Max “Swervin” Mervin is one of the most versatile prospects that I have scouted. Over the season, he played QB, WR, and CB. I consider him to be a Swiss-army knife that can attack teams in a multitude of ways. When lined up as a QB, the read option was vital part of Ponderosa’s offense, with Mervin running more than he would throw the ball. However, his stats are as follows: He threw for 328 yards, 5 TD, 5 INT with a 44.4% completion rate. He ran 72 times for 472 yards and 6 touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught the ball 34 times for 555 yards and 6 touchdowns. Mervin has good throw power, and can throw the ball downfield. He’s got a zippy release and throws on time. Max has good short accuracy, and is accurate while throwing on the run. Mervin has elite athletic ability due to elite speed, very good acceleration and change of direction. He has home-run speed and when the ball is in his hands, he is gone. Mervin excels out in open space. Mervin has good mental processing, can find the void in the zone and make an accurate throw. As a runner, he chooses the correct gaps to run through, demonstrating good vision. Mervin will get physical with defenders, and put his shoulder down to create extra yardage. Very good catching skills. He has a fluid catching motion, which makes it look easy. He has good body control. For example, he adjusted above himself to catch the ball in the endzone, control his body to have 2 feet in bounds. Mervin can create separation using his athletic ability. Using his elite speed, he can take the top off defenses and make them pay. Mervin is an exciting prospect that deserves more eyes on him.

Mervin is an interesting prospect. He is mainly used as a WR, but has had a majority of snaps at QB as a wildcat. He accounted for 3 receptions, 11 yards for 1 TD, and 3 rushes for 20 yards. Mervin has home run speed and makes defenders miss in open space. Good ball concentration, as he caught an overthrown ball and adjusted his feet to stay in bounds for the touchdown. As a QB, he has a fast release. Tight and accurate spiral, will make plays off script.

Mervin is a shifty receiver that has some physicality to him and is able to break through arm tackles. He is able to line up at multiple positions and make things happen after the catch. He shows a good burst of speed being able to get behind the corner and pull away after he reels in the catch. He has soft hands and can make catches in traffic outside of his frame. He will be a receiver with a lot of upside to keep an eye on moving forward.

Mervin is a do-all athlete with the skills to fill multiple roles on offense, defense, and special teams. He is a speedy route runner and does a fantastic job locating and high-pointing the ball. When making catches, he makes sure to finish the play away from the defender to come down with the ball. Mervin is an exciting player to watch, and with the sophomore season he had, his junior season is sure to be even more impressive.

Mervin’s high school debut ended with him landing third in receiving yards (521) and fourth in receiving touchdowns (5) among the state’s freshmen receivers. He is a strong route runner who does an excellent job of stacking the defender and exploiting the open spaces within the defense’s secondary. Mervin’s production came from his ability to be a dangerous option in the slot last season, making this year’s transition with a new QB one to watch.
