Expert Analysis
Michael Huntley | Prep Redzone Scout
Finkel averaged 210 yards per game with 19 touchdowns and just seven interceptions for a Sierra Canyon team that went undefeated in the regular season which earned him 1st Team All-Mission League honors.
He throws well off-platform and can put zip on the ball whether his feet are planted or he’s on the run. Finkel can spin it and won MVP honors at the National Preps Showcase last offseason. Tennessee State, Portland State and Lehigh have offered him.

The senior quarterback completed 15-of-24 passes for 154 yards but it was his ability to keep plays alive with his feet that was most impressive. Finkel is a nimble runner who is able to see the field well enough to make plays on the move when needed. That was highlighted on a big run that went for 26 yards. Finkel is a slippery runner with a knack for keeping his eyes downfield looking for creases in the defense. He also performed well as a passer finding the right moments to take deeper shots down the field. Finkel was accurate and displayed an overall nice feel for the game.

Finkel took home quarterback MVP Honors, and has a very nice showing in the afternoon session of camp. Making the transfer to Sierra Canyon, he is a strong armed signal caller that can get the ball out quick with good spin and power behind his throws. He showed he can navigate the pocket cleanly with proper footwork and body control while also showing off his arm on the run and ability to square his shoulders and get the ball in the right spot across his body without losing zip. Heading into his Senior season, he should have a breakout campaign for Sierra Canyon, for what is a loaded roster they have put together heading into the 2025 season. Currently. Finkel holds one offer from UNLV, but should draw plenty of others in the coming months.

There were a lot of good quarterbacks that could have been considered for MVP honors but Finkel really impressed the coaches.
He moved well through all the bag drills with his footwork and was fluid with all his movements. Finkel’s release is smooth and his arm strength has improved since I saw him in a game in November. He looked better Saturday than he did at the Elite 11 Regional and he was hitting receivers in stride frequently in the one-on-one period. The ball jumps out of his hand and he has nice touch on the deeper throws.

Finkel has looked improved as a passer since transferring to Santa Barbara from Bishop Alemany where he was the starter last season. He’s looked more dialed in with his footwork, mechanics, and management of the pocket as a junior. He possesses the natural arm talent to throw into every area of the field and displays great touch and placement on the deep ball. Finkel- who just recently took a visit to Fresno St.- should continue to see his recruiting stock rise with the level of play he’s put on tape this season.

Laird checks into our rankings as a top 25 signal caller in his class within California, and is one of the better ’26 passers that we have seen. He was recently offered by UNLV earlier this Winter, and is a no brainer next level kid that should continue drawing college interest. On tape, he shows he is an accurate passer downfield with a short release, and can fit the ball into tight windows while putting nice zip on it. In the pocket, he moves through his progressions and does a nice job at moving defenders with his eyes before delivering, and flashes pocket mobility and movement while doing a good job at feeling pressure and working the pocket.
