5A’s #6 Sapulpa is looking to contend for the district crown and this week they face the reigning district champs from Coweta on the road. The Chieftains will get Coweta’s best shot this week and they can’t afford to look ahead to next week’s showdown at home against #2 Del City. Prior to this season, we thought that the Chieftains had a chance to have one of the better offensive units in Class 5A and they’ve played up to that level so far this season. Senior wide receiver

has been absolutely electric so far this season. He leads the team in receiving with nearly 450 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. As the Chieftains go deeper into district play and start playing some of the toughest teams on their schedule, we anticipate Edwards taking his game to the next level. He’s an outstanding playmaker with the ball in his hands and the Chieftains will need him in some of those bigger games. And if Sapulpa is going to be one of the best teams in Class 5A, they get a chance to prove it this week against Coweta.

While Howard enjoyed a breakout season last year, we think that 2024 wide receiver

is ready to be that breakout star for the Chieftains this fall. With Howard needing to find a new number one option in the passing game after Tre Morrow graduated, we think that Edwards is the easy pick. Last season, he put up some good numbers with over 500 yards and nearly ten touchdowns on the season. But we think he takes that production to another level and becomes one of the top wide receivers in Class 5A and in the state this fall. Not only do we think that he will be up there in terms of production, but we think that he’s primed to blow up as a prospect within the state’s 2024 class as well. He’s flying under the radar right now but that won’t last long.

is a prospect on our short list for becoming an absolute star for his team this season. Last year, Edwards put up some legitimate numbers at the receiver position but we think he takes it to another level this fall. The Sapulpa product is going to be the top receiver in a Chieftain offense that is going to be balanced but has a quarterback that’s also featured in the 2024 rankings. So that 1-2 punch is going to be one of the better QB-WR duos in Class 5A this season. Edwards is a long and athletic wide receiver that can make some plays that just make you shake your head. He stood out at one of the team camps we watched earlier this year and he wasn’t just standing out to us. He stood out to a few different college staffs. It feels like only a matter of time before his recruitment explodes.

was one of the prospects we were fired up to watch in person on Friday. And one of the first plays we saw as we were walking on to the field was Edwards streaking to the end zone after burning his man and catching a touchdown. Edwards is an outstanding athlete and he showed that athleticism throughout the evening on both sides of the ball. We’re looking forward to seeing more of him this summer and into the fall and we really like what the Chieftains bring back on offense. That QB-WR duo of Howard and Edwards is going to be one of the best duos in Class 5A this fall and while the district is going to be a gauntlet once again, we think that the Chieftains could end up making plenty of noise. Just like Hammond, Edwards lived up to the hype.

is definitely a name to keep an eye on this spring and summer. We don’t have all of Sapulpa’s stats in front of us but we would assume that Edwards was Sapulpa’s leading receivers during the 2022 season. He was also a big reason why quarterback

took the next step in his development. Having a dynamic weapon like Edwards down field certainly made things easier. And that’s one thing that really stood out about Edwards. Time after time, Edwards found his way behind the secondary. Even in situations where a cornerback was lining up five to ten yards off the line of scrimmage, Edwards still found a way to get deep and get behind the defensive backs. Edwards wasn’t just a deep ball player. He had good versatility within the routes that he ran. He was just as dangerous on the short and intermediate routes as he was on the deep ball. Then when Sapulpa got near the goal line or when it was time to just throw the ball up, Edwards was usually the main target. There isn’t much to critique on Edwards’ game that we saw. But we do want to see more film of him against some of Sapulpa’s top competition. When the opponents get tougher, we want to see that same production from Edwards moving forward.
