was one that we knew about first. Before he even entered high school, we thought Covington had a chance to be a special player. At Booker T Washington, Covington was outstanding on both sides of the ball. He continued to do the same thing at Union over the last two seasons. And when we look back at his senior year, you can make the argument that he was the most important player to the Redhawks. And we are fired up that he’s getting to play at the D1 level after signing with Tulsa. No matter where he lines up, he can play.

became the most important player on the Redhawk roster. Covington was already one of Union’s top defenders. But he has also pitched in on the offensive side of the ball at running back. And in their semifinal match-up with Owasso last season, Covington put the offense on his back during the extra periods. We’re looking forward to seeing how much he plays on both sides of the ball this week against the Trojans.

is an absolute star when he’s on the football field and really has been since he was a freshman at Booker T Washington. Covington came into this season as one of the top returners on a defense where the strength was in the secondary. But in the last two weeks, Covington has had to play both sides of the ball and fill in at running back and he is more than capable of being a next level prospect on offense as well as defense. With Covington at running back, he ran for over 200 yards and four touchdowns last week and had one of the best runs that we’ve seen this season. Whether it’s on offense or defense, Covington has the potential to be an absolute game changer at the next level. And with the playoffs right around the corner, we’re looking forward to seeing what impact he has on the Redhawks in November.

Union went on the road to Edmond for the second consecutive week and for the second consecutive week they found themselves in a fight. The Redhawks would run away with a 37-21 win over Edmond Memorial and senior

put on the Superman cape in the win. Covington, who is one of Union’s best defenders, would make his biggest impact on offense as Union needed a running back while they dealt with injuries to the position. Covington responded by going for well over 200 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. And one of those four touchdown runs quite possibly was the best run we’ve seen from any player in Oklahoma this season. Covington and the Redhawks officially locked up the district championship with the win on Friday night.

was the player of the game with his impact on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Covington had a pair of carries on offense and one of them went for a touchdown. Covington didn’t play much offense in the first half of the season but we expect to see more of him on offense as the Redhawks get closer to the playoffs. But on defense, Covington was a monster on that side of the ball. He finished with a sack, an interception and he also forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by the Redhawks and led to more points in the first half. Covington is one of the more underrated stars in the state’s 2024 class and he showed why in the win over Mustang. Union will need him over the next two months.

might be the best player on this Union roster that doesn’t get enough credit for how special he is. Covington has been an absolute athlete since he was a freshman and we like how the Redhawks use him on the defensive side of the ball. But that’s not the only thing he can do as he’s proven in the past, both with Booker T Washington and with Union last year, that he can be an impact player on offense. In last year’s semifinal game against Owasso, Covington came in at running back and helped the Redhawks in the extra periods. But on defense, he leads a back seven that has a lot of experience and overall talent. I personally have watched Covington make plays even before he stepped into high school and there is no doubt that he is a talented player that will make an impact at the next level. The only question we have is which position?

is one of our favorite prospects in the state’s 2024 class. We watched him very early on in his high school career and he’s only gotten better and better. The versatility and athleticism is the thing that makes him so special and last year was a perfect example of that. Covington earned a starting role on the defensive side of the ball but in the semifinals against Owasso, he was put into a position where he needed to play running back. And he did a really good job and kept extending that game while Union dealt with injuries. Covington’s main priority will be on defense but he gives Union options when they need it and he has proven he can produce on a big stage.

and it feels like we’ve been writing about him since he was a freshman. Covington moved to Union during the summer of last year and was an instant impact player for the Union defense in an already talented secondary. Now, as we head into this season, Covington has the potential to be one of the best at his position in Class 6A-1 this fall. Last year, he was more of a hybrid defensive back where he could play a traditional safety role but he could also move closer to the line of scrimmage. Late in the season, Covington would give Union a boost at running back in their semifinal game against Owasso. The versatility with Covington is off the charts and he’s a prospect that has seen his recruitment really start taking off over the last six months. While we didn’t get a chance to see him during the offseason or in spring drills, Covington is going to be a player to watch for Union this fall.

after an outstanding junior campaign where he showcased his versatility. All of the prospects on this breakdown excelled at the cornerback spot so far but Covington has been a player that can play multiple spots within the secondary and he had a strong junior season in his first year in Union’s defense. In fact, the Redhawks also used him on the offensive side of the ball as a running back and Covington was a big part of their success in the semifinal game that went to multiple overtimes with Owasso. But Covington should be a really good safety prospect when it comes to the next level but we could also see him moving around and playing a few different positions because there is a very high game IQ there.

is who I believe was the most valuable player (MVP) for Union last night. He contributed and got it done on both sides of the ball. His team was down 13-0 in the third quarter until he came up with a big pick six for a 39 yard interception return. He came up with some tackles throughout the game, as well. On offense, he was unstoppable when it got to overtime. He had an eight yard carry, two yard carry, 21 yard carry, 16 yard gain (which included a spin move to pick up an extra five yards) and several others in regulation. In overtime, he feasted like a Thanksgiving buffet. In 2OT, he had a seven yard run to get to the one yard line. This was then followed by a one yard touchdown run. In 3OT, he had a six yard touchdown run. The 4OT was the same story: six yard run, three yard run, and it was topped off by a one yard touchdown run to tie it. Almost a mirror image in the 5OT: eight yard run, one yard run, followed by a one yard touchdown run. He ended with a pick six in the third quarter, as well as four overtime touchdowns. It was spectacular to watch him dominate both sides of the ball and keep his team in it.
