Don’t be fooled by Griffin-Haynes lower sack numbers, he’s an intelligent, high-upside edge defender who should have a more-tangible impact as a pass-rusher in 2025. He excels at doing what’s needed to help his defensive line, whether that’s absorbing double-teams, taking away screen passes and checkdowns, or getting a hand on passes. He has elite length and great pass-rushing upside.
Griffin-Haynes is one of the longest edge rushers you’ll find, with a frame that could likely hold 30-40 pounds. He’s likely going to reshape his body in college, but for now, he’s a scary edge rusher. He’s actually more developed as a run defender, something that gives him a unique profile. Even good high school teams have no idea how to counter his length, so I’m interested to see how that changes at the college level.
Griffin-Haynes is yet another elite edge rusher out of the Tar Heel State in a loaded class. He’s one of the best run defenders in the state and though he didn’t have the pass rushing stats of some of the other top guys, the athletic profile is there to suggest those are coming. He does a great job of setting the edge on outside runs and holding up the point of attack on inside runs. Make no mistake, he’s an early Power Four starter.
Zavion is one of the most disruptive defensive players across the country, and he is recognized as such. The 4star Junior primarily lines up on the edge but the Rams will move him around the entire line. He is strong enough to take on blocks but fast enough to run down even the speediest QBs and Backs like he did last week against Gibbons.
Griffin-Haynes has always been an extremely toolsy prospect who is still growing into the position and that is tracking so far in 2024. The recent North Carolina commit has excelled at setting the edge and has been excellent as a run defender for Rolesville. He’s getting after the passer, but hasn’t yet converted any of those pressures to sacks. That will come. He’s long and explosive and has all the traits to be an elite pass-rusher.
As you might expect from his height, Griffin-Haynes has excellent length off the edge. Maybe somewhat surprising, however, is his advanced footwork. He’s patient against both the pass and the run, rarely getting too far up the field and setting the edge well. To this point, his pass rushing production hasn’t reached its full potential, so there’s more to be had there. As it stands, he’s a standout run defender with high-level pass rush upside.
