The Eagles began the season with a 28-27 overtime victory over eventual Class 3A quarterfinalist Kingfisher on the way to a 3-0 non-district record to soar into district play. The Eagles opened District 4A-1 play on the road facing perennial power Clinton and fell 22-21 in overtime to the Tornadoes in a game, that in hindsight, determined the two-seed out of district one. Weatherford got back on-track with back-to-back blowout victories over Douglass and Cache before welcoming the Elgin Owls to town. The eventual runner up in Class 4A, Elgin held the Eagle offense scoreless for the only time all season and the first time since October 2023 in a 17-0 loss to Clinton. Weatherford got back to its winning ways with consecutive 28-21 victories over playoff bound Elk City and a road win versus Woodward before a 47-25 victory over Bridge Creek to claim the three seed out of District 4A-1 and a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs. The Eagles knocked off Blanchard in the opening round setting up a quarterfinal road game at Broken Bow. Weatherford fell to Broken Bow 50-28 to finish 9-3 and scoring 28 points or more in nine contests and finishing with a record of 8-1 in those games. The quarterfinal appearance was the first since the 2019 squad which finished Class 4A Runner-Up. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"fontSize":"medium"} --> <p class="has-medium-font-size"><strong>2026 OUTLOOK</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Eagles will rely upon the defense with seven starters returning and coach Sossamon likes what they have on that side of the ball. The head man specifically pointed out the play of [player_tooltip player_id='1839649' first='Kalen' last='Clift'] at linebacker following an outstanding sophomore season. The defensive line is led by [player_tooltip player_id='1828847' first='Henry' last='Davis'] who is a disruptor at defensive end and will force offensive coordinators to decide the best plan of attack with those two among the front seven. Offensively the Eagles must settle on a quarterback, after the departure of Noah Wald, along with running back, and three offensive lineman lost. There is depth returning in the wide receiver room but the coaching staff must find a quarterback that can find the skilled receivers or other ways to get the ball in their hands to make plays. With a very good young core the Eagles will be tested early with four non-district contests as Class 4A-1 consists of just seven teams for this round of redistricting. Weatherford kicks off the 2026 campaign with a road trip to Lawton to face MacArthur coming off a Class 5A semifinal appearance. The lone Class 4A opponent of non-district action comes Sept. 4 with a road trip to Tecumseh. The Eagles will host El Reno, who they bested 17-0 last season, before welcoming the Duncan Demons. The action does not get easier in the 10 consecutive week slate, as the Eagles bye week comes in the final week of the regular season, as Weatherford hosts Clinton on Oct. 2 and hits the road to Elk City a week late. Then its another 2025 playoff team in district newcomer Bethany at home Oct. 15. Coach Sossamon stated, "He was everywhere on defense last year as a sophomore." Clift's stats back that up with 117 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, eight hurries, and one fumble forced and recovered. He went on to start eight games on the blindside for the Eagles. Bell brings great size to the position with nice lateral movement to kick out of his stance to block the edge. As he continues to develop, grow, and understand the finer parts of offensive line work, Bell will only get better at engaging defenders and finishing off his blocks. Offensively he racked up 575 yards (425 through the air) to go with four rushing touchdowns and two on the ground. He is a precise route runner that finds his way to open areas within the passing game. Defensively he plays the centerfielder type role well reading the eyes of the quarterback and making plays on the ball with good recognition. He is able to meet the ball at its highest point to come away with pass breakups and interceptions. Offensively, Bryant uses his big body at 6-2, 175 pounds to force defensive backs to get physical in the open field to bring him down. Projecting as an EDGE at the next level, Davis has a good first step to beat offensive lineman up the field and to the quarterback resulting in three sacks and six tackles for loss. He finished his junior campaign with 30 tackles as he is capable of grappling with offensive lineman, reading the play and shedding a block to make a stop at the line of scrimmage within the run game. The Eagles has lost the last two showdowns with the Highlanders. MacArthur made the Class 5A semifinals last year where the Highlanders fell to eventual runner-up Bishop McGuinness.<br><strong>Sept. 4th - AT Tecumseh</strong><br>- The lone Class 4A opponent in the non-district slate and yet another road contest to open the season, Weatherford last faced the Savages in the first round of the 2001 playoffs where the Eagles came away with a 17-7 victory. Weatherford is 3-0 all-time versus Tecumseh.<br><strong>Sept. 11th - El Reno</strong><br>- The Eagles bested El Reno 17-0 last season extending the series streak to six wins, although the 2021 contests resulted in a El Reno forfeit due to COVID exposure withn the team. All-time the Indians are 9-8 over the Eagles.<br><strong>Sept. 18th - Duncan</strong><br>- These two have not been schedule to meet since 2013, a contest that was cancelled due to severe weather. The Eagles are 3-2 all-time over the Demons but are riding a two-game losing streak in the series that dates back to 2004.<br><strong>Sept. 25th - AT Douglass</strong><br>- District play begins on the road facing a Douglass program that has seen the Eagles win the last four including back-to-back 40+ point differences. Weatherford holds a 6-2 record all-time versus the Trojans.<br><strong>Oct. 2nd - Clinton</strong><br>- This will mark the 102nd meeting of the Custer County Conflict! Over the last six seasons the teams have split the series 3-3 and going back and forth between wins and losses. If the trend continues this season expect a Weatherford victory although all-time the Red Tornadoes hold a 69-26-5 advantage in a series that has been played every season since 1960.<br><strong>Oct. 9th - AT Elk City</strong><br>- Elk City is coming off a playoff appearance in 2025 but finished fourth in the district following a second consecutive loss to the Eagles by the score of 28-21. These two have met 72 times since 1927 and have played every year since 1970. Weatherford holds a 43-29 lead in the series record. <br><strong>Oct. 15th - Bethany</strong><br>- Bethany defeated Weatherford 28-6 in the first round of the Class 4A 2024 playoffs in the last showdown between the two programs. The Bronchos enter on a two game win streak over the Eagles and are 6-3 all-time versus Weatherford. <br><strong>Oct. 23rd - AT Cache</strong><br>- The final road contest of the regular season sees the Eagles travel to face Cache a program Weatherford has recent success against riding a seven game win streak in the series. The Eagles are 12-2 all-time in a series that began in 2012. The lone overtime contest in the series was a 43-35 loss for Weatherford in 2018.<br><strong>Oct. 30th - Woodward</strong><br>- The regular season comes to a close with a familiar foe in the Boomers. These two have met every season since 2004 and Weatherford has won the last 12 contests.
