The 2022 football season has come and gone. Once again, the football season has just flown by. We’re a few weeks removed from the final football games of the 2022 season, and we’ve been recapping the year in football ever since. In today’s post, it’s all about the breakout stars from the 2022 season. For just about every player on this list, they were flying under the radar or only known around their school and community. By the end of the season, they became some of the best players in their respective classes and in the state this year. Keep it locked into Prep Redzone Oklahoma every single day for more postseason content!
It seemed like a matter of time before Heritage Hall’s Andy Bass Andy Bass 6’0″ | 195 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2024 State OK became a player on this list. Throughout the entire offseason, we kept hearing how the Chargers had a junior quarterback that was about to provide their offense with an instant impact in the pass and run game. After having to sit out his sophomore season, Bass lived up to the hype and provided that immediate spark on the offensive side of the ball. He could throw the ball and had several different weapons at wide receiver, but it’s his abilities in the running game that really turned him into a breakout star for the Chargers. You combine that, with him sharing the backfield with senior running back River Faulkner River Faulkner 5’11” | 205 lbs | ATH Heritage Hall | 2023 State OK and that’s a big reason why they are 3A state champs today.
Highlights
Tuttle expected to get an impact from sophomore standout Brady Mcadoo Brady Mcadoo 6’0″ | 180 lbs | RB Tuttle | 2025 State OK this season but they weren’t sure in what capacity that would be. We’ve written this before, but when we checked out Tuttle back in September, one of Tuttle’s coaches talked about how McAdoo was an impact player but they weren’t sure what he truly could be. It feels like he’s just scratching the surface on what he can be as a player. This season, McAdoo had an impact as a running back, wide receiver, defensive back and then also returned kicks. McAdoo was a big time player for the Tigers when he was on the field and that was just about every minute of the game. McAdoo has a very high ceiling and the future is very bright for him moving forward.
Highlights
The first of several defensive players is Carl Albert sophomore Caden Davis Caden Davis 6’0″ | LB Carl Albert | 2025 State OK . Back in the summer, the Carl Albert coaches told us about Davis and how he was primed for a breakout season. He lived up to the hype. Davis finished up the year with 20 sacks on the season and was one of the more dominant defensive linemen in Class 5A this season. Davis as a prospect is going to be interesting to watch moving forward. We’re curious to see if he’s more of a defensive end, tackle or maybe he could even be a linebacker in the right system. But this season, Davis was absolutely dominant and similar to a few other Carl Albert standouts, it seemed like Davis had some of his best performances in the biggest games of the year.
A perfect example of why we talk about breakout stars is Millwood sophomore linebacker Cameron Carter Cameron Carter 6’1″ | LB Millwood | 2025 State OK . We didn’t know about Carter before the last game of the year when Millwood played Washington in the Class 2A state championship game. Carter was arguably the most dominant player on the field when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. It felt like every time Washington got stuck in the backfield, it was Carter that was breaking through the line of scrimmage and bringing down the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage. Carter was absolutely dominant and feels like a prototypical middle linebacker that is ready to absolutely explode. The more his sophomore tape makes the rounds, his recruitment should take off.
Another game-wrecker on the defensive side of the ball this season was Booker T Washington senior defensive lineman Elias Sherman Elias Sherman 6’2″ | DL Booker T Washington | 2023 State OK . The Hornet standout is a perfect example of another player who has earned “breakout star” status after going from a solid starter to one of the most productive players at his position in the state. Sherman lived in opposing backfields and was right there with Davis at Carl Albert in terms of getting to the quarterbacks. Sherman racked up the sacks throughout the season and even though Booker T Washington didn’t have the season that they would have liked, they still had several players dramatically raise their stock with outstanding performances and Sherman was one of the top guys.
Down in Class A, Pocola has a few young players that will have the Indians be a very interesting team to watch moving forward and one of them is junior standout Garrett Scott Garrett Scott 6’2″ | 170 lbs | ATH Pocola | 2024 State OK . Back in August, we knew Scott more for being a basketball player but that athleticism he showed on the court absolutely translated to the football field. Scott would become Pocola’s leading wide receiver and was also a big part of what they did on the defensive side of the ball at defensive back. Scott is just a fantastic athlete with good size, speed and quickness. And he’s also incredibly strong. Scott has become one of the better 2024 dual-sport prospects in the state. After a breakout 2022 season, he’ll be hungry for more when 2023 rolls around.
Similar to players like Bass and Davis, Deer Creek sophomore quarterback Grady Adamson Grady Adamson 6’1″ | 215 lbs | QB Deer Creek | 2025 State OK was on the radar as a potential breakout star this season. Adamson replaced Brett Pense at the quarterback position and the Antlers didn’t take any kind of step back this season and they were one of the top contenders in 6A-2 all season. Adamson has joined some of the other top quarterbacks in the state’s 2025 class as a legitimate prospect for the next level. The 2025 quarterback class is incredibly talented already and Adamson is the next name that you need to know in that group. Adamson has size, arm talent and didn’t make very many mistakes in his first season as QB1. We’re looking forward to seeing his growth moving forward.

We mentioned this a few times throughout the season, we thought that Collinsville was going to take a step back following winning the 2021 state championship. However, despite having to replace some serious talent, the Cardinals were right back in the mix in Class 5A this season. And senior quarterback Kaden Rush Kaden Rush 6’3″ | 200 lbs | QB Collinsville | 2023 State OK kept the Cardinals in the mix this fall. Rush had the tall task of replacing a very experienced quarterback in Andrew Carney from last year’s title team. He did have a leg up coming into the year because he received some playing time last season during the regular season when Carney missed a few weeks with an injury. And the Cardinal offense didn’t miss a step as Rush performed incredibly well.

Wagoner came into the 2022 season and were incredibly confident as they made a move at quarterback. They moved senior Gabe Rodriguez Gabe Rodriguez 5’11” | ATH Wagoner | 2023 State OK so Kale Charboneau Kale Charboneau 6’0″ | 210 lbs | ATH Wagoner | 2025 State OK could take over at QB1. So Charboneau has to be a breakout star but this also is about the overall Wagoner offense. With Charboneau taking over at quarterback, it freed up Rodriguez to become a dynamic weapon on offense in the run game and was one of Wagoner’s best wide receivers. And then Charboneau had one of his best performances in the championship game as they stunned Cushing 24-21 after losing to the Tigers 42-0 in the regular season. Charboneau was a very physical runner and led a Wagoner drive that took up five plus minutes to set up the game-winning field goal.
Highlights
Similar to Rush at Collinsville, another quarterback who was patient and waited for his turn behind an experienced quarterback is Norman North senior Kamden Sixkiller Kamden Sixkiller 6’4″ | QB Norman North | 2023 State OK . And just like Rush, Sixkiller was a dual-threat quarterback who was just as dynamic in the running game as he was as a drop back passer. Unfortunately for Sixkiller and Norman North, he had his senior season cut short towards the end of the year with an injury. But that doesn’t take away from his rise up the charts when it comes to 2023 quarterbacks in the state. Sixkiller waited behind Gavin Frakes, who earned playing time at New Mexico State as a freshman. And just like Rush, he made the most of his opportunity this fall with the Timberwolves.
The final defense-only player on this breakdown is Owasso senior linebacker Kunta Jordan Kunta Jordan 6’0″ | LB Owasso | 2023 State OK . Similar to Millwood’s Carter who stood out in the final game of the year, Jordan stood out to us in the first game of the year. Jordan was an absolute game-wrecker at the linebacker position. From the opening game, it became very obvious that not only was Jordan going to be one of the breakout stars of the young season, but he was going to be one of the better players at his postiion in the state, regardless of class. Owasso had a roller coaster of a season but one of the more consistent players for them all year has been Jordan at the linebacker position. He definitely became one of the better linebackers in a very loaded 2023 class.
Southeast was one of the best teams in the state that missed out on the playoffs and that was because they were in arguably the toughest districts in the state. But despite missing out on the postseason, they watched their junior running back Rodney Fields Rodney Fields 6’0″ | RB Del City | 2024 State OK become one of the top guys at his position in Class 5A. Fields had an unbelievable start to his junior season. Fields was great in the running game but he also gave the Spartans a boost as a receiver out of the backfield. He was one of the more versatile backs in Class 5A this season and had such a big impact on the offensive side of the ball. Fields is just one part of a “big three” on the Southeast offense that will be back next season and the Spartans will be hungry for a playoff run.
Coming up this weekend, we’re announcing our pick for freshman of the year and one of the main contenders for that has to be Hennessey quarterback Titan Hix Titan Hix 6’3″ | 210 lbs | QB Locust Grove | 2026 State OK . From the very first game of the year, Hix showed that he was going to be an impact player this fall. Hix was a true dual-threat and was just as dangerous in the passing game as he was in the running game. Hix put up some monster numbers and he already looks the part as a quarterback prospect. Hix is going to be a fun player to watch over the next three seasons. From throwing to running the ball, Hix should routinely be one of the top producing players in the state. We think that Hix is going to just continue getting better and better and could end up being a top prospect.
Highlights
Muldrow has been one of the better athletes in the state for the last few years. He’s been a standout football player, an outstanding basketball player and a state champion track athlete. But this year, Collins would reach new heights as he became one of the best running backs in the state. Collins would eclipse 2,000 yards for the season and it seemed like every single week he was putting up numbers as a running back that ended up making him one of the top performers. The only time Collins was bottled up was when they were missing three starting offensive linemen and faced top-ranked Lincoln Christian. Other than that, Collins had an outstanding senior season and truly became one of the top guys at the position this fall.
Similar to a few other players on this list, we knew about Enid senior wide receiver Tykie Andrews Tykie Andrews 6’0″ | WR Enid | 2023 State OK heading into the 2022 season. But we certainly did not expect him to become one of the top wide receivers in the state. And that’s exactly what happened as Andrews would put up some of the best receiving numbers during the 2022 season. He caught 135 passes for over 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns. Andrews not only put up those numbers but he did it every single week, no matter who the opponent was. Andrews also made things look normal and just part of the routine. It seemed like every week, Andrews was catching ten passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. That was a normal week of football for the Enid breakout star.
