Rivalries Feature Unexpected Results
Anytime someone says “you can throw the records out with these two” it’s usually a cliche. But when we’re talking Jenks-Union, it’s accurate. Despite an 0-2 start, Jenks came out and punched rival Union in the mouth and held on to win another exciting Backyard Bowl, winning 31-24. The Trojans relied on turnovers and a fast start to jump out to a 28-0 lead late into the second quarter. Union would score before halftime and they used that to continue their momentum into the second half. They would rally but it would fall short as the Trojans would prevail. For Union, they will think about what could have been as turnovers and penalties doomed them from start to finish.
Down in Lawton, the Highlanders from Lawton MacArthur captured the city championship after blowing out rival Lawton 41-7. After two quarters, these rivals were deadlocked at 7-7 but it was all Highlanders after the halftime break. They ran away from the Wolverines and outscored them 34-0 in the third and fourth quarters. Between defensive and special teams touchdowns, the Highlanders would roll to the victory. We’ve mentioned how the Highlanders might be one of the more underrated teams in the state considering the talented defense they have. They backed up that statement again while beating their rivals.
Over in Edmond, district play came early as Edmond North picked up an early district victory by beating up on city rival Edmond Memorial 56-35. One week after Edmond Memorial rallied to beat Deer Creek and their star quarterback David McComb David McComb 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Edmond Memorial | 2025 State OK set records with the passing game, the Bulldogs struggled to stop Edmond North’s ground attack, and more records were broken. Edmond North senior running back Dev Mathews Dev Mathews 6'0" | RB Edmond North | 2024 State OK would set the school record with 377 yards and six touchdowns in the win. Mathews is certainly a player that we’ll be keeping an eye on moving forward after grabbing headlines this week.
We also had several 5A/4A showdowns featuring top ten teams and in this rivalry clash, Ada would knock off McAlester 44-20. The Cougars would score three touchdowns in the final three and a half minutes in the first half to take a 30-20 lead into the halftime break. They McAlester wouldn’t score in the second half as the Cougars would roll to the win. Ada took a 24-20 lead just before halftime but then added another score with no time left on the clock with a pick six. The three consecutive touchdowns sunk McAlester and the Buffaloes couldn’t overcome that in the second half.

Ethan Nakolo would make a short field goal with two seconds left to finish off Yukon’s 37-34 upset victory over reigning 6A-2 state champion Stillwater. The Millers were led by senior quarterback Holden Kee Holden Kee 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Yukon | 2024 State OK as he had a fantastic performance throughout the night. Following a week one loss to Westmoore, Yukon bounced back with an impressive win over the Pioneers and Stillwater is still looking for their first win this season. Yukon head coach Brent Barnes got his first win since taking over the Yukon program in the spring and it’s clear that the Millers are already a much improved team.
Berryhill would get a huge win in Class 3A over Cascia Hall 28-21. In the process, they spoiled a potential milestone for Cascia Hall’s head coach Joe Medina, who sits just one win shy of 300 for his career. Cascia Hall had some momentum after beating Rejoice Christian in week one but the Chiefs would dominate the ground game as they would run for nearly 300 yards in the win. Turnovers would also hurt Cascia Hall as Berryhill would put the game away with a pick six to make it 28-14. Cascia Hall would score again but that would be it for a comeback attempt.
And finally, down in Class B, we had a rematch of last year’s state championship game with Laverne and Seiling. The Wildcats beat Laverne last year in the regular season but then the Tigers would knock off Seiling in the title game to capture their second consecutive state championship. On Friday night, Seiling got a little revenge as they would knock off Laverne 46-28. But the Wildcats aren’t going to be satisfied with a win in week two. They have state championship aspirations and they don’t want a repeat of 2022.
Close Calls
With 1:33 left, Norman senior running back Devin Alexander Devin Alexander 6'0" | RB Norman | 2024 State OK scored to give Norman a 42-35 lead over Moore and that would be just one part of an outstanding night from Alexander. But Moore would respond in a big way. With 38 seconds remaining, junior quarterback Malikai Miller Malikai Miller 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Moore | 2025 State OK would find fellow junior CJ Simon CJ Simon 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Moore | 2025 State OK for a 36-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone. And instead of kicking the PAT and playing for overtime, the Lions decided they wanted to win it in regulation. Senior running back Cam Hayes Cam Hayes 5'11" | RB Moore | 2024 OK would punch in what would be the game-winner. The Lions improved to 3-0 and they have an offense that has been clicking since the start of the season.
Deer Creek took their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter but Mustang would score last as the Broncos would go on the road and beat the Antlers 26-23 but they had to earn it. With just under two minutes to play, quarterback Trajan Williamson Trajan Williamson 6'3" | QB Mustang | 2025 State OK would power in a short touchdown to give the Broncos a 26-23 lead and the Mustang defense would hold on from there to secure the win. Williamson’s touchdown run capped off an excellent night on the ground as he ran for nearly 150 yards and Mustang improved to 2-0 on the season.
We mentioned those 5A/4A showdowns and another 4A top ten team knocked off a 5A top ten team when Weatherford beat El Reno 28-26. The Eagles would prevail in dramatic fashion as Stone Chism Stone Chism 6'3" | 220 lbs | ATH Weatherford | 2025 State OK would score his fourth touchdown of the night with just under 30 seconds to play and it would end up being the game-winning touchdown. Weatherford’s gauntlet non-district schedule wraps up with another ranked team from Class 5A in week three when they host Elgin.
Heritage Hall had this one circled for a while as Clinton was the only team that beat them as they would capture the 3A state championship in 2022. But they had to work for it on Friday night in a 50-43 victory but senior quarterback Andy Bass Andy Bass 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK was not going to be contained once again. After putting up monster numbers in their season opener against Millwood, he did it again on Friday against Clinton. Bass threw for more than 350 yards and ran for over 100 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns on the night. Bass and the Chargers jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first quarter but Clinton would score 21 unanswered points to tie the game at 28 going into halftime. It was back and forth throughout the second half but the Chargers would prevail.
Best Of The Rest
– Norman North 31, Edmond Santa Fe 28
Sophomore Mason James Mason James 5'11" | 155 lbs | WR Norman North | 2026 State OK really shined on the offensive side of the ball. The Timberwolves would win on a 27-yard field goal with just under three minutes to play. The Timberwolves would get a big win on the road and they are certainly making their case for the “best from the west” title in Class 6A-1.
– Piedmont 21, Blanchard 7
Piedmont improved to 3-0 on the season with another impressive win on Friday night. They held a Blanchard offense that is one of the better units in Class 4A to just seven points on the night. Piedmont would lead 14-7 after three quarters but they would add another touchdown for cushion to seal the win.
– Poteau 24, Metro Christian 7
Poteau standout and Tulsa commit Dax Collins Dax Collins 6'2" | 180 lbs | ATH Poteau | 2024 State OK got loose for at least one big touchdown run in his future school’s town as Poteau came up to Tulsa and beat Metro Christian 24-7. The Pirates were impressive from the start as they look to truly contend in Class 4A this season behind a stellar rushing attack and stingy defense.
– Rejoice Christian 35, Beggs 16
Rejoice Christian got a massive win on the road when they took down Beggs 35-16. Earlier in the week, it was learned that their star quarterback Cale Marley Cale Marley 5'9" | 170 lbs | ATH Rejoice Christian | 2025 State OK was going to be done for the season after suffering an injury against Cascia Hall. Despite losing their star, they beat a Beggs team that beat them in the first round a year ago.
– Sapulpa 44, Bartlesville 36
For the third consecutive week, Sapulpa found themselves in a shootout but for the second straight week, they were on the winning side of the high-scoring affair. After rallying to beat Tahlequah in the final minute last week, the Chieftains went on the road and got another win over a 6A-2 top ten team.
– Washington 34, Jones 8
In a rematch of last year’s 2A semifinal, it was more of the same as top-ranked Washington beat up on Jones with a 34-8 decision. Jones would miss their senior quarterback Clayton Creasey Clayton Creasey 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Jones | 2024 State OK and the Longhorns couldn’t contain Washington running back Hudson Howard Hudson Howard 5'9" | 180 lbs | RB Washington | 2025 State OK , who’s turning into a breakout star this season.
