The opening week of the West Virginia high school football season gave us plenty of standout performances across Class AAA. From big plays to players who consistently made an impact throughout the night, Week 1 featured several performances that deserve recognition. Here are the players who earned recognition for their Week 1 performances with film or stats available.

2027 Elkins RB [player_tooltip player_id='1155298' first='Seth' last='Robinson'] carried the load for the Tigers in a huge Week 1 performance against Lincoln, rushing 34 times for 326 yards and four touchdowns. With [player_tooltip player_id='864596' first='Jaden' last='Hatfield'] sidelined, Robinson took on a massive workload and showed he has the size and strength to handle that type of role, even if 35 carries is more than Elkins would ideally want to give him every week. The Tigers' physical offensive line deserves credit as well, creating room in the Wing-T for him to get downhill and punish defenses. He runs with great toughness, consistently breaking first and second contact to keep plays moving. This was a statement performance from Robinson and a big reason Elkins came away with the Week 1 win.

2027 Bridgeport RB/ATH/K showed why he is a true three-phase difference maker in the Indians' blowout win over Buckhannon-Upshur, rushing 8 times for 142 yards and three touchdowns while adding an interception, forced fumble and five touchbacks on special teams. He carries plenty of momentum from a 2,000-yard season last year, and now gets his dynamic backfield partner, [player_tooltip player_id='1154891' first='Gabe' last='Martin'], back healthy to help share the workload. That should keep him fresh while still giving him plenty of opportunities to produce in Bridgeport's single-wing offense, where he'll put up big numbers again. Williams will need another big performance with Martinsburg on the schedule this week.

He also brings a new wrinkle to his game in the Black Eagles' offense this season as the secondary option at running back behind [player_tooltip player_id='1309691' first='Malakhi' last='Hope'], where he rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown. Tyson also added a scoop-and-score fumble recovery on defense and will be a terror for opposing offenses all year.

Grigsby was electric with his legs, ripping off chunk runs and keeping plays alive when the pocket broke down while keeping his eyes downfield. Grigsby's ability to hurt defenses as both a passer and runner made him a difficult matchup all night, forcing Fairmont Senior to try to account for him in multiple ways. He also did a good job getting the ball to a bevvy of receivers, making this a complete performance from a true dual-threat quarterback.

A welcomed sight for Huskies fans, [player_tooltip player_id='1155316' first='David' last='Robinson Jr'] made his Herbert Hoover debut after transferring in from Capital and showed why he is ranked as the #1 RB in the 2027 class. Robinson carried 13 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns while adding a 70-yard receiving score, showing he can be a major playmaker in both phases of the offense. I thought he had more burst and juice compared to his junior season, getting into space quickly and consistently turning those opportunities into chunk plays. Robinson has impressive elusiveness for a bigger back and put that on display multiple times in Week 1. This was a strong first look in a new offense and a great way for the Huskies' star to start his senior season.

Following in the footsteps of his two older brothers, 2029 Brooke QB [player_tooltip player_id='1716397' first='Kamden' last='Sperringer'] had a huge debut behind center, becoming the third Sperringer to start at quarterback for the Bruins over the past six years. Sperringer was highly efficient against Lincoln County, going 9/10 for 263 yards and five touchdowns while showing impressive touch, accuracy, and ball placement throughout the night. He made several high-level throws and looked comfortable operating the offense in his first varsity action. The younger Sperringer may have the highest ceiling of the three, and while the competition will get tougher moving forward, this was an outstanding start to his varsity career in an eye-opening performance.

The 2027 WR gives the Bruins a big-play threat on the outside with his 6'4 frame and athleticism that gives him high upside. Horstin is a lanky athlete who can create matchup problems for defensive backs with his length and speed. Cooper was limited in the running game this week, but he's the type of athlete who will find ways to generate explosive plays regardless of how he's used. Cooper has freakish physical tools and athleticism, and is back after an injury-slowed sophomore year to make up for lost time. The Monarchs have a dynamic playmaker who can impact the game in a variety of ways, and Week 1 was a strong reminder of what Cooper brings to the field when healthy.

2028 Chapmanville K [player_tooltip player_id='1625334' first='Ashton' last='McClanahan'] was automatic in the Tigers' Week 1 win over Scott. He went 4/4 on PATs, 2/2 on field goals from 29 and 42 yards, and booted three touchbacks on kickoffs. His leg strength jumps out immediately, but the consistency and accuracy are what make McClanahan such a valuable weapon for Chapmanville and make him one of the best kickers in the state. He can impact the game from multiple spots in the kicking game and gives the Tigers someone they can trust when they need points or field position.
