Every Friday during February through April, we’re going to throw on the tape and break down athletes across Oklahoma. Earlier this week, we put out a tweet asking prospects in the 2024-2026 classes to send us their film for our Film Review feature. Over 150 responses later and we have our first ten prospects that we’re breaking down. Keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma every Friday for more breakdowns on athletes across Oklahoma. Starting next week, we’ll have more than one post considering how many responses we got. If you’re not featured this week but have sent us your film, don’t worry! You’re on the list and will be covered in the future. Now, all of these breakdowns are based on the film we have access to. And this isn’t just a puff piece. While the majority of the breakdowns will be positive, it will also include areas to improve, question marks and more for the prospect to work on as we head into the spring and summer.
We kick off this week’s breakdown with a state champion quarterback. Heritage Hall 2024 QB Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK was one of the breakout stars of the 2022 season as he helped lead the Chargers to a state championship in a memorable shootout victory over Metro Christian. When you throw on the tape from his junior season, there is a lot to like about Bass as a quarterback and as an overall athlete. First off, he has a rifle attached to his shoulder and can make a few throws that you just don’t see very often on Friday nights. He’s also a very good athlete so he’s no stranger to getting outside of the pocket and moving around but his accuracy downfield stays the same even if he’s on the run. And the one thing we were curious about with his film was how often does he use that athleticism. On most plays, if the first read isn’t there, he could take off and make something happen. But he’s patient and will go over the different progressions and doesn’t just take off. But when he does, he is a very strong runner and the strength that he runs with is very underrated. But that takes us to our biggest question with Bass. Is he a quarterback at the next level or will colleges see that athleticism and project him at a different position?
Highlights
We have a few wide receivers to feature today and Cushing 2024 wideout Brady Matheson Brady Matheson 6’0″ | 180 lbs | WR Cushing | 2024 State OK is our first on this week’s breakdown. The first thing that stands out about Matheson is the production. It would have been disappointing if Matheson wasn’t productive considering how much of a machine Cushing was on the offensive side of the ball. He put up some really strong numbers alongside 2023 superstar Camden Crooks Camden Crooks 6’0″ | 190 lbs | WR Cushing | 2023 State OK , who signed this week with Tulsa. That leads us to our biggest question with Matheson moving forward. What’s next? Cushing loses their star quarterback and Crooks, along with several other pass catchers. Matheson will be one of the lone returning players in terms of skill positions on offense and we’re curious how his production will look in 2023. But in terms of him as a prospect, there is a lot to like and he should be their leading receiver in the fall. He runs good routes, was a consistent playmaker and does a really good job with his feet when he’s going up for a catch near the sideline. He seems to always know where he is on the field and finds a way to get open.
A lot of what we wrote about Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK as an athlete earlier can be repeated right here. When we tossed on the tape for Jones 2024 quarterback Clayton Creasey Clayton Creasey 6’1″ | 195 lbs | QB Jones | 2024 State OK , it’s hard not to see a very strong athlete playing the quarterback position. And going into the film review, we also knew that Creasey was one of the better athletes at the quarterback position considering he played running back as a sophomore while the Longhorns had Carson May at quarterback. Creasey’s first year at QB1 for the Longhorns was a good one as he helped Jones make a deep run in the playoffs despite a slow start against a brutal non-district schedule. The accuracy on Creasey’s deep balls down the field was very impressive as he was putting them on a dot most of the time. But it has to be the arm strength when you’re talking about Creasey’s best traits as a quarterback. The Jones junior was firing missiles into some windows that were very tight and he made the plays that had to be made, even against some of their toughest competition, like eventual state champion Washington. But like Bass, we’re curious if Creasey is a quarterback at the next level or will he eventually be moved to a different position. One area of improvement based on his junior film would be making more reads. There were a lot of plays where his first read is where the ball would go.
Durant’s young standout Cole Robbins Cole Robbins 5’11” | 190 lbs | ATH Durant | 2026 State OK is our first of two 2026 prospects on this breakdown. So we’ll start there when we look at what Robbins is and what he could be down the line. It is so incredibly early in his development that it’s very hard to predict where he’ll be by the time he’s signing with his future college. We definitely want to see more of Robbins moving forward because what we’ve seen from him so far is very impressive. You throw on the tape from his freshman season and the first three plays show just how versatile he can be. First play is returning a kick for a touchdown. Second play is him coming up from a safety position on defense and laying a big hit on a ball carrier. And the third play is Robbins taking a hand off and scoring from the wide receiver position. Robbins played multiple positions on both sides of the ball and that versatility definitely stood out to us when we checked him out. Another really impressive part of his tape was the opponents that he was having success against. It featured some of Durant’s toughest competition and he was still making plays in a variety of ways. That definitely is something that will stick with us moving forward.

Edison 2024 standout Corey Rowland Corey Rowland 6’1″ | 175 lbs | WR Thomas Edison Preparatory | 2024 State OK is a prefect example of why we do this feature during the offseason. It gives us a chance to see new names that might be underrated as prospects and need more attention moving forward. Rowland checks both of those boxes. We went into the film breakdown thinking that Rowland would be listed as an athlete in our system because he plays and produces at wide receiver as well as safety. After watching the tape, Rowland is not only a wide receiver moving forward in our opinion, but he’s definitely a 2024 prospect that should be ranked moving forward. Rowland’s film might have been our favorite film that we watched this week. He’s definitely on the short list if he isn’t at the very top. Rowland has good size at 6’1 and 180 pounds and has a lot of strength in his game. He is incredibly strong after the catch and there were many times when he took a screen pass or a quick slant and turned it into a touchdown in the blink of an eye after shaking off an arm tackle. Rowland also impressed with his very quick cuts and sudden movements with his feet. He had one play on the goal line where he faked a quick slant and cut back towards the pylon and by the time the defender realized what happened, it was a touchdown for Edison and Rowland had more than five yards of separation.

With over 150 responses to our request for film, how we chose this week’s ten prospects was completely random. However, the timing is very interesting for Sand Springs 2026 quarterback Easton Webb Easton Webb 6’4″ | 205 lbs | QB Charles Page | 2026 State OK to be featured this week. Earlier today, Webb tweeted out that he was committing to Oklahoma State for baseball. Webb is only a freshman and like we mentioned with Robbins earlier, there is so much time between now and when Webb would sign on the dotted line. We knew that Webb was a really strong baseball prospect as well but we think that he will continue to climb up the charts when people talk about the quarterbacks in the state’s 2026 class. Webb would impress his Sand Springs coaches throughout the summer and fall camp and would split time at quarterback during the non-district slate. But by the time district play rolled around in week four, Webb had won the job and took over QB1 reps moving forward. Webb was thrown into the fire and there were plenty of times when he struggled, including that first start against Muskogee. But there were also times when you saw what the Sandite coaches saw and that was a quarterback with an incredibly high ceiling moving forward. He passes the eye test immediately when you see him in person and the arm talent is very strong for his age. It’s no coincidence that he’s also a standout baseball player. Watching the football-baseball dynamic play out over the next three years will be interesting.

Booker T Washington 2024 wide receiver Deuce Chalk Deuce Chalk 6’2″ | 175 lbs | WR Owasso | 2024 State OK was a prospect we saw quite a bit in person during the 2022 offseason while he played with Sooner 7. Chalk was also one of the top performers for Sooner 7 at a tournament down in Plano a few weeks ago. Chalk has been outstanding when we’ve watched him playing 7v7 but we wanted to see how he looked when the pads came on. Chalk has a long frame and very strong hands. One thing that really stood out to us when watching his junior film was how well he improvised when plays broke down. He had a very good connection with 2023 quarterback Lathan Boone Lathan Boone 6’1″ | 175 lbs | QB Booker T Washington | 2023 State OK and Chalk would improvise and simply find a way to get open and Boone would find him more times than not. Chalk was very productive last fall, in addition to what we saw from him during the offseason. Chalk also spent some time on the defensive side of the ball at the safety position. But when we look at him as a prospect moving forward, we think that his ceiling would be higher on the offensive side of the ball as a playmaking wide receiver. At 6’2 and 165 pounds, Chalk is on the thinner side so spending a good amount of time in the weight room this offseason will be a big key for Chalk. If the Booker T Washington standout can add some muscle and become a more physical receiver with his frame and skillset, he’ll have a massive senior season.
We go from one Tulsa-area wide receiver to another one here. Sapulpa 2024 wide receiver Kylen Edwards Kylen Edwards 6’2″ | 190 lbs | WR Sapulpa | 2024 State OK is definitely a name to keep an eye on this spring and summer. We don’t have all of Sapulpa’s stats in front of us but we would assume that Edwards was Sapulpa’s leading receivers during the 2022 season. He was also a big reason why quarterback Colton Howard Colton Howard 6’1″ | 195 lbs | QB Sapulpa | 2024 State OK took the next step in his development. Having a dynamic weapon like Edwards down field certainly made things easier. And that’s one thing that really stood out about Edwards. Time after time, Edwards found his way behind the secondary. Even in situations where a cornerback was lining up five to ten yards off the line of scrimmage, Edwards still found a way to get deep and get behind the defensive backs. Edwards wasn’t just a deep ball player. He had good versatility within the routes that he ran. He was just as dangerous on the short and intermediate routes as he was on the deep ball. Then when Sapulpa got near the goal line or when it was time to just throw the ball up, Edwards was usually the main target. There isn’t much to critique on Edwards’ game that we saw. But we do want to see more film of him against some of Sapulpa’s top competition. When the opponents get tougher, we want to see that same production from Edwards moving forward.
If memory serves us correctly, Warner 2024 prospect Ty Vinson Ty Vinson 6’0″ | 215 lbs | ATH Warner | 2024 OK was in the very first “Friday Film Review” feature we did in 2022 as well. And that definitely helped us this time around because we could go back to what we wrote about Vinson around 11 months ago and then toss on the junior film and see how he progressed. Everything we wrote back then still applies as Vinson is an absolute football player. We watched him line up at full back, tight end, defensive end and linebacker during various parts of his junior tape. And like we wrote last year, it is very clear that Vinson just loves the game and will do whatever he has to do to help his team win. That’s why you see just as many plays of him blocking opponents on offense to go along with him carrying or catching the ball. Then on defense, Vinson does a really good job of being physical and getting into the backfield. Like we thought last season, Vinson feels like he is more of a linebacker at the next level. It doesn’t look like he’s grown much since the end of his sophomore year. Right around 6’0 and weighing a little over 200 pounds, we think that Vinson will end up being a linebacker at the next level. We’re looking forward to seeing his continued growth this fall.

Our final prospect on this week’s breakdown is the only one that was strictly on the defensive side of the ball. We’ve been told that Edmond Memorial 2024 defensive back Vincent Mitchell is a very physical player and that came across immediately on the film. We don’t know Mitchell. We didn’t know much about him before throwing on the film. But we don’t think it’s a bold statement to say that he loves to hit. He’s a very physical player and he’s really good in the open field against ball carriers. Mitchell also takes good angles and does a good job of tracking players across the field. He does a really good job in run support situations and comes up and lays the hammer down from his safety position. When we watch his tape, he really reminds us of a linebacker or one of those hybrid players between linebacker and defensive back. But at 5’11 and 170 pounds, he’s definitely on the smaller side in terms of that position and he will probably stick to being a defensive back at the next level. So we want to see more of Mitchell in those passing situations from the safety position. The 2023 season will be big for Mitchell becoming a true college prospect but we think that it is definitely a possibility. What level is a different question.
