Top Performers from the Battle at the Beach

<p>Prep Redzone attended the Battle at the Beach passing tournament at Edison High in Huntington Beach this past Saturday.</p>   <p>The event is the marquee passing tournament of the summer and some of the top programs in Southern California competed. St. John Bosco was dominant throughout the tournament and beat Centennial in the championship game.</p>   <p>As a disclaimer, I'd like to point out that I did not get to get a good look at every team that competed, so some players who performed very well may be omitted from this list. I will have a notebook with general thoughts from the event later this evening.</p>   <p>Here are some players who stood out at the tournament:</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ST. JOHN BOSCO</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Nearly every play I watched Bosco's offense run, Tubbs was flying down the field wide open. He can mix speeds throughout the route and is one of the better route runners in the state. Tubbs was making catches over the middle with bigger guys covering him and can catch anything remotely near him. He was making throws into tight windows and had good timing with all his receivers. Malau'ulu was consistently making the right choices with the ball and made things look easy for Bosco's offense. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/koa1malauulu/status/2076502588800070096?s=20 </div></figure>    <p class="text-gray-700">Davis was covering a ton of the field as a safety and was the first guy coach <strong>Jason Negro</strong> mentioned when talked about Bosco's defensive performance. He's physical at the point of attack and closed to the ball quickly. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/DillonDavis_Fb/status/2007972798912926164?s=20 </div></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>CENTENNIAL</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Jefferson's accuracy was among the best of the day for the quarterbacks at the event and he was putting the ball in perfect places near the sidelines. He was a physical mismatch for a lot of the corners and was bringing down balls in traffic frequently. Jefferson and Hale are very comfortable playing together and will put up huge numbers for Centennial this season. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/QuentinHalee15/status/2063072030673744088?s=20 </div></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ORANGE LUTHERAN</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Orange Lutheran had multiple receivers have big days but Flores stood out, particularly in the first game of the day against Mission Viejo. He has good positional versatility and can be a safety or a nickel corner. Johnson was flying around the field and closing open windows throughout the day quickly. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/king21_rich/status/2076742809026224268?s=20 </div></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>EDISON</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Thomson will be a four-year starter for Edison this season and looked sharper on Saturday than I have ever seen him. He was spreading the ball around and had great timing with his receivers. Edison hung with some of the top teams in the state and Thomson was a big reason for that. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/ocvarsityguy/status/2076205843146756300?s=20 </div></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>MISSION VIEJO</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Mission Viejo's defense was outstanding on Saturday and Hicks stood out with his shut down defense from multiple positions. Teams were avoiding throwing his direction and he closes to the ball so fast. He has great recovery length and plays with just the right amount of physicality without drawing flags. </p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/JordanHicksss/status/2076075830699319497?s=20 </div></figure>    <p class="text-gray-700">Mission Viejo had a lot of injuries throughout the day with its elite tight end group, but Junker stepped up and was the biggest scoring threat for the Diablos. He can create separation with his route running and is physical at the point of attack. He flat out makes plays and was consistently running by defenders in man and zone coverage throughout the day. Koo can bring down any ball that is near him and was beating some of the top defensive backs in the state.</p>    <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/Haydenkoo0/status/2076712838589211023?s=20 </div></figure>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>SANTA MARGARITA</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Santa Margarita's defense has a lot of guys stepping into bigger roles and the Eagles need the consistency and experience Williams brings at corner. Deleon was making big catches in traffic and was consistently getting open throughout the day. He's a baseball player who missed a lot of Capo's 7-on-7 stuff during the spring but you couldn't tell when you watched his chemistry with the receivers on Saturday. He stood out when you watched the Dons and he was getting open regardless of who was covering him. His route running was excellent and his physicality was a problem for a lot of opponents.
