Outlook: Decorah ran the table during the 2024 regular season and beat Newton in a the first round of the playoffs. The march ended in the quarterfinals with a 28-24 home loss to North Scott. The Vikings must replace key parts of last year's success but have good production returning, too. [player_tooltip player_id='1619841' first='Trevor' last='Kuennen'] is an exciting two-way contributor. Sexton, Larson and Milburn also shine on both sides of the ball. Franzen and Brynsaas are formidable in the trenches, and Webb looks like a guy ready for a bigger role. Tanner Caddell might be the favorite to take over at QB1, and he also can help on defense. Mason Avila, Landon Quandahl, Jameson LaBelle, Kade O'Hara, Caleb Johnson, Mason Vote, Anthony Putnam, Ian Giddings, [player_tooltip player_id='1696640' first='Davis' last='Walter'], [player_tooltip player_id='1691410' first='Ethan' last='Kuennen'], [player_tooltip player_id='1689780' first='Ray' last='Hayek'] are among a collection of inexperienced players looking to crack the lineup.

WATERLOO EAST

2024 Record: 2-7

Top Returnees: [player_tooltip player_id='1619838' first='Chris' last='Pierce'], QB; Tyrone Parrow, RB; [player_tooltip player_id='1657949' first='Norshawn' last='Pompilus'], RB; [player_tooltip player_id='1596629' first='Gianni' last='Gary'], WR; Jordan Banks, LB; Mileek Micou, DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1654727' first='Jailen' last='Coleman'], DB; Cody Osborne, DL; [player_tooltip player_id='1692303' first='Brayden' last='Card'], OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1694516' first='Makai' last='Phillips'], OL.

Notable Losses: Jah'Khi Parker; Tariq Moore; Isaac Lomas; Ke'Andre Owens; [player_tooltip player_id='1620078' first='Jayden' last='Williams']; Gianni Speller; eeron Harris-Veasley; Adrian Alejo-Rubio; James Johnson;

Key Games:

Outlook: The Trojans can take a step forward this season if members of a group that includes [player_tooltip player_id='1657829' first='Josiahs' last='Spates'], DeShawn Parrow, Majik Holmes, Kenya Joseph, Terrance Sayles, Tyrone Parrow, [player_tooltip player_id='1630530' first='Jadyn' last='Perkins'], [player_tooltip player_id='1631334' first='Isaiah' last='Thomas'], Marvell Rodgers, George Tyler, D'Mariyah Williams, Sakai Walker, [player_tooltip player_id='1654606' first='Jayden' last='Dunn'], [player_tooltip player_id='1691178' first='Jayvion' last='Higham'], [player_tooltip player_id='1696686' first='Davieon' last='Vanarsdale'], [player_tooltip player_id='1704204' first='Kweli' last='Martin'] and Tamarius Jenkins can help pick up the slack for talented players lost to graduation. Pierce showed ability last season and could take a step forward with more consistency. He has two strong backs behind him in Parrow and Pompilus. Gary has a chance to be a really good wideout. Card and Phillips are excellent O-Line anchors. Banks, Micou, Coleman and Osbourne give East playmakers at every level of the defense.

MASON CITY

2024 Record: 3-6

Top Returnees: Jameer Falls, QB; [player_tooltip player_id='1241531' first='Dane' last='Hanson'], QB; [player_tooltip player_id='1241527' first='Drew' last='Hobart'], WR/DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1241530' first='Drayden' last='Witt'], WR/DB; Lincoln Berding, RB/DB; TyAndre Sanchez-Evans, TE/LB; William Blanchard, LB; [player_tooltip player_id='1620078' first='Jayden' last='Williams'], DL; [player_tooltip player_id='1241532' first='Gabe' last='Ries'], OL/DL.

Notable Losses: Javel Lee; Carter Klemesrud; Andrew Novak; AJ Swai; Sam Overbeck.

Key Games:

Outlook: Despite losing several key players to graduation, the Riverhawks bring back enough firepower to increase their win total from year ago. Falls and Hanson are dynamic athletes that can play quarterback, and Hobart and Witt stand out as receivers and defensive backs. Berding, Sanchez-Evans and Ries contribute significantly on both sides of the ball, too. Blanchard at linebacker and Williams on the D-Line make plays. Bennett Miller, Jack Boedeker, Joseph Hauser, [player_tooltip player_id='1705152' first='Landon' last='Arhart'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1271798' first='Dillan' last='Haugen'] are among the lesser experienced student-athletes competing for playing time.

CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER

2024 Record: 7-4 (4A State Quarterfinalist)

Top Returnees: [player_tooltip player_id='1238169' first='Carter' last='Hoffmann'], RB; Cash Parks, QB; Dustin Cook, RB; [player_tooltip player_id='1619867' first='Ryan' last='Kelly'], WR; Will Forman, RB; AJ Evans, TE; Michael Bean, DB; Caleb Loffswold, DB; Jaden DeHeus, LB; Beau Morio, LB; [player_tooltip player_id='1620097' first='Zander' last='Armstrong'], DL; Nolan Wilgenbusch, DL; [player_tooltip player_id='1751466' first='Andrew' last='Pladsen'], OL.

Notable Losses: Cohen Honkomp; Aiden Miller; Jack Downey; Jack Stevenson; Mason Meyer; Gavin Miller; Carson Slaughter; Colin Miller; Jean Ngoma; Eddie Paye-Urey; Ryan Beckmann.

Key Games:

Outlook: The Saints' 2024 ended with a state quarterfinal loss at eventual 4A champion North Polk, unbeaten for the season. They did win at Norwalk in the first round. Xavier will reload in hopes a strong regular season that leads to home playoff games and has the talent to do so. Hoffman is one of 4A's best backs, and Cook and Forman can carry some of the load there as well. Parks was playing well as a sophomore last year before an injury ended his season prematurely. He'll have around the services of Kelly, who caught 51 passes in '24. Evans flashes potential at tight end. Pladsen is poised for a solid senior year anchoring the O-Line. The defense will be formidable with Armstrong and Wilgenbusch holding down the front, DeHaus and Morio patrolling the second level, and Bean and Loffswold guiding the secondary. Sam Schimberg, Sam Leuck, Rex Komenda, Anthony Trotta, Brady O'Donnell, William Montgomery, Shawn Saini, Conor Ryan, Roman Carter, Nicolaus Becu, Zack Borcherding, Andrew Renner, Jonathan Odubasa, Evan Rodriguez, Travis Jasper, Oliver Behmer, Joseph Cataldo, Trace Bryant and other inexperienced Saints will be looking to show they can handle more responsibility.

CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON

2024 Record: 3-6 (5A)

Top Returnees: [player_tooltip player_id='1238171' first='Grady' last='McGuire'], QB; [player_tooltip player_id='1238495' first='Terryion' last='Montgomery'], LB/RB; [player_tooltip player_id='1238496' first='Nick' last='Riley'], RB/LB; [player_tooltip player_id='1751477' first='Fidel' last='Tiah'], WR/DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1238173' first='Brody' last='Griffin'], OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1584996' first='Owen' last='Blackhurst'], OL/DL; Keegan Waters, DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1720004' first='Cassius' last='Ballew-Batte'], DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1617700' first='Willie' last='Davis'], DL/OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1571476' first='Logan' last='Barton']. K/P.

Notable Losses: Brock Davis; Alex Taylor; Will Barnes; Aaron Butikofer; Wyatt Young.

Key Games:

Outlook: The Warriors drop down a class this cycle and are poised to find more success at the level with a strong group returning. McGuire is committed to Sioux Falls as an athlete, and he's a dynamic one playing quarterback for the Warriors. Riley is a prominent two-way contributor, Tiah flashes big-play ability on both sides of the ball, and Montgomery also can get it done on offense and defense. Griffin and Blackhurst are sound building blocks on the O-Line, and Barton is a weapon as a specialist. The defense should be decent with the guys playing both ways along with proven talent in Waters and Ballew-Batte also in the mix. [player_tooltip player_id='1617698' first='Trey' last='Iranzi'], Javion Seals, Kobe Sindt, Gabe Brown, Francois Mutuale, Daityon Ayers, Rowen Shaughnessy, Kobe Sindt, Brogan Ironside and others will have a chance to earn playing time

WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK

2024 Record: 6-4 (4A Playoff Qualifier)

Top Returnees: [player_tooltip player_id='1631367' first='Caleb' last='Schipper'], QB; [player_tooltip player_id='1619985' first='Brady' last='Bodensteiner'], WR/DB; Gehrig Tibbitts, WR/DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1596610' first='Jayden' last='Stephens'], WR/DB; Kael Dewey, RB/DB; [player_tooltip player_id='1631381' first='Mason' last='Hinrichs'], OL; Brady Willis, LB; Owen Lawless, DL/OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1240475' first='Ian' last='Sedgwick'], DL/OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1240483' first='Matt' last='Langner'], DL/OL; [player_tooltip player_id='1751494' first='Gavin' last='Bockholt'], K.

Notable Losses: Wesley Hubbard; Ethan Bibler; Camden Kramer; Charlie Kramer; Nathan Miller; Gavin Stockdale; Sam Wilson; Mitch Moris; Zander Wedemeier.

Key Games:

Outlook: Bibler was a big part of the Go-Hawk offense in 2024, so replacing that production will be paramount. That quest starts with Bodensteiner and Stephens, two of the better two-way performers in this district and beyond. Dewey and Tibbitts also contribute in multiple phases. Schipper is capable of taking a step forward this fall. Hinrichs, Lawless, Sedgwick and Langer provide Waverly-Shell Rock with power in the trenches. Willis is a disruptive defender, and Bockholt can impact games with his leg. Look to a group that includes Mekyver Hagarty, Nolan Johnson, Thomas Meyer-Lillbridge, [player_tooltip player_id='1751494' first='Gavin' last='Bockholt'], Eli Forcier, Owen Kelley, Porter Behrends, [player_tooltip player_id='1631381' first='Mason' last='Hinrichs'], Beckett Cline, [player_tooltip player_id='1657990' first='Eagan' last='Hunt'], [player_tooltip player_id='1696466' first='Easton' last='Jorgenson'], [player_tooltip player_id='1696468' first='Pax' last='Aguilera'], [player_tooltip player_id='1657063' first='Quinn' last='Lockard'], [player_tooltip player_id='1657988' first='Simeon' last='Kroymann'], [player_tooltip player_id='1657058' first='Trevor' last='Beck'] and others to compete to make contributions.
