Coweta brought back the majority of their starters and a massive chip on their shoulder and they played like it throughout the 2025 season. It started with a rivalry win over Wagoner and then two wins over Arkansas opponents. The Tigers rode that momentum into a tough district, where they got back to back wins over McAlester and Bishop Kelley by a combined nine points. They dropped a week nine game to Booker T Washington for their first and only loss during the regular season. They wrapped things up the following week with their biggest win of the season against East Central. They finished the regular season as district champions and took a 9-1 record into the playoffs after going 2-8 in 2024. Unfortunately for the Tigers, they were one on the other side of history when the playoffs began. Every now and then, you see a district champion go down in the first round of the playoffs and Coweta was upset by Claremore 28-26. The season came to an end at 9-2 but it puts the Tigers in a very interesting position as they turn the page and look ahead to the 2026 football season.   2026 OUTLOOK   Coweta comes into the 2026 season with confidence after going 9-2 last season and capturing a district championship. But they still have that big chip on their shoulder after being upset in the first round of the playoffs. They'll use that as motivation coming into this season. Eight starters return on the offensive side of the ball from a team that averaged over 30 points per game last season. And not only do the Tigers bring back eight starters, but the majority of those guys have been starting since they were sophomores or even one four-year starter. Coweta has the potential to have one of the better offenses in Class 5A football. Defensively, about half of their starters return so the Tigers will be leaning on that high-powered offense early on while they work in some new starters on that side of the ball. But they have some up-and-coming players that could be breakout players for the Coweta defense. Now, the biggest challenge for Coweta this season will be the schedule. The Tigers play four of the top eight teams in our preseason 5A rankings. There are a handful of districts in the various classes where a team can win the district title or finish fifth and be on the outside looking in on the playoffs. This is one of those districts. But Coweta has the talent to compete with anybody in Class 5A and will be determined to finish strong week in and week out this fall.    PLAYERS TO WATCH    2027 running back [player_tooltip player_id='474870' first='Brock' last='Heilmann'] returns for his fourth season as Coweta's starting running back. He'll have a legitimate shot to surpass 5,000 career rushing yards this season. Last year, he was one of the best running backs in the state, regardless of class. And after we got a chance to watch him in person again back in May, we think he's primed for a monster senior season. Running behind a very experienced offensive line, Heilmann has the potential to put up big numbers. And as a fourth year starter, there won't be many running backs in the state that have more touches than Heilmann.   (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     As we get closer to the start of the 2026 season, it's easy to focus on the talent that Coweta has on the offensive side of the ball. But overlooking this defense would be a big mistake. 2027 defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1828748' first='Hudson' last='Arnold'] returns as one of the more disruptive defensive linemen from last year in Class 5A. Arnold ended up leading the team in sacks last season and he was the energizer bunny coming off the edge. When we got a chance to watch Coweta in person last fall, he was the type of player that gave max effort on every play until the whistle. Because of that, he was always around the ball.     2027 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='734696' first='Hunter' last='Reavis'] is in the same ballpark as Heilmann coming into this season. We saw both very early on in their high school careers and Reavis has continued to get better and better every year. Now, he comes into his senior season feeling like an extension of the coaching staff with the amount of snaps and reps he's gotten in the last several seasons. Reavis has been the ultimate swiss army knife for the Tigers on the line of scrimmage. They've moved him all over and he's always answered the call. It looks like he is settling in as the team's center heading into this season.   (2025 All State Honorable Mention)     When a coach specifically tells us to remember a player because it's only a matter of time before he explodes, we listen. Coweta's next top prospect is 2028 running back and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1828738' first='James' last='Hale'] and there's a chance that breakout moment happens this season. Talking with Coweta's coaches this summer, they mentioned Hale as a freak athlete. He has a 40 inch vertical leap and can broad jump 11 feet. Hale could be an emerging star for the Tigers on defense this season. And with his athleticism and talent, he'll earn his way onto the field on offense as well in 2026.     2027 wide receiver and cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='2138055' first='LaMarko' last='Bell'] returns for his senior season. It will be interesting to see how the Tigers utilize him this season. On one hand, he's one of the better cover cornerbacks in Class 5A football. He's earned that spot after the last two seasons. But he's also a terrific athlete and it wouldn't be surprising to see him emerge as a name to know on the offensive side of the ball. Bell has been a terrific athlete and he brings the juice every time he steps on the field. Look for Bell to be a major impact player for Coweta when they take the field this season.     Joining Reavis on the Coweta offensive line is 2027 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1168754' first='Lane' last='Runnels'] and like Reavis, don't be surprised if Runnels sees time on both sides of the ball. Runnels also brings a lot of experience back for the Tigers on the line of scrimmage. The Tigers had a terrific rushing attack last season and it's because of guys like Runnels on the offensive line. It would be surprising if the Tigers don't have one of the best rushing attacks in 5A football this season. Runnels has also caught the attention of several of the top D2 college football programs in this part of the country.     Leading this potentially lethal offense this season is 2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1836567' first='Legend' last='Ellis'] as he returns as QB1 of the Tigers. Ellis is a dominant wrestler who is committed to Oklahoma. Before he heads to the next wrestler, he's looking for one more run on the gridiron. Ellis was a dual-threat quarterback last season, beating defenses with his arm and his legs. The thing we liked the most about his game last season was his ability to take care of the football. Looking at this roster, there are quite a few weapons for Ellis to get the ball to this fall. All signs point to a big year from Ellis. The Tigers knocked off the Bulldogs 21-7 in last year's meeting and they've now won three of the last five in the series. This is their best stretch in this series in the last two decades. Before starting this run in 2021, they had lost nine straight to Wagoner. Sept. 4th - AT Pryor - Coweta goes back on the road for the second straight week when they face a Pryor team that's a top five team heading into this season. Pryor is back on the schedule after these two didn't play the last two seasons. They met in non-district play in 2022 and 2023 and Coweta swept that series. This would be a statement win for Coweta early in 2026. Sept. 11th - McLain - Coweta wraps up non-district play with their home opener against McLain in week two. The Titans are back on Coweta's schedule for the first time in 25 years. The Tigers and Titans haven't squared off in football since the 2000 and 2001 seasons. In those two meetings, Coweta won both by an average of 20+ points per game.  Sept. 25th - Del City - After a week off, Coweta opens up the district schedule with a home game against Del City in week four. The Eagles are back on Coweta's schedule after these two were in different districts the last two seasons. When they were district opponents in 2022 and 2023, they split the two meetings. It's only week four but both teams expect to contend for the district title.  Oct. 2nd - AT McAlester - Coweta goes back on the road to face McAlester in week five. These two teams have become major district rivals over the last decade. They started playing every year in district play in 2016 and it's been completely even. Since 2016, each team has won five games. Coweta beat McAlester 22-15 last season and that ended up deciding the district title.  Oct. 9th - Bishop Kelley - Coweta returns home to host Bishop Kelley in week six. After two tough match-ups to open district play, it doesn't get easier here when they host the Comets. These two seem to always play games that go down to the wire. Bishop Kelley will still tell you the field goal they kicked in the final minute last year was good. But Coweta walked away with a 22-20 win. Oct. 16th - AT East Central - Coweta heads to east Tulsa to square off with East Central in week seven. The Tigers will look to continue their successful stretch that they have going against the Cardinals since these two became district opponents in 2020. They've won six of the last seven. These two programs are very familiar with one another after being district foes off and on for decades. Oct. 23rd - W. Rogers - Coweta hosts Tulsa Rogers in week eight and it will be the first time these two teams square off since they were district opponents in 2020 and 2021. This is also a series that has been dominated historically by the Tigers. Coweta is 6-0 all-time against the Ropers. The closest game in this series came back in 2005 when they won 28-12.  Oct. 30th - AT Sapulpa - Coweta goes back on the road to face Sapulpa in week nine. Like several of these other high profile district games, this one could end up deciding the district title. It will definitely have a major impact on playoff seeding with the postseason right around the corner. Sapulpa is back on Coweta's schedule after spending the last two seasons in Class 6A-2.  Nov. 6th - AT Glenpool - The regular season wraps up in week ten with another road game against Glenpool. The Warriors are back on the schedule after moving back to Class 5A. These two have been district opponents off and on for the last decade. Coweta is undefeated against Glenpool in the last ten years. Overall, they've won six straight in the series.    NOTABLE   Coweta comes into this season with a big chip on their shoulder and looking to finish strong. Their bounceback season in 2025 wasn't talked about enough last fall. After going 2-8 the year before, the record flipped and they captured a district championship. Now, they enter the 2026 football season looking to start a new playoff streak. In 2024, they had their school-record playoff streak snapped. They made the playoffs every year from 2014-2023 and in the majority of those appearances, they won at least one game. So now, they look to start a new playoff streak and get back to winning games in November. To have success in November, a lot will depend on how October plays out. The Tigers could make a run at the district title or they could miss the playoffs for the second time in three years.
