Expert Analysis

Howard is another prospect whose upside makes him an intriguing player to follow. Now at Grandview, he is in a position to take a significant step forward as he continues to develop his game. Howard showed flashes of athletic ability during the event, but like many rising prospects will benefit from additional refinement and repetition. His focus this offseason will be critical, as continued work on technique, consistency and overall football IQ can help unlock his full potential. With the right development and exposure to high level competition, Howard has the opportunity to emerge as a more complete and impactful player in the near future.

Howard is an exciting DB coming out of Smoky Hill. My fellow scout Nate Kue did an evaluation on him a couple weeks ago, that you can view here. Measuring in at 5’10 155-pounds, the CB had 28 total tackles (15 solo, 13 assisted), and 2 INT on the season. He also got work as a kicker with 23 kickoffs for 947 yards , and 7/7 on PATs. He has good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, jumping, good speed, and change of direction. He stays physical jamming the receiver and re-routing during the route. Very smooth and controlled back pedal. Very good man coverage staying stride for stride, and using his good timing to create pass breakups. Very good closing quickness. Good zone coverage. Howard is a stout tackler as well, not being afraid of contact. He has good leg power as well to launch the ball downfield as well.

has scholarship worthy feet at the CB position. Quick in his backpedal and quick to get out of it, Howard made some valuable technical improvements from his SO to JR season by tightening his base and giving himself better balance. When out of phase, he works hard to fight back into position and make plays on the ball. Howard has a lot of potential and with another good jump in technique this offseason and more experience I think Howard should be able to play even tighter to WRs in off coverage and get more INTs by beating WRs to the catch point especially in the underneath.

Howard is a very versatile player for Smoky Hill. The 5’10 155-pound junior plays corner and kicker. He has 26 total tackles (14 solo, 12 assisted), 1 INT, 1 rushing touchdown, 3 kickoffs for 947 yards, 7/7 PAT. He has good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, jumping, good speed, and change of direction. He does good at jamming the receiver at the line of scrimmage. Very good back pedal, smooth and controlled. Fluid hips to match the WR in man coverage. He has good closing quickness. Good zone coverage skills. Howard is physical during the route, making it difficult for the receiver to catch. One thing about Howard is his very good tackling. As a kicker, he has good kick power and has been reliable as a PAT kicker. Keep an eye on this versatile prospect.

Howard impressed me with his very good body control. During the drills, Howard was making catch after catch. He contorted his body and used his very good adjustment skills to catch the ball, and very good balance to stay up. Howard has very good acceleration, jumping, good speed, and change of direction. During the 7 v 7 drills, he showed good jam at the line of scrimmage, disrupting the release of the WR. Stayed stride for stride in man coverage, and showed good reactionary skills throughout. Howard is another exciting young corner who is boosting his stock!

Howard displayed fast, active feet and natural quickness throughout the day. Although still developing his technique, his raw athleticism allowed him to close gaps quickly and stay in phase with receivers. In one on ones, he used his speed to mirror defenders, and during 7 on 7s, he proved he can read routes and excel in zone coverage. With further coaching, he has a very high upside.
