I’ve compiled a list of these top-performing underclassmen in a 2-part series. Without further delay, this is part two of the Top Performing Underclassmen QBs.
Colt is another underclassman who knows how to spin it. He spreads the ball around and doesn’t lock onto a target. The sophomore QB has looked like a successful predecessor to Cadin Olson for Armstrong. He throws a good ball with good placement on his passes. Sprankle throws with good anticipation and keeps his eyes downfield while being pressured. Colt’s accuracy is consistent on all three levels. He’s competitive and displays adequate football intelligence. He has good footwork inside the pocket and executes overall QB mechanics with precision. It will be intriguing to watch Sprankle compete coming down the stretch this season.
Strader is a dual-threat prospect that has tremendous explosion with the ball. He has a strong arm that will continue to improve with every rep. He has crisp execution when it comes to RPOs and play action. He’s a downright weapon on zone read keepers in the rushing attack. Strader has the speed and elusiveness to break a TD run at any time. He showcases good zip on his throws on out-breaking routes. He throws his passes with good timing and accuracy, especially across the middle of the field. Aaron has displayed next-level athleticism with the ball in his hands. “Oobi’s” speed has also been seen on jet sweeps this season.
Carson is another promising QB in the ‘26 class. He has a quick release and is decisive with the ball. He executes play-action and RPOs with precision. He throws accurately with good timing on his passes. Carson has good placement on his throws and is an accurate passer on the run. He isn’t afraid to give his WRs a chance at the deep ball. He’s athletic enough to buy time scrambling while keeping his eyes downfield. Bellinger gets the ball out quickly on 3-step timing passes. He’s a competitor that gives his team a chance to win. The sophomore QB has been a big reason for Avonworth’s success this season in the first half of the year.
Highlights
Harris is another field general that displays ability ahead of his time. The sophomore prospect is a dual-threat weapon who isn’t afraid to go deep. He has a strong enough arm to consistently complete 5-step routes. His athleticism keeps defenses honest with the threat of him calling his own number. His speed is a defensive liability once he breaks containment and leaves the pocket. He’s looked accurate completing play-action fades and posts this season. Harris has the type of athletic ability that will allow him to be versatile if he so chooses.
Highlights
Reed is a 6’4, 160-pound athlete who moves fluidly for his size. He has distributed the ball pretty evenly among his targets. He’s mobile and able to extend plays when he scrambles. Reed has done a good job of putting air on his deep passes in 2023 so his WRs can run under the throw. He gets the ball to the right playmakers on fades and seam verticals. Tristan also plays DB and runs a 4.6 40-yard dash to go along with his frame. Reed’s throwing ability will continue to progress the more reps he gets. Tristan is one of the biggest reasons for Washington’s sensational start in ‘23.
Highlights
Vann is an athlete and leader in general for his team. His size and agility are notable assets at 6’5, 230 lbs. He’s a competitor that legitimately shows promise at DE and QB. He’s physical off of the edge and uses his hands well overall. He’s a disciplined defensive player that has the height to get into throwing lanes and bat passes down. He’s capable of creating pressure off the edge and gives a consistent good effort. Offensively, he has a strong enough arm to go downfield on deep passes. He throws with good anticipation and timing on RPO passes. He has good ball placement and accuracy completing passes on the run. His toughness and agility are also assets when running the zone read.
Highlights
Drew is a competitor who hasn’t backed down this season. He’s a tough prospect that has a lot of time left for positional advancement. He’s a competitor who has experienced success passing this season. He throws a nicely placed 50/50 ball with touch. Drew does a good job of not staring down his targets when surveying. He’s athletic and able to extend the play by scrambling. Ross has adequate arm strength that will only get better with time. Drew displays good timing when he decides to go downfield. He’s athletic enough to gash a defense when he decides to rush it. It will be fun watching Ross compete in the second half of the season.
