This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Mustang Broncos!

Mustang Broncos

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #5 In Class 6A-1

Head Coach: Lee Blankenship - 7th Season - 38-30 Record At Mustang

2024 RESULTS (5-6 Record - Lost In Class 6A-1 1st Round)

Sept. 6th - Beat Yukon 52-14
Sept. 13th - Beat Broken Arrow 49-48 (OT)
Sept. 20th - Beat Westmoore 54-30
Sept. 27th - Lost To Moore 21-20
Oct. 4th - Beat Enid 33-32
Oct. 11th - Lost To Jenks 45-13
Oct. 18th - Beat Edmond North 45-27
Oct. 25th - Lost To Bixby 64-35
Nov. 1st - Lost To Norman 40-28
Nov. 8th - Lost To Deer Creek 27-20
1st Round - Lost To Union 38-21

2024 Offensive Scoring Average: 33.6 Points Per Game
2024 Defensive Scoring Average: 35.1 Points Per Game

For the second straight year, Mustang's season got off to a strong start but featured a roller coaster ride in district play, that resulted in an unfavorable playoff seed and an early playoff exit. After going 6-5 during the 2023 season, Mustang would go 5-6 in 2024. The Broncos won three straight to start the 2024 season and won four of their first five games. But after starting the season with a 4-1 record, they would close out the season with a 1-4 record and they fell all the way to the six seed in the district. That forced the Broncos to go on the road and face Union in the first round, where they lost 38-21. All in all, it was another first round exit but there were still highs during the 2024 season. They continued their dominance over rival Yukon, they won an exciting overtime thriller against Broken Arrow and once again, they started the year with a 4-1 mark. If the Broncos can finish seasons strong like they've been able to start, the 2025 season could see them getting back into the conversation with the elite teams in Class 6A-1. Every season when it comes to Class 6A-1, the question is asked about the “best in the west” and who can challenge the Tulsa-area powerhouses. Every year, Mustang is one of the possible answers. This year, they want to leave no doubt.

2025 OUTLOOK

The Broncos are once again one of the top teams on the west side in Class 6A-1 as we head towards the start of the 2025 football season. The Broncos bring back half of their starters from last year's team and there's no doubt that they've gotten better after an offseason, full of new additions to the roster. It starts with a highly regarded quarterback from California but the Broncos have also added some key pieces on both sides of the ball, which makes them look like a much improved team on paper. All in all, six starters return on the offensive side of the ball, and they're adding two more players on offense that have plenty of starting experience elsewhere. Despite going 11-11 in the last two years, the Broncos have had no issues on offense, averaging 30+ points in each year. We think this year's offensive unit has the potential to be the best during this stretch. Again, on paper, they look incredibly explosive on that side of the ball. Defensively, the Broncos also bring back five starters from last year's team but just like with the offense, Mustang will have some “new” starters in players that had plenty of starting experience elsewhere. The Broncos have gotten off to fast starts in each of the last two years but they'll definitely need to do it again this fall. Three of their first four games are on the road. They'll be looking to set the tone early that the 2025 Mustang Broncos will both start fast and finish strong.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Louie Jones - Defensive Lineman (Signed With UCO)
Trajan Williamson - Quarterback (Signed With NEO - All State Honorable Mention)
Waleed Gaines Jr. - Defensive Back (Signed With Army - All State Honorable Mention)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Junior standout [player_tooltip player_id='1297663' first='Gabriel' last='Osborne'] is the first of several additions to Mustang this offseason that will have an immediate impact. Osborne started for Putnam City in the last two seasons and first got on our radar following his freshman season. Osborne has become a legitimate P4 prospect in the state's 2027 class, earning offers from major programs in several conferences. Osborne has the potential to really impact the game defensively but also is an outstanding kick returner. He's listed on Mustang's initial roster as a defensive back. And we'll mention this a bit later, but Osborne brings a lot of athleticism and skill to the secondary and that's quickly become a unit that we really like.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

Senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1041452' first='Jaden' last='Johnson'] will be looking to build off last season, where he led the Broncos in receiving, with over 1,100 yards. All eyes have been on the Johnson twins over the last few years and Jaden has certainly lived up to the hype and gives the Broncos a dangerous weapon on the offensive side of the ball. Mustang's offense was incredibly explosive last season and Johnson was a big reason why. Every time we've watched him in person, he's routinely impressed and will be back this fall, looking to improve his production from a year ago. But as we mentioned a few times earlier, this Mustang offense has the potential to be one of the best in Class 6A-1.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

We mentioned that highly regarded quarterback from California and senior [player_tooltip player_id='401257' first='Jaden' last='O'Neal'] is that quarterback. O'Neal has become one of the more sought after 2026 signal callers in the country. But he committed to Oklahoma and is spending his senior season just a few miles down the road from his future college. O'Neal is a very good looking quarterback but we're looking forward to seeing how he looks against the top competition that Oklahoma has to offer. Based on film we've seen and reports from our PRZ-California writers, O'Neal is the real deal and could lead this Mustang to new heights this fall. He's going to be a major name to know in 6A-1.

Senior linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1699024' first='Josiah' last='Stevens'] leads a very experienced linebacker group into the 2025 season. Stevens is one of three starting linebackers that will be returning this season. The Broncos will be relying on Stevens to set the tone defensively, specifically against the run game. Mustang's coaches are big fans of the instincts that Stevens plays the game with. And when you look at Mustang over the last few years, they've had a few linebackers that have been built in that similar mold. Tall, rangy linebackers that seem to always be in the right place at the right time and have a nose for the football. Stevens and the rest of the defense are hungry for improvement.

Senior wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='595689' first='Ryder' last='Murphy'] is the third and final notable addition to the Mustang lineup, making this offense one of the best in Class 6A-1. Last season, Murphy enjoyed a breakout season at Norman. He would end up being one of the state's best wide receivers and led Class 6A-1 in most receiving categories. Now, he's at Mustang and with Johnson on one side and Murphy on the other, with one of the best quarterbacks in the country throwing the ball, the Broncos are going to be hard to slow down. Murphy enjoyed that breakout season in 2024. But now, he's looking to solidify himself as one of the top playmakers in the state's 2026 class.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

Senior safety [player_tooltip player_id='1332238' first='Tayten' last='Duncan'] is a 2026 prospect that we had circled coming into the 2024 season. Duncan took that next step and became an All State-caliber defensive back. Duncan will be going into his third season as a starter in the Mustang defense. And if there's one area where the Broncos are lacking that experience, it could be in the secondary. Duncan earned a starting role late in the 2023 season and he carried that momentum into the 2024 football season. This offseason, Duncan has emerged as a legitimate D1 prospect, earning his first offer and that could just continue into the fall. We really like the athleticism and talent that Duncan plays with.

(2024 All State Honorable Mention)

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Caden Gordon - 2027 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1689519' first='Cooper' last='Clark'] - 2028 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='670656' first='Derek' last='Straughn'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Elijah Wilson - 2027 Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='402375' first='Evenson' last='Malaska'] - 2026 Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1831654' first='Gerald' last='Ackah'] - 2026 Running Back
Hayden Flores - 2027 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1211251' first='Jaytee' last='Johnson'] - 2026 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
[player_tooltip player_id='1348269' first='Judson' last='Gilliland'] - 2026 Running Back/Linebacker
[player_tooltip player_id='1701308' first='Kaden' last='Bachus'] - 2026 Linebacker
[player_tooltip player_id='1662796' first='Lane' last='Lewis'] - 2027 Tight End
Max Baca - 2027 Defensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1173898' first='Stone' last='Perkins'] - 2027 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='473852' first='Taven' last='Brown'] - 2027 Running Back
[player_tooltip player_id='502549' first='Tucker' last='Brown'] - 2027 Running Back/Defensive Back

2025 SCHEDULE

Sept. 5th - Yukon
- The 2025 football season will open up at home with Canadian County Bedlam and the Broncos will be looking to continue their dominance in the series and kick off the year with a bang. Mustang won last year's meeting 52-14. They've won seven in a row and 11 out of the last 12 meetings.
Sept. 12th - AT Broken Arrow
- Mustang hits the road to face a Broken Arrow team that has state title aspirations in 2025. The Broncos won a thrilling overtime contest 49-48 last season. And that meeting was actually the first time that Mustang and Broken Arrow had squared off since meeting in the playoffs from 2013-2015.
Sept. 19th - AT Westmoore
- The Broncos will wrap up non-district play in week three, on the road, against Westmoore. Mustang beat the Jaguars 54-30 in last season's meeting and it was somewhat sweet for the Broncos as their season came to an end against Westmoore during the 2023 season.
Sept. 26th - AT Moore
- District play will open up on the road in week four with Mustang's third straight road contest as they face Moore. The Broncos lost 21-20 last season and have dropped three straight to the Lions. And if the last two meetings were any indication, (44-41 in 2021) we could see another close game.
Oct. 3rd - Enid
- After three straight games away from home, Mustang finally returns home for their week five meeting with Enid. Mustang beat the Plainsmen 33-32 last season and while the Broncos have a lot of familiarity with the majority of their opponents, that 2024 meeting was their first with Enid since 2006.
Oct. 10th - AT Jenks
- Mustang returns to the road for a district showdown with Jenks to kick off the second half of the regular season. The Broncos fell to Jenks 45-13 in district play last season. Prior to that, Jenks had escaped back to back playoff meetings (‘21 & ‘22) with one possession victories.
Oct. 16th - Edmond North
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Mustang will host Edmond North in another important district contest. Mustang has owned this series against the Huskies and are looking to win their 11th consecutive game in the series. They beat Edmond North 45-27 in last season's meeting.
Oct. 24th - Bixby
- If Mustang wants to contend for the district and eventually state championship, Bixby is the measuring stick for that ultimate success in Class 6A-1. They met last season in week eight, Bixby won 64-35. The Broncos want to prove they belong with the best of the best and Bixby has been the best.
Oct. 31st - AT Norman
- In week nine, Mustang will hit the road to square off with Norman in a late regular season game that will have major playoff implications. The Broncos will also be looking to turn things around in the series with the Tigers. They've lost the last two after winning five of the previous six.
Nov. 7th - Deer Creek
- In the regular season finale, Mustang hosts Deer Creek and it's a game that should be circled on the calendar. For one, playoff seeding will be on the line here. But these two have played some absolute classics in the last three years. Mustang lost 27-20 last year but the last three games have been one score games.

NOTABLE

Head coach Lee Blankenship is heading into his seventh season as head coach of the Broncos. During the 2024 season, Blankenship reached a personal milestone in his career as a football coach. Early on in the season, the Mustang head coach won his 100th game of his career. He's had stops at Gore, Beggs, Bartlesville and now Mustang. 38 of his victories has been at Mustang, where he's spent the majority of his time as a head coach. He was knocking on the door of a state championship during one of his seasons at Beggs. But as we start looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Broncos look like they have a team on paper that could end up making plenty of noise in Class 6A-1. It's been a few years since Mustang was among the elite in Class 6A-1, with their last semifinal appearance coming in 2021. And it's been a while since they were playing for the state championship.
