Coellner has filled in for Carmel for the past 2 years and has improved so much, it’s impressive. He’s a confident quarterback who knows where he’s supposed to go with the ball and has the arm to make the throw. He completed 61% of his throws this year for 1900 yards for 17 TDs. He’s a pocket passer and will need protection in front of him, but when he gets hot he’s as tough to slowdown as any QB in the state.

It has been a steady road of development for Coellner and this weekend was good to see, because he’s developed physically as well as mentally. He’s got a big arm, a nice build, and sits pretty in the pocket. His footwork is clearly something he’s spent a ton of time working on and cleaning up and it’s paying dividends already. His accuracy and timing was noticeably better and he didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger when he saw something come open. Of all the QBs who were there this weekend, it’s Coellner who has the most mystery around him when you look at his potential because it’s clear he’s on the right path.

Coellner is a young developing QB who has had some fairly special moments of flash this year. It’s not been a smooth ride for Coellner as he’s had his bumps and bruises that come along with learning the QB position, but at the end of the day, Carmel knows its football program is in good hands for the next few years. Coellner has a nice frame, is athletic enough to escape and stretch a play, and then has the arm talent to get the ball downfield while moving to either side. He’ll kill a defense with the read option if they don’t pay attention to his legs, but Coellner looks best in the pocket. When he has time to set his feet and go through his reads, he’s got the potential to be as dangerous as anyone. Right now, it’s about consistency and digesting his mistakes, but he’s done that for the most part this year. There’s no denying he’s a bit raw, but he’s also got the tools, potential, and time all on his side to develop into one of the best QBs in the state.
