Player Of The Year Watchlist – Week Six

Be sure to check back every Friday to see who gets added to the Player Of The Year Watchlist and what the current watchlist players have done this season. This year's winner will be the fourth winner in our website's short history. The previous three winners were all juniors, including last year, but we have not had a repeat winner yet. Coming into the season, Blanchard had high expectations with a very experienced offense returning and it all starts with senior [player_tooltip player_id='363852' first='Carson' last='Cooksey'] at the quarterback position. Cooksey has been outstanding so far for the Lions and has been one of the more efficient quarterbacks in Class 4A this season. Cooksey has thrown for well over 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns with only a pair of interceptions. Cooksey has also added four touchdowns on the ground as he's led Blanchard's high-scoring offense to new heights this season. But there is no doubt that this week's test against Tuttle will be their toughest district test. They just beat a top five team in Newcastle last week and now they have another top five opponent. Senior running back [player_tooltip player_id='215207' first='Holden' last='Thompson'] came into this season with some unfinished business after missing last year with a leg injury. He's made up for lost time with consistently good production each week. Coming into this week and prior to the Sand Springs game, Thompson ran for well over 800 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 100+ yards on the ground in each game this year. On Thursday night, Thompson added three more touchdowns and ran for more than 100 yards for the sixth straight game as the #4 Pioneers won a big game against #5 Sand Springs. Thompson and the Pioneers are still in the district title race. They played a tough non-district schedule and it didn't slow them down. They faced three straight ranked opponents and the closest game was a 25-point win over 3A's #5 Sulphur. Just like last year, the Warriors are once again a complete team so we could pick a few different players from the Warriors to add to this watchlist. But we're going with senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='215208' first='Major' last='Cantrell'] because he's been flawless so far this season. He's thrown for nearly 1,000 yards and 15 touchdowns with no interceptions. Cantrell hasn't had to play much in the second half and he's probably not going to play much after halftime for the next month but when he's on the field, things have gone well.
