Expert Analysis

Despite being hurt for a chunk of the season, Hicks proved that he was one of the top defensive lineman on the east coast. When Hicks was healthy, he was a force that terrorized offenses up front. In the playoffs he was a big factor to help Iona Prep dominate the line of scrimmage and guide the Gaels to another AAA Championship appearance.

You can make the argument that Hicks is the best overall defensive player in the entire Catholic league this year. He recently committed to Minnesota after he put together a monster junior season where he helped Iona to a AAA title appearance. At 6’4 and 250, what people have to watch out for is his speed. Hicks can fly and he brings the intensity and never gives up on any play.

Jaylin Hicks Jaylin Hicks 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL Iona Prep | 2024 State NY is such a unique player because he has the size and power to dominate on the interior but he played a lot of his reps at 4-tech and 5-tech. However, Hicks is super lean and with the power he already has is not far away from being able to dominate at the next level using his strength. Hicks is a really good run defender where his gap integrity is very consistent and his ability to shed blocks and maintain control of his gaps is a quality trait. Hicks also is a really solid tackler, he can make plays in the backfield but also does a really good job of getting his hands on defenders through the hole and making plays within three yards after the LOS. While every quality rep may not end in a highlight worthy play, Hicks is consistent and makes running against Iona Prep very difficult. As a pass rusher, Hicks is really solid using his speed and strength but in terms off his pass rush moves could work to develop more consistent threatening moves as a pass rusher. However, when Hicks does win, he is good at finishing and can get very physical with QBs and RBs in the backfield.

Jaylin Hicks Jaylin Hicks 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL Iona Prep | 2024 State NY is one of my favorite players to watch in the trenches from this class. Hicks has really good upfield burst an incredible get off on the snap. Hicks has some of the best pass rush moves of any defensive lineman in this class with really effective rips and swim moves. Hicks’ quickness and ability to get through blocks is the reason he always is making plays in the backfield or around the line of scrimmage. At 6-4, 250lbs Hicks has great size and athleticism for a defensive end and he is a player who could be a force to reckon with at the FBS level. Hicks has offers from Boston College, Minnesota, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Temple, and UCONN.
