Corey Bailey | Prep Redzone Scout
Joseph Buchanan is a true backfield disruptor with the ability to impact games from the interior. He consistently generates pressure on the quarterback while also anchoring against the run, making him a difference-maker on early downs and in passing situations. Buchanan’s blend of power, leverage, and interior quickness allows him to collapse the pocket and force offenses to adjust protections his direction.
Ranked as the No. 1 defensive tackle in the state, Buchanan has narrowed his focus to six programs: Ohio State, Indiana University, University of Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, and University of North Carolina. As he prepares to make his commitment decision, Buchanan projects as a prospect capable of becoming a difference-maker at the next level.

Joseph makes his name as a top 5 player in the rankings and the #1 overall DL as he can wreck havoc against offenses from any spot along the D-line. Able to play inside as a 3 tech or a multi-front DE, he will make offenses pay from anywhere on the field.
A player I have gotten to see live multiple times over the years, one thing about Joseph that stands out the most is relentless motor and energy he brings every down. Joseph plays with intensity and physicality and sets the tone for the defense. Buchanan has excellent pop and first step off the snap for his size. To go along with top level power and strength. He over powers blockers and is constantly in the backfield making impact tackles. With offers & interest from some of the top colleges in the nation, Joseph will be a force for years to come.

is a powerful, versatile defensive lineman who can line up on the edge or kick inside when needed. He finished the 2025 season with 43 total tackles (13 solo), four sacks, and 11 quarterback hurries.
Buchanan wins a lot of his reps on his highlights with strength and effort. Off the edge, he comes off the ball with force, gets into blockers quickly, and uses power to collapse the pocket. There’s a play where he drove the quarterback 10-plus yards backwards for a sack. Inside, he shows the same strength, walking linemen back, and finishing plays as a pass rusher or run stopper. Buchannan is comfortable attacking gaps, even fighting through double teams to make tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Against the run, Buchanan is stout and decisive. He disengages quickly and doesn’t stay locked on blocks. I’m impressed with the way he finishes with strong wrap-up tackles at or behind the line. His ability to shed and reset stands out, especially for a player of his size.
Overall, Buchanan is a physical, high-motor defender who brings value at multiple spots along the front. Continuing to add pass-rush counters and bend off the edge will make him even more of an elite player. His strength, versatility, and relentlessness make him a consistent disruptor in the trenches.

Buchanan was an absolute menace on the defensive side of the ball for McDonogh, showcasing exactly why he’s one of the most highly touted prospects among top college programs nationwide. He consistently made game-changing plays, generating quarterback pressure that led to errant throws and key interceptions. Armed with a deep arsenal of pass-rush moves, Buchanan disrupted the backfield with ease and authority.
With just two seasons of high school football under his belt, Buchanan is already turning heads, and the best may be yet to come. Heading into his junior year, he’s poised for an explosive season that could cement his status as one of the premier defensive talents in the country.

I’ve watched Buchanan several times in person, but his sophomore-year highlight film caught my attention. His explosiveness off the ball and agility make him a nightmare for opposing linemen. At the high school level, Buchanan plays both on the edge and inside, but depending on how his body develops, I see him transitioning to an interior lineman in college.
Against the run, he sets a hard edge and consistently sheds blockers to make tackles near or behind the line of scrimmage. His tackling fundamentals are sound, as he reliably wraps up ball carriers and limits yards after contact. In pass-rushing situations, Buchanan uses a combination of speed, violent hand techniques, and leverage to disrupt quarterbacks. His ability to play at a low pad level allows him to get underneath offensive linemen, creating separation and outmatching his opponents. Buchanan’s lateral mobility and relentless effort are noticeable on his highlights.
Buchanan is a high-ceiling prospect with the potential to be a dominant force in the trenches.

I first saw Joseph when he was in 8th grade playing with the Hamilton Tigers and he caught me eye as an impressive 6’2″ 185lbs LB even back then. He has continued to grow and bulk up adding on real nice muscle becoming a 6’4″ 230lbs+ DE. Mr. Buchanan is now at McDonogh for the 2024 season after playing most of last year for New Town HS.
Buchanan is a power DE who plays with a lot of strength and great leverage at the LOS. He can beat OL with bullrush, a strong slap and rip, or powering through beating the tackles on the inside shoulder. Joseph isn’t just power as he is explosive off the edge as well. With great bend and burst, he can beat you speed. Bending the edge and flattening down the line he makes a beeline for the QB. A good overall athlete, Joseph runs track as well so you see where that speed & burst comes from. He’s a high motor player who competes and plays through the whistle.
Joseph currently holding four Power 4 offers and I expect that number to increase significantly after this season. He has a ton of potential still so look for him to really take off this year at McDonogh as he continues to develop his skillset.
