The VMI commitment is our top defensive back to end the 2024 recruiting cycle. While he may be on the shorter side, Powell is a fluid athlete who has some of the best athleticsim in the entire 2024 recruiting class. He shows plus abilies in multiple types of coverage, has fluid hips, and stay with his wide receivers and plays both the man and the ball very well. You could line him at multiple positions and you would be able to get high productivity out of Powell.

Robert “Bobby” Powell is one of the top defensive backs in the 2024 class and recently committed to D1 VMI to continue his football career. The 5’9 170 senior is a high-level athlete who has had an increased role on offense this season where you can really see how much athleticism he has. Powell is a very fluid athlete who has great closing and recovery speed at corner. He’s very good in man-to-man play and his quickness getting upfield coming out of his back pedal is some of the best I’ve seen. Powell has very sudden movement which puts quarterbacks in a very tough position because he can just make plays and break on balls that most high school DBs can’t make. Powell could easily play on offense at the next level as either a running back or slot receiver but I’m confident he’ll stick as a defensive back where his ceiling is very high.

Joining Thomas in the Mohigans’ secondary is Robert “Bobby” Powell. Powell is one of the best 2024 DB prospects in the state but is also a playmaker on offense. His game likely best translates as a defensive back at the next level but he could certainly play some running back and slot receiver as well. Powell is a very fluid athlete who has a good pack pedal and enough speed to make up ground and break on balls. He looked to be very fundamentally sound on film and has the ability to take away one side of the field at corner. At 5’9, he could be big enough to stay at corner in college or could slide over to nickel or even drop back to safety. With what he showed on film though, I’d be comfortable keeping him at corner. Powell also isn’t afraid to come up and hit you either and also showed to be a threat in the return game.
Overall, Powell is a very good all-around athlete and there is a lot to work with in his game.
