The West Virginia rankings were in need of an overhaul and over 50 new prospects have been added to the list since our last update. Our preseason rankings update now shows the Top 100 athletes in WV and will be updated and expanded again mid-season. Here are some of the new offensive additions to the Top 100 that have made a name for themselves since our last update.

[player_tooltip player_id='865453' first='JacQai' last='Long'] - Hurricane | QB
Overall Ranking: #4 | Position Ranking: #1

We have a new #1 ranked QB in our 2024 rankings that's ready to show the Mountain State who the top dog is again at the position. [player_tooltip player_id='865453' first='JacQai' last='Long'] is a familiar name in the state that spent last season at Ohio powerhouse Archbishop Hoban as a junior but will be returning to WV at Hurricane High School for his senior season. Long spent his first two years of high school at Capital before his one-year departure to Ohio. He just recently committed to Marshall to play football in college and should be the top QB in WV for the 2023 season.

[player_tooltip player_id='884177' first='Andreas' last='Hunter'] - John Marshall | OL
Overall Ranking: #12 | Position Ranking: #3

John Marshall has a pair of talented offensive linemen that have seen their stock rise this summer with the first one being OT [player_tooltip player_id='884177' first='Andreas' last='Hunter']. Hunter is an impressive athlete for an offensive lineman and has the size at 6'5 300 to be a very good offensive tackle in college. Hunter has his pick of D2 schools and also picked up an offer from D1 Maine and a PWO offer from WVU. I expect his stock to continue to rise through the season and he has traits you just can't teach. I would be shocked if Hunter doesn't sign with a D1 program in December.

[player_tooltip player_id='884178' first='Caleb' last='Yates'] - John Marshall | OL
Overall Ranking: #13 | Position Ranking: #4

Speaking of talented John Marshall offensive linemen, 6'4 320 [player_tooltip player_id='884178' first='Caleb' last='Yates'] is the other Monarch that has seen his stock skyrocket this summer. Yates is the starting center for the Monarchs and the offers have been flowing in this summer. Youngstown State was the first D1 program to offer Yates and also has a PWO offer from WVU. Like Hunter, he also has his pick of D2 schools. I'm told he is speaking with a few other D1 teams that are close to pulling the trigger on an offer and could increase his spot in the rankings even more. Yates is one of the stronger athletes in WV and it's no surprise why so many colleges are high on him.

[player_tooltip player_id='880797' first='Dominick' last='Collins'] - Princeton | WR
Overall Ranking: #15 | Position Ranking: #3

Princeton's [player_tooltip player_id='880797' first='Dominick' last='Collins'] might be the fastest football player in the state of WV. That includes high school AND college players. Collins is a 4.2 40 kind of speed guy and that's extremely rare company. I know 40 times are often inflated but Collins ran a 4.29 at the Coalfields & Co Showcase and backed that time up with a 4.25 at a WVU camp. The only question with him for D1 schools is whether can he run crisp routes and have the twitch to go with the speed. I certainly believe he's a D1 talent and I expect some to take a chance on Collins this year.

[player_tooltip player_id='865459' first='Chase' last='Massey'] - Winfield | QB
Overall Ranking: #24 | Position Ranking: #5

Winfield QB [player_tooltip player_id='865459' first='Chase' last='Massey'] is transferring into WV from Wake Forest High School in North Carolina and should quickly become one of the top QBs in the state this season. He recently picked up his first D1 offer from in-state Marshall University and I'm excited to see him bring his talent to WV. Massey only played in five games last season at Wake Forest so there isn't a ton of film on him out there for now. Between that and him being new to WV high school football makes Massey a very intriguing prospect and could easily vault up our rankings in the mid-season update. It will be interesting to see how Winfield, who was an option team last season, uses the 6'2 170 athletic QB this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='880798' first='Amar' last='Dover'] - Martinsburg | WR
Overall Ranking: #30 | Position Ranking: #4

Amar "Buzz" Dover had a big junior season for the Martinsburg Bulldogs as a junior in 2022 and comes in at #4 in our WR rankings and 30th overall in WV. Dover hauled in 55 passes for 902 yards and 11 TDs last season and I expect him to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark this season on a loaded Martinsburg team. Dover showed a nice combination of speed and twitch as a junior and is really dangerous after the catch. It will be hard to surpass the three receivers in front of him but with a big senior year it's possible that he'll move into the Top 3 by year's end.

[player_tooltip player_id='865456' first='Sawyer' last='Vanmatre'] - Wahama | ATH
Overall Ranking: #37 | Position Ranking: #2

Wahama might be Class A but they have one of the best overall athletes in WV with ATH [player_tooltip player_id='865456' first='Sawyer' last='Vanmatre']. Vanmatre is the QB for the White Falcons but I like him as an ATH that could play a few different positions at the next level. The 6'3 210 rising senior was a Class A First Team All-State performer in 2022 and had the rare achievement of surpassing 1,000 yards for both passing and rushing. Vanmatre threw for just over 1,000 yards and 17 TDs and had an astounding 1,637 rushing yards and 32 TDs as a junior. I could see him playing receiver or tight end and even linebacker at the next level. There is so much talent and athleticism to work with for any college team that brings Vanmatre in.

[player_tooltip player_id='145663' first='Ian' last='Crookshanks'] - East Fairmont | QB
Overall Ranking: #38 | Position Ranking: #7

East Fairmont's [player_tooltip player_id='145663' first='Ian' last='Crookshanks'] is a prospect that I've had the pleasure of seeing in person this summer and he impressed me enough to warrant a Top 40 overall ranking and #7 overall QB in the WV 2024 class. I love Crookshanks' arm talent and he can drive the ball down the field. He has a physical build at 6'1 200 and his arm strength is what jumped out to me the most from watching him. Crookshanks threw for just under 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior in 2022 and I'm expecting him to increase those numbers even more as a senior in 2023.

[player_tooltip player_id='893398' first='Conor' last='Fitzpatrick'] - John Marshall | K
Overall Ranking: #40 | Position Ranking: #3

The third Monarch to make our Top 50 is K/P [player_tooltip player_id='893398' first='Conor' last='Fitzpatrick']. Fitzpatrick has really seen his stock rise this year and I thought he made a huge improvement from his sophomore to junior year. He earned Class AAA First Team All-State as a punter last season and in my opinion, he's an even better placekicker than punter. I was really impressed with the versatility of his junior highlights and he showed he can do many different things on special teams. Fitzpatrick handled every kicking and punting duty for the Monarchs last season and I expect that will continue for his senior year. He picked up an offer from D2 Alderson Broaddus and I would wager that number will increase this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='884082' first='Ashton' last='Reed'] - Westside | TE
Overall Ranking: #41 | Position Ranking: #2

Unfortunately, Westside's [player_tooltip player_id='884082' first='Ashton' last='Reed'] was injured for most of the 2022 season and is flying a bit under the radar right now. However, you can't teach 6'4 265 and athletic, and that makes him a very intriguing prospect even with limited film right now. With that size, will he be a tight end or defensive lineman at the next level? Even as big as he is, Westside lined him up in the slot, wide receiver, and even running back on offense. That's a scary sight to see for defenders and the ceiling is very high for Reed. He's one of the most intriguing prospects in WV this season and could easily vault into the Top 25 with a good and healthy senior year.
