Smitley is a linebacker more in the mold of a run defender. He has a thicker build and looks to have the strength to take on blockers and meet and standup running backs in the hole. In 1v1’s he held his own in coverage. Chase looked comfortable covering the flats and did a good job of not letting the tight end’s and running backs get vertical.

Smitley possesses a handful of traits that make you think he’s got a very bright future on the field. He seems to see the whole field and then has the athletic ability to string a play out and wrap up the tackle in open space. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and doesn’t make the same mistake twice. He’s instinctive and will try putting himself in a spot to make a play. As he gets more reps and sees things again and again, he will pick up on tendencies and shut them down.

Smitley is a very young and very raw, but promising linebacker for Carmel that we should take note of now. He’s got a good build, spends time in the weight room, and moves as well as any LB. While he hasn’t broken onto the Varsity scene quite yet, there’s a chance he gets there this fall. He’s able to rip the ball out and create turnovers which always helps a defense. I do think as he gets more comfortable and understands the small nuances of his defense, he will become a tackling machine.
