After a week 0 setback, Piedmont returned to the field on Thursday night. It didn't take long for them to take a lead. Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2244459' first='Brody' last='Williams'] was a workhorse on the opening driving, caping it off with a bruising TD run. With stifling defense and powerhouse running, Piedmont would pour it on for a 48-7 win.   Piedmont will take advantage of a bye week, before traveling south to face Norman North on September 18th. While Southmoore will look to bounce back next Friday in a rivalry match up vs Moore.    Mason was all over the field for Piedmont as a high motor defensive playmaker. His crowning achievement was a strip sack in the second quarter. He timed the snap perfectly off the edge, ran the QB down from behind and knocked it loose. Which led to a scoop and score for a teammate. Simply gets down hill, gets off blocks and makes plays. Also had an impressive one v one tackle in the flats on a RB swing pass. Should easily clear 100 tackles this season, with quite a few of them also coming behind the line of scrimmage.     Piedmont rode the promising sophomore early on the opening drive. He ran with intent, often falling forward to gain more yards. Then scored the opening tuddy. While he was productive on the ground, it does feel like Williams collegiate future could lie on the defensive side of the ball. Pairs with Mason to give them an athletic and rangy off the ball linebacker duo. If he takes cues from Mason, Williams should emerge as a tackling machine.     Controlled the point of attack for Piedmont's suffocating run defense. Even got his named called a couple times. One instance, Cruz bullrushed his blocker back into the QB and he reached out a giant paw to pull down the QB and offensive lineman at the same time. Another time he was down blocked, but he fought it off and had the quickness to recover and grab the running back in the hole. Also nearly ripped the ball out of the RB's hand. It's clear Cruz is the key in the middle to keep his teammates clean to go make plays.     Defensive back who is not afraid to stick his nose in to provide run support. Came up multiple times and made very tough tackles. Willing to throw his body around and make good hits. Also had one of the plays of the game when he scooped up Mason's forced fumble for a long scoop and score.     Backus capped off a couple drives with short touchdown runs. He's another example of the deep depth Piedmont has in their backfield. Has a nose for the endzone. Is tough to bring down thanks to his low center of gravity and power. Productive performance to build off his 1,000+ yard and 8 touchdown sophomore campaign.     Millhouse is a promising sophomore. Only flashed in the first half when he display perfect form to stop a QB scramble short of the sticks on third down. But have seen Millhouse on the hardwood, where he's an athletic and physical guard who started last year for Piedmont. So it checks out that he could also be recruit on the gridiron as well.     Davis came into the game and provided a spark rushing the passer off the edge. Had a pair of late second quarter sacks that helped secure the first half donut. A name to watch if Piedmont is to continue to be a havoc causing and tough defense.
