October is here and we have begun updating all of our prospect rankings throughout the website. Two weeks ago, we released our first watch list for the 2026 class. The first rankings for that class will come out in January. Last week, it was all about the 2025 class. We’ve updated those rankings to feature the top 75 sophomores in the state. You can check out the full rankings RIGHT HERE. This week, we take a look at some of the top juniors in Oklahoma with an update to the 2024 rankings. You can check out the full rankings RIGHT HERE.
In this post, we’re taking a look at five of the more versatile athletes in the 2024 rankings. Most of these prospects are standouts on both sides of the ball. And for all of them, we haven’t identified just one position that best suits them at the next level. Stay tuned throughout the week for more 2024 prospect breakdowns. And keep it locked in to Prep Redzone Oklahoma next week when we release our 2023 prospect rankings.
Piedmont standout Cannon Wood Cannon Wood 6’1″ | 215 lbs | ATH Piedmont | 2024 State OK is the first of several standouts on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball on this list. In fact, out of the five prospects on this breakdown, it’s hard to pinpoint which side of the ball we like Wood more on. On offense, Wood is a very physical runner but has shown breakaway speed in several weeks. Then on defense, Wood is an outstanding middle linebacker that can shut down the opponent’s running game. We see outstanding clips of Wood on both sides of the ball and with most two-way players, we usually have a lean. Not with Wood. And we’re going to get a good idea of how Wood stacks up against some of the better prospects in the 2024 class in the next two weeks. This week, Piedmont plays Bishop McGuinness and 2024’s #1 quarterback in River Warren River Warren 6’4″ | 195 lbs | QB Del City | 2024 State OK . Next week, the Wildcats wrap up the regular season against Carl Albert and 2024’s #1 running back in Xavier Robinson Xavier Robinson 6’2″ | 225 lbs | RB Carl Albert | 2024 State OK .

The top athlete prospect in the recent ranking update is Poteau standout Dax Collins Dax Collins 6’2″ | 180 lbs | ATH Poteau | 2024 State OK . He’s been that guy in our mind for a while now and despite dealing with an injury this season, he’s remained that. Whether it’s as a running back or a defensive back, Collins is a standout for the Pirates. Early on in the season, he was a two-way star. After suffering an injury early on in district play, Collins has returned to the field but has been limited on offense and has focused on the defensive side of the ball. We made the prediction prior to the season that Collins would have a junior season similar to what we saw from McAlester standout Erik McCarty Erik McCarty 6’2″ | 175 lbs | DB McAlester | 2023 State OK last year. And if Collins wouldn’t have gotten hurt, we might be looking at that type of year from the Poteau junior. Like McCarty, it’s likely that Collins will end up playing on the defensive side of the ball in college. But we can’t overlook how much of a playmaker Collins is on offense.

Hominy has been one of the best teams in Class A from the start of the season and despite playing a tough district schedule, the Bucks are still unbeaten coming into week nine. And leading the way has been junior standout Jaxon Woods Jaxon Woods 6’0″ | ATH Hominy | 2024 State OK . We knew about Woods after his breakout sophomore season last year at the quarterback position. And we thought that Woods would have the Bucks as a serious contender in Class A and that’s exactly how this season has played out so far. It seems like every time Hominy has a game against a ranked opponent, Woods ends up having one of his better performances. That’s the kind of play that we like to see from prospects at some of the smaller schools in the state. Against the better competition, how do they look? I think it’s safe to say that Woods has been one of the best players in Class A this season. But the one question we have is what position is he at the next level?
Right there with Woods for most improved prospect this season is Muskogee standout Kayden McGee Kayden McGee 6’1″ | WR Muskogee | 2024 State OK . We’ve watched McGee quite a bit over the last 18 months. Between 7v7 with Sooner 7 and then spring drills or games with Muskogee, McGee has been outstanding. When we first started watching McGee, we saw him as a wide receiver prospect. However, starting this year, McGee showcased the ability to play safety and the door opened for him to be a legitimate two-way prospect in the state’s 2024 class. And while he is still improving on the defensive side of the ball, what he’s doing so far this season on offense has been outstanding. McGee has scored a touchdown in all eight of Muskogee’s games this season and is a big reason why the Roughers have gone from a 2-8 team last year to 8-0 and on a crash course with #1 Stillwater for the district title in week ten. We think that this is just the beginning for McGee moving forward.
Millwood standout Micho Lavine Micho Lavine 6’3″ | 210 lbs | ATH Millwood | 2024 State OK isn’t making his debut on the 2024 rankings, but he is making his debut as an athlete instead of a running back prospect. After missing the majority of his sophomore season with a leg injury, Lavine was hungry to get back on the field and the Falcons have been outstanding so far this season, with their only blemish on the record being a close loss to Heritage Hall in the season opener. Lavine still lines up at running back occasionally, but he has become more of a goal line threat in terms of carries as a power runner. Lavine has also lined up as a tight end and then he’s been outstanding on the defensive side of the ball as a defensive end or linebacker. Seeing that kind of versatility from Lavine is the number one reason we moved Lavine over to the athlete position. After a breakout freshman season, Lavine is enjoying another strong season after missing last year. He’s been making up for lost time.
