Continue ReadingThe 2027 Watch List has made its debut and 100 of some of the top freshmen in the state have been added. While there will be many more added through the next three years, it’s important to recognize some of the 2027 prospects and start getting them on the radar. Here are some 2027 quarterbacks that have shown early signs of developing into future college prospects.
The early leader in the clubhouse for top quarterback in the 2027 class is Hedgesville’s Chaz Milburn Chaz Milburn 6’1″ | 170 lbs | QB Hedgesville | 2027 WV . Unfortunately, he suffered an early injury that caused him to miss most of the season and has limited film right now but from getting to see him perform in person at a camp before his freshman season I can vouch for him. Milburn has made steady progress developing his body and increasing his size since I’ve last seen him which will benefit him for his sophomore season. He’s well ahead of the curve from a developmental standpoint compared to most freshmen quarterbacks and a big off-season could catapult him above the others. Milburn is a smooth operator from the pocket who often looks like a veteran quarterback out there. He throws a pretty ball that can stretch the field but also throws with nice touch at all three levels. Milburn also has a solid mechanical base to build on with good technique. With a hopefully fully healthy sophomore season, I expect Milburn to begin to get on college radars and see himself get noticed.
A dual-threat 2027 quarterback that I like is Washington’s Braylon Holmes Braylon Holmes 6’2″ | 185 lbs | QB Washington | 2027 WV . Holmes has tremendous athletic upside and great early size for a freshman QB at 6’2 185. He has very good speed but is also a physical runner who’s tough to bring down on first contact. Holmes throws well on the run and will only continue to become more comfortable inside the pocket. Right now, he’s a run-first quarterback who’s still developing as a passer but has the athletic tools to become a polished passer. I expect Holmes to be the full-time QB1 for the Washington Patriots in 2024 and a strong off-season of development while being the guy at QB should pay dividends in his game next season.

Isaiah Heflin Isaiah Heflin 6’0″ | 180 lbs | QB Liberty-Harrison | 2027 WV was the varsity starting quarterback for the Liberty-Harrison Mountaineers this season as a freshman and was an All-Big 10 performer as a defensive back. Heflin is a 6’0 180 athletic quarterback who can be a dual-threat QB in the right scheme and runs a good amount of called QB runs in their system. He’s a very good scrambler who can extend plays with his legs while also keeping his eyes downfield and not taking off to run the first chance he gets. Heflin is an accurate passer on the run and when rolling out and throws with nice touch at all three levels. He can put some zip on the ball when needed but is more of a touch passer at this time with a quick release. Added size and strength will further benefit him in the running game and with arm strength but Heflin has natural tools and ability to build around.
Tug Valley freshman starting varsity quarterback Preston May Preston May 5’9″ | 155 lbs | QB Tug Valley | 2027 WV is a quarterback to know in Southern WV. May played in 8 games this season passing for 1,182 yards and 20 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions while completing 61% of his passes. While he has some catching up to do in the size department at 5’9 155, I thought May showed fluid throwing mechanics with a quick release. May has your classic over-the-top delivery on his throws with a high release point. He does a nice job getting the ball out quickly and on time on RPOs. May throws with nice touch and has good ball placement at all three levels. Velocity and arm strength will continue to get better as he grows and gets stronger, but May has shown some good things early on as a freshman.
The next great Martinsburg quarterback may just be 2027 Brian Dick Brian Dick 5’11” | 190 lbs | QB Martinsburg | 2027 WV . Dick was the Bulldogs’ JV quarterback this season as a freshman which is an accomplishment in and of itself in that program. While QB1 for the 2024 season will likely be highly ranked 2025 ATH Koi Fagan Koi Fagan 6’0″ | 165 lbs | ATH Martinsburg | 2025 State WV , I could see Dick stepping in that spot for his junior and senior seasons in 2025 and 2026. The 5’10 175 freshman reminds me a lot of their graduating quarterback this season and is in the same mold as Murphy Clement Murphy Clement 5’11” | 190 lbs | ATH Martinsburg | 2024 State WV as a run-first quarterback. Dick is a natural playmaker with the ball in his hands and a fluid runner with good speed and quickness. Limited passing highlights right now so we’ll save the evaluation for that part of his game for a later date. Dick could also develop into a high-level linebacker as well in the future as he continues to get bigger. He should at least be a special teams player for the Bulldogs’ varsity in 2024 where he saw some action this season and is a name to follow for the next three years.

I thought 2027 Cabell Midland quarterback Mason Salmons Mason Salmons 5’10” | 165 lbs | QB Cabell Midland | 2027 WV popped on his freshman highlight tape and could be in contention to be the varsity QB1 in 2024. Salmons is the son of Cabell Midland head coach Luke Salmons, and you can tell from watching his film that he’s a coach’s son from his level of development. He has a live arm that can stretch the field and throws a pretty and accurate deep ball. Salmons does a great job of leading his receivers and hitting them in stride while showing a big arm. He throws an accurate ball from a variety of angles and platforms while on the move. Salmons showed playmaking ability with his legs as well and can beat you with his legs if you lose contain. If he can continue to get bigger I think he’s one of the higher-ceiling 2027 quarterbacks that we’ve been able to evaluate to this point.
Wheeling Park always has some talented gunslingers and 2027 QB Jay Bordas Jay Bordas 6’0″ | 165 lbs | QB Wheeling Park | 2027 WV could be the next in line. While #2 ranked 2025 QB Aiden Davis Aiden Davis 5’11” | 170 lbs | QB Wheeling Park | 2025 OH will continue to be the varsity starter in 2024, Bordas could slide right in after him for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. He has the family pedigree of being a great athlete as his older sister Alexis is one of, if not the top girls basketball prospect in the state. The younger Bordas was the quarterback of the Patriots’ JV team this season as a freshman and already showed early signs of being a well-developed QB. He has a live arm with great throwing mechanics for a quarterback his age and can make some high-level throws on difficult routes. Bordas has nice touch on his passes and places the ball well throwing a very catchable ball. His footwork on his dropbacks is sound and has fluid movement from snap to throw. Bordas is ahead of the game fundamentally and technically and has a bright future at the position.

The Parkersburg Big Reds will have an opening at the varsity quarterback position in 2024 and 2027 QB Tyler Cameron Tyler Cameron 5’9″ | 150 lbs | QB Parkersburg | 2027 WV will throw his hat into the ring for the spot. The 5’9 150 freshman commanded the Big Reds’ freshmen team this season and flashed some things on film that make you feel good about his future outlook. Cameron operates in the pocket like an experienced quarterback showing a calm presence. He does a nice job using his legs and athleticism to move around inside the pocket and can climb the pocket or escape it to make a play. Downfield throws are a work in progress but Cameron is a fluid passer on rollouts and bootlegs. Whoever steps in for the graduating David Parsons David Parsons 6’3″ | 205 lbs | QB Parkersburg | 2024 State WV will have big shoes to fill but Cameron should develop into a quality varsity quarterback in time whether it’s next season or farther down the line.
The Winfield Generals will be looking to sure up the quarterback spot with 2024 QB/ATH Chase Massey Chase Massey 6’2″ | 175 lbs | ATH Winfield | 2024 State WV graduating this year and freshman Jared Miller Jared Miller 6’0″ | 170 lbs | QB Winfield | 2027 WV will be in the mix. Miller is a nice-sized young quarterback at 6’0 170 who also has the athleticism to run Winfield’s unique offense. He has great playmaking ability on called runs and when scrambling. His early size and athleticism make him a tough tackle for defenders and Miller showed quality speed and twitch as a freshman. While passing highlights were limited, the ones he did have showed good throwing mechanics and effortless passes. Miller has the arm to hit on deep balls with ease and he can throw with velocity. He seems to have the perfect skill set to run their style of offense whether it’s next season or in the future.

2027 Buffalo quarterback Grant Weaver Grant Weaver 5’10” | 140 lbs | QB Buffalo | 2027 WV was thrust into action quicker than he or his coaches had probably planned on when the incumbent starter transferred out, but he flashed some potential in his first season of high school football. Weaver is a very athletic option at the quarterback position who’s still raw as a passer but can continue developing in that area. He can make some highlight reel throws when he’s using his scrambling ability, and if he can take the next step in his passing development he’ll be a major headache for opposing defensive coordinators. Weaver’s athleticism gives him some options positionally who could eventually move to RB/WR/DB which makes him an intriguing 2027 prospect. If he puts in the time and work over the off-season with his passing development, Weaver can solidify that QB1 spot for the next three seasons for the Bison.
