Expert Analysis
Matt Morrow | Prep Redzone Scout
Davion has moved over to Hough High School for his senior season, leaving West Charlotte High School after establishing himself as one of the top athletes in the state of North Carolina. Davion is being recruited primarily as a defensive back, but still shows the ability to make some special plays with the ball in his hands on offense as a wide receiver. As a defensive back, Davion has elite instincts from the safety position and has made several highlight plays showing excellent range in coverage. Davion also doesn’t shy away from contact, making several big hits throughout the years in both run support and pass coverage. From a recruiting perspective, Davion is making some visits now – most recently Clemson. Davion has also received recent offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, and Miami.

Davion has changed schools for his senior year, going from West Charlotte to Hough. Davion has played some wide receiver in the past and has looked smooth doing so, but a lot of the recruiting attention and offers have been for his future over on the defensive side of the ball as a safety. Davion’s speed and range as a defensive back are very impressive, and obviously, he exhibits the ball skills to be a full package player at the position. Since the end of the season, Davion has received offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, Miami, Auburn & West Virginia since the end of the season. A special talent who is a strong contender to make this 704 Junior Bowl team.

While Jones has the ability to play both ways, we’re close to changing him to a defensive back in the system. His closing speed is elite, and he has the ball skills of a receiver on the back end as a safety. That being said, he’s electric with the ball in his hand,s and his first major impact at the college level may be on special teams.

The most impressive play Davion made in this one defensively was a big hit on a Myers Park running back, which showed his run support ability from his defensive back position, but it was also a statement of the physicality that the Lions were going to play with all night long. I thought Davion had some nice pass coverage throughout the night as well, which really helped limit the Mustangs’ passing game to less than 100 yards on the night. Davion finished with 4 total tackles on the night, three of them being solo tackles.

You’re probably going to see Davion in both our offensive and defensive playmakers in this one, because he had a solid game on both sides of the ball for the Lions. With him playing more offense in this one, Davion had a couple of key catches on 3rd downs to keep the chains moving in the Lions’ offense. His presence in the offensive formation helps keep defenses honest, and I think he’s going to be a very important player going into this week’s game against Hough.

Head Coach Sam Greiner shared with me that he thought Davion played a good game on both sides of the ball. His numbers may not reflect it, but Davion’s presence was a big deal in the secondary, especially since Lions captain

did not play due to injury. Davion exhibited the speed and range he’s known for on defense, while his presence offensively opened up some things for his teammates. Defensively, Davion finished with 6 total tackles, 5 of them solo tackles. Offensively, Davion had two catches for 18 yards.
