We're just over six weeks away from the season, and we've been looking at the first half of the schedule. I love compelling non-conference matchups, so we've been highlighting some of the best from across classifications. I wanted to include the private schools in this exercise, but since conferences get murky there, I thought I'd focus on games between the public and private schools of the state. Here are three intriguing matchups between the state's two main associations.

*Get 30% off your first billing cycle with promo code Helms30*

Three 2A Non-Conference Matchups To Watch

Editor's Note: Check out our other non-conference matchup previews:
3A
5A
6A
7A
8A

Providence Day @ Hough (9/4)

Let's start with the low-hanging fruit. I got texts from multiple people associated with each school in the days leading up to the schedule announcement, all saying some variation of "it's happening."

Providence Day had only one game against North Carolina competition last year that finished within three scores, while Hough locked in around the end of September and coasted to an 8A state championship. The Huskies allowed 33 total points in their final nine games.

There's too much talent to mention every player here, so I'll focus on the most intriguing matchup. Providence Day's [player_tooltip player_id='1610601' first='Cole' last='Cater'] is no stranger to the varsity field, but his experience is as a backup in blowouts. He's the guy at quarterback this year, and he doesn't have much time to ease in, with Myers Park, Rolesville, and Hough to start the year.

He faces an elite defensive backfield anchored by South Carolina commits [player_tooltip player_id='378926' first='Davion' last='Jones'] and Joshua Dobson. Safety [player_tooltip player_id='1788073' first='Jackson' last='Heath'] took a massive step forward last year and is committed to Army, while transfer [player_tooltip player_id='2175503' first='Justice' last='Daye'] takes the final cornerback spot. There isn't a weak spot there.

The Providence Day receiving corps might also be the best in the state. Charlotte commit [player_tooltip player_id='1332065' first='Ethan' last='Dempsey'] is the top returning receiver, followed closely by Wake Forest commit [player_tooltip player_id='1150380' first='Steele' last='Fletcher']. The Chargers brought in our top overall prospect in the 2028 class, [player_tooltip player_id='651159' first='Braylon' last='Clark'], to be a potential star X-receiver.

Ultimately, both of these teams will leave as the unquestioned team to beat in their association. The intriguing part is that a loss could be the only blemish on either team's schedule.

Charlotte Catholic @ Charlotte Country Day (8/28)

Charlotte Catholic stacked its schedule this season, taking on both Country Day and Charlotte Christian before a 6A showdown with Kings Mountain. Country Day has amassed young talent, and this could be the year the Buccaneers take the next step.

It starts on offense, with quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1970637' first='Achilles' last='Morales'] at the helm. He gets back several key pieces, including the injured [player_tooltip player_id='1060044' first='Kingston' last='Curry'], who played both ways as a freshman.

Defensively, the Buccaneers are anchored at linebacker by senior [player_tooltip player_id='1607761' first='Bobby' last='Wakefield'], with high-upside [player_tooltip player_id='2110472' first='Jerry' last='Tate'] on the defensive line and Curry and Dollard on the back end.

We know Charlotte Catholic is going to run the ball and play disciplined defense. [player_tooltip player_id='2145591' first='Max' last='Whalen'] is probably the top back this year for the Cougars, while defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='2124734' first='Jackson' last='Williamson'] is the top defensive recruit.

One final thing: These teams have two of the top offensive linemen in the state in [player_tooltip player_id='2126175' first='Will' last='Johnson'] (Charlotte Catholic) and [player_tooltip player_id='1276355' first='Charlie' last='Stauffer'] (Country Day). I'm excited to watch them in what should be a physical affair.

Asheville School @ Asheville (9/11)

To my knowledge, last year was the first meeting between these two crosstown rivals, a game the Cougars won, 39-21. There's some serious individual talent here as well as two teams that should have strong seasons.

Asheville School running back [player_tooltip player_id='1728224' first='Shiloh' last='Mukendi'] is a massive back, standing at 6'2" and almost 225 pounds. He's a downhill runner who can wear down a defense. Though the Blues have talent on the outside, I expect a heavy dose of the running game, which will help them avoid defensive back Kayden Whiteside, who transfers into Asheville and joins a talented young secondary.

The Cougars have a trio of talented sophomores in DJaay Jackson, [player_tooltip player_id='2113386' first='Christian' last='Nesby'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2003822' first='TK' last='Davis'], who all hit the weight room hard this offseason.

The rapport between rising juniors Tayvion Williams (QB) and Jam Skyes is impressive, and if they have another strong season, it's hard to see Asheville School getting revenge. Still, it's an intriguing matchup with plenty of key storylines and talent on display.

Our preseason coverage is just getting started.
