Michael Huntley | Prep Redzone Scout
Smith led Santa Margarita in rushing last season with 896 yards and nine touchdowns.
He is a twitchy athlete who can change direction on a dime. Smith is a patient runner who has good short-area burst after he gets through the first level. He can also make plays in the passing game and can make defenders miss in the open field.

Smith was the leading rusher for Santa Margarita with 671 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman.
He is a patient runner who reads his blocks well and is explosive enough to pick up tough yardage once he finds the hole. Smith isn’t a speed demon, but is fast enough to pick up chunks of yardage outside the tackles and can be tough to bring down.

got the spark going in the backfield with a 35+ yard run in the first half right up the middle. Displayed patience while setting up blocks, then accelerating to daylight. Ran hard with limited carries in their spread heavy offense. Added another tough 11 yard scamper in the second half that could have easily resulted in more yardage. Maryland’s over the head snap resulted in the Buckeyes getting the ball inside the rezone, but couldn’t capitalize with Smith getting his 2 yard touchdown called back. Followed up with a failed field goal attempt.

Jaoin “Deuce” Smith was a top performer on both sides of the ball. He had the only interception which he had to work for. Smith made it look easy reading the quarterbacks eyes, then jumping a short route that looked like he should have been the number two receiver instead. Multiple time he trusted his instincts by filling gaps and trusting his pre-snap read. One play he was held by two receivers on a screen play that he disrupted. Be clear, he is not afraid to come down hill and turn heads.
