Jones is a versatile athlete and kick returner who is just a couple of seasons into specializing at safety. He’ll line up at safety, corner, and nickel, and he’s even being used closer to the line of scrimmage this season. He’s more physical than his frame suggests, and he’s a guy who can make a game-changing play at any point in the game.

While slightly undersized for your prototypical SEC safety, Jones is as smooth an athlete as you’ll find. While he plays safety, that isn’t his first, or even most natural position, and I envision him playing in the slot at the next level. South Carolina sees him as a versatile chess piece to deploy defensively, and he’s likely an early contributor on special teams, perhaps as a kick returner or a gunner on the punt team. He’s a sure tackler, especially for his size, but the thing that will turn heads is his natural movement in the secondary and elite closing speed, whether he’s getting to ball carriers or passes.

Coming up soon in July, Davion Jones Davion Jones 6'1" | 175 lbs | DB William A. Hough | 2027 State NC will make his final college commitment decision as well. Davion came into the Hough program after starring at West Charlotte over the past 3 years. Davion has narrowed his options down to a final five of the following schools, in no particular order: South Carolina, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, and Indiana. No matter who ends up with him, they will get an incredibly talented and athletic phenom of a player. His range and physicality at the safety position, I think, are unmatched in the state. And then you see the speed and explosiveness on both sides of the ball – I think you could run a little package offensively on the next level, too, if you wanted to. That being said, I’ll be excited to see Davion make his choice – he’s grown so much from when I saw him as a freshman making big plays in big games on Varsity.

Davion has moved over to Hough High School for his senior season, leaving West Charlotte High School after establishing himself as one of the top athletes in the state of North Carolina. Davion is being recruited primarily as a defensive back, but still shows the ability to make some special plays with the ball in his hands on offense as a wide receiver. As a defensive back, Davion has elite instincts from the safety position and has made several highlight plays showing excellent range in coverage. Davion also doesn’t shy away from contact, making several big hits throughout the years in both run support and pass coverage. From a recruiting perspective, Davion is making some visits now – most recently Clemson. Davion has also received recent offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, and Miami.

Davion has changed schools for his senior year, going from West Charlotte to Hough. Davion has played some wide receiver in the past and has looked smooth doing so, but a lot of the recruiting attention and offers have been for his future over on the defensive side of the ball as a safety. Davion’s speed and range as a defensive back are very impressive, and obviously, he exhibits the ball skills to be a full package player at the position. Since the end of the season, Davion has received offers from Oklahoma, Missouri, Miami, Auburn & West Virginia since the end of the season. A special talent who is a strong contender to make this 704 Junior Bowl team.

While Jones has the ability to play both ways, we’re close to changing him to a defensive back in the system. His closing speed is elite, and he has the ball skills of a receiver on the back end as a safety. That being said, he’s electric with the ball in his hand,s and his first major impact at the college level may be on special teams.
