After playing mostly in the box as a junior, Lockett has seen reps at deep safety this season, but has also crept back into the box at times. He can excel in either role and will continue to improve in coverage with the more experience he gets on the back end. Lockett fits the run very well for a DB and has the athleticism to roam in the secondary. He’s very good at coming downhill and playing in zone coverage between the sticks, which will likely be his role at the next level, where Lockett has a high ceiling.

Lockett was a difficult evaluation having played mostly as an undersized OLB last season but will likely play safety at the next level. In man coverage, Lockett is a work in progress while not having much experience in that area given his role last season, but has all of the tools to be a very good safety at the next level with D1 potential. He’s very comfortable playing tight to the line of scrimmage and playing the run physically which will translate well in college.

Lockett provided a lot of value in all three phases of the game but played well as a box safety on defense. While he’s not the biggest athlete, Lockett plays very physically and above his size. He plays the run really well and can walk up to the line of scrimmage as a linebacker too. Lockett plays with great effort and tenacity and is always flying to the ball while being a sure tackler.

A JV player from last season that could see increased time at the varsity level is 2026 DB Zaiiden Lockett Zaiiden Lockett 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB/ATH Morgantown | 2026 State WV . He flashed some good things on his sophomore JV film that make us think he can develop into a varsity starter as soon as this season.

Lockett posted his sophomore film since our spring rankings update, and we like the potential he showed as a young player in 2023. He’ll debut as a Top 15 DB in the 2026 class for now with the potential to climb higher once he sees more of a starting role in the future. The first trait we liked about Lockett when evaluating his film was his effort on special teams. That’s always a telling sign when watching film to see who is putting in high effort in all three phases of the game and not just on offense and defense. Lockett is also always around the ball and made several interceptions and fumble recoveries last season on varsity and JV. He appears to be a strong safety prospect who has the athleticism to play on the back end or creep into the box and play closer to the line of scrimmage.”
