Scouting the Hough and Providence Day Defenses

Week 3 is here, which means Hough and Providence Day finally meet on the field. The matchup has arguably the most FBS talent we've seen at once in a North Carolina regular-season matchup in the last decade. Here, we're focused on each team's best side of the ball, evaluating the top defensive prospects in this massive game.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Top Defenders in Hough-Providence Day</h2>   <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Defensive Line</h3>    Galloway has somehow flown a bit under the radar as far as top prospects go. It's probably because he's not the flashiest pass rusher. That said, he's arguably the top run defender off the edge in the entire state. He has massive power potential and transitions from speed to power with little wasted energy. He'll flash a dominant rep or two a game where he completely takes over a play.     Womack is an explosive athlete off the edge whose first step often puts him in prime position to disrupt the pocket. He has strong bend, and he's relentless in pursuit, able to chase quarterbacks down from the back side of the play. He's not the biggest edge rusher, but he can win with speed or power and put offensive tackles on the back foot.     While Hunt is an edge in our system, he's added some weight and plays a lot of defensive tackle for Hough. He's a twitchy pass-rusher who has violent hands and a good motor. He's not the first guy you think of on Hough's roster, but he's flashed some excellent pass-rushing potential for the Huskies.     Ibe has really stepped up his game as a junior, with three sacks through two games. While he has average size for a top defensive tackle, he has massive power and can ragdoll offensive linemen. He has the quickness and burst to create havoc in the passing game, and when he gets in the backfield, he rarely misses his opportunity.     Guys like Goodwin are why Providence Day has been so difficult to beat over the last handful of years. He doesn't possess FBS size, but he's almost impossible to block consistently over the course of the game. He rarely gets beaten twice in a row, and he can win inside, outside, or even with power and pass-rushing moves. While a lot of the national attention is on the other side of the line, Goodwin is doing a lot of work.     Ahmadivarji is undersized on the interior, but he's far more productive than you'd expect from the interior defensive line position. He excels at "getting skinny" and shrugging off attempted blocks. He's not meeting guys head-on in the trenches, but he's hard to square up, and he rarely stands in one spot. He's so quick that offensive linemen can't move him, and he can still make plenty of stops in the running game.     Brown has broken out this year after a strong start. He's debuted some nifty pass-rushing moves that you wouldn't expect from an interior run stuffer. He has the quickness to beat offensive linemen to the spot and then the ability to finish plays, resulting in multiple sacks so far this young season.    <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Linebacker</h3>    Abanquah is one of our favorite film studies, and <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/07/scouting-elons-2027-in-state-commits/">Elon</a> is getting a steal at linebacker. He can play multiple spots and excels in the running game. His reaction time is elite, and he rarely takes false steps. He'll shrug off offensive linemen like they're nothing, and then finish the play by making a tackle. He's a really fun player to watch.     Puckett is a violent, downhill backer who plays fast. He's decisive, preferring to err by being wrong than being hesitant. That's a great attribute to have for a high school linebacker and it puts him in position to make some huge plays in the backfield. He's at his best as a run defender who can blow up blockers on power concepts, but he's also flashed as a blitzer off the edge.     Griffin has found himself right at home since transferring from West Charlotte. In my opinion, his tape through two games is better than anything we saw over the past few (very successful) seasons. He's fast, violent, and willing to take on anybody, be that a running back, quarterback, receiver, or even offensive lineman. His play speed is elite, and he makes like difficult for opposing offenses as an outside linebacker.     Peterson's athleticism is frankly shocking. That's on display most clearly when teams try to run wide. Often, Peterson beats his own (very talented) teammates to the ball from his middle linebacker position, and he tracks the hip well to make clean tackles. He's a complete linebacker, capable against the run and the pass, both in coverage and as a blitzer. He had a sack and a pick against Northwestern.    <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Defensive Back</h3>    Geathers is being recruited to play linebacker by several top schools, but we've listed him as a versatile defensive back. That tracks with how he plays. He'll come down and play the run well, but he thrives as a hybrid safety who can play man coverage in the slot and play the run as an extra linebacker. He has a pick six and several excellent plays in coverage already this season.     Dollard is an extremely athletic defensive back who also excels on special teams. The Charlotte Country Day transfer has fantastic speed. Because of his ability to flip his hips and match receivers, Providence Day can play plenty of man coverage against most teams, opening a lot of playbook options. He's already flashed as a kick and punt returner on a team full of options for those positions.     Liles flies a bit under the radar in a loaded Providence Day secondary, but he's a valuable piece at corner for the Chargers. Liles talent allows the defense to be multiple and puts guys in the position to make plays.     Jones is a versatile athlete and kick returner who is just a couple of seasons into specializing at safety. He'll line up at safety, corner, and nickel, and he's even being used closer to the line of scrimmage this season. He's more physical than his frame suggests, and he's a guy who can make a game-changing play at any point in the game.     Dobson is the top corner in the state. He's a lab-built, smooth-hipped, lengthy corner prospect with ball skills, and a surprising physicality in the running game. He's a sub-4.4 guy who can recover on the rare instances in which receivers gain any separation, and he locks down an entire side of the field, forcing the ball to the rest of the talented Hough defense.     Cooper has really stepped up his game as a senior, playing all over the field for the Chargers. He's a physical safety who has taken his coverage skills to another level. He's leading Providence Day in tackles this season, has forced several incompletions, and even blocked a kick.     Another versatile defender, Daye is a long corner prospect with ball skills who is electric with the ball in his hands. He plays longer than his height would suggest, and the West Charlotte transfer has already made an impact for Hough. The Campbell commit gets overshadowed by a couple of the FBS commits on the roster, but he's wildly talented and should make plenty of big plays this season.
