. Last year, Rodriguez doubled as the quarterback and safety. This year, Rodriguez has been more of a running back and wide receiver on offense and has flourished in that role. He’s able to have a greater impact on the game on offense and then he still has his production on the defensive side of the ball. Rodriguez is up there in tackles for the second straight year and is one of the leaders on the team in pass breakups. Then you turn around and see that Rodriguez is Wagoner’s leading rusher and receiver on offense and sees the true impact he has. He has over 700 yards rushing and another 600+ yards receiving. He’s also accounted for 20 touchdowns on the season between offense and special teams. It should be no surprise that Rodriguez is a complete player. That’s what older brother Malcolm was when he was at Wagoner. He’s now a rookie with the Detroit Lions.

. Last season, Rodriguez starred for the Bulldogs at quarterback on offense and then safety on defense. This season, Rodriguez is still a standout at the safety position on defense. But on offense, Rodriguez is moving around and playing a variety of positions this year as arguably Wagoner’s most versatile player over the last few years. Rodriguez has the DNA to be one of the more important players to Wagoner over the last decade. He’s the younger brother of former Bulldog Malcolm Rodriguez, who is now a rookie linebacker with the Detroit Lions. Gabe is looking to help lead the Bulldogs to a state championship like older brother Malcolm was able to do several years ago. In Friday’s match-up, Rodriguez’s abilities on offense will be incredibly important.

Wagoner had somewhat of a slow start this season and that happened for a few reasons. The Bulldogs played a tough non-district schedule, featuring two games against top five teams in Class 5A, including top-ranked Coweta. And the Bulldogs have also done different things with their lineup on the offensive side of the ball. Senior

Rodriguez is also a standout safety and he’s arguably the best player on the Wagoner defense. The Bulldogs might be flying under the radar as we head into the playoffs but anyone who’s watched Wagoner over the last decade should know not to overlook the Bulldogs during the playoffs.
