch. Granted, we're a little biased because he's showcased his talents at countless PRZ tournaments and camps. But he deserves the praise because he continues to get better and better every time we see him. This weekend in particular, the deep ball was on point and he was putting the ball on an absolute rope. He had a really strong performance on Saturday.

[player_tooltip player_id='1679262' first='Evan' last='Canode'] - 2028 - Arkansas Bomb Squad

The only non-Oklahoman on this breakdown, 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1679262' first='Evan' last='Canode'] from the Arkansas Bomb Squad really stood out during pool play on Saturday. Canode was a confident passer and he was slinging the ball all over the field Saturday. Canode got our attention with his accuracy and his ability to spread the ball around to his different playmakers. We didn't see many balls hit the turf while watching Canode operate on offense. We walked away from his performance in pool play thinking he was one of the better out of state quarterbacks in the 18U division. He's a 2028 quarterback with a lot of good football ahead of him.

[player_tooltip player_id='595692' first='Talon' last='Shaffer'] - 2027 - 918 Smoke

2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='595692' first='Talon' last='Shaffer'] is another Oklahoma prospect that always finds a way to stand out at our 7v7 tournaments. It seems like this is the third straight year that Shaffer has been one of the better quarterbacks in his age division. He got off to a really strong start on Saturday and threw the ball with accuracy and power. There's no doubt after going over our notes and some of the video that Shaffer had some talented pieces around him. But he was orchestrating this offense at a high level, keeping everyone involved from start to finish. We were excited to see his continued development as a passer this weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id='445315' first='Taven' last='Hayes'] - 2027 - Flyte 7v7

2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='2138050' first='Taven' last='Hayes'] was another '27 Oklahoma signal caller we were pumped to see spin the ball in person. Hayes was playing with Flyte 7v7 this weekend and had a lot of his Southmoore teammates with him. That should help Hayes as the Sabercats move back up to 6A-1 this fall. When we watched Hayes in person, some of the things that stood out to us was how quickly he scans the field and goes from one read to another. He had everything working in sync from his footwork all the way to his eyes and overall decision making. He showcased a quick release with plenty of power behind a lot of his throws.
