Air Force commit Johnston is a high motor safety who consistently finds himself around the football. His speed allows him to match up with talented receivers, while his instincts and anticipation help him create turnover opportunities. Johnston does an excellent job reading offensive concepts, keeping plays in front of him and reacting quickly to the ball once it leaves the quarterback’s hand. His disciplined approach and dependable tackling make him a complete defensive back who rarely finds himself out of position. Air Force is bringing in a player whose intelligence and consistency should translate well to the next level.
Johnston measures in at 5’11 185-pounds. Last season, the defensive back had 43 total tackles (21 solo, 22 assisted) with 5 interceptions in seven games played. He has good athleticism due to very good acceleration, jumping, good speed, and change of direction. Good back pedal and torso fluidity to match receivers breaking into their route. Very good job jamming and re-routing them as well. Uses his very good closing quickness to stay stride for stride and make the interception. Good man and zone. Very good ball tracking and catching. Johnston is a hard hitter as well. Prides himself in tackling and helping in run support. Great player for Grandview.
Johnston measures in at 5’11 185-pounds. He had 43 total tackles (21 solo, 22 assisted), with 5 INT in 7 games. He has good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, jumping, good change of direction, and speed. Smooth back pedal. Good job at jamming the WR and re-routing them. Johnston consistently watches the QB’s eyes, putting himself in position to make a play on the ball. Good man and zone coverage. Stays poised if he misses a play and comes back to attack the next. Very good ball tracking and catching. Johnston isn’t afraid of laying the boom and is a strong tackler as well. Keep an eye on him going into the off-season.
A track athlete who’s clocked a 10.70 in the 100 meters, Johnston uses his elite speed to lock down opposing receivers. He’s a reliable open field tackler and brings physicality to run support, often flying out of his breaks to make plays on the ball. Last season, he totaled 32 tackles and recorded one interception. With seniors graduating, Johnston is expected to take on a larger role and could emerge as one of the top cornerbacks in his region.
A high impact safety, Johnston demonstrates elite vision, quickly reading his keys and the quarterback’s eyes to break on the ball. When he forces a turnover, his speed makes him a legitimate scoring threat. He plays with relentless energy, reacting instinctively to make plays near the line of scrimmage. In the run game, he attacks downhill with physicality, delivering big hits in the gap to stall opposing backs. In coverage, he stays tight to receivers, disrupting passing lanes and breaking up passes. He is an all around player that will be someone to keep an eye on this spring, potentially earning recognition on the Mile High Prep team.
