Week 2 Instant Analysis

As always, we're player-focused, so we'll have plenty of “top performer” or “things you may have missed” content later in the week. This isn't that. Instead, I'm focused on reacting to some of the night's biggest storylines while talking about a few key performers.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Week 2 Instant Analysis</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Few Big Thursday Results</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While <em>most</em> of the teams around the state played Friday, a handful of games were moved to Thursday in anticipation of weather issues on Friday. A couple of results in particular caught my attention.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It's not that Southern Durham beat Jordan (which I thought might happen); it's that the Spartans won in such a blowout. I'm sure we'll hear more about that later in the week, but it's worth noting as we learn more about potential contenders.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Northside-Jacksonville took the next step in its rapid progression by beating rival Jacksonville, 14-6. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='534079' first='Rahlai' last='Anderson']</strong> had over 130 yards and two touchdowns, <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1607071' first='Matthew' last='Smoot']</strong> picked off a pass and recovered a fumble, and <strong>Eric Patrick</strong> sealed the win with a late interception.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Green Hope continues to look strong with a dominant win. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2344490' first='Amir' last='Davis']</strong> topped last week's three-touchdown game with four touchdowns on Thursday night.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'll have more on Hunt-Tarboro on Monday, but what a game. The Warriors, led by elite athlete <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1953755' first='Mez' last='Harris']</strong> and edge rusher <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2113127' first='Nicholas' last='Bynum']</strong>, staged a late, 20-point comeback to end Tarboro's 26-game winning streak.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Separating the Men From the Boys</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Before the season, I talked some about the gap potentially shrinking between the state's elites and the state's "Tier 2" teams. If Friday is any indication, I may have been premature in declaring that.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Providence Day, led by two <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='651159' first='Braylon' last='Clark']</strong> touchdown receptions from quarterback <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1610601' first='Cole' last='Cater']</strong>, easily turned aside a very good Rolesville team, 34-0. The Providence Day defense was once again dominant and continued the trend of only having to play its starters for a handful of plays in the second half. I doubt that happens next week against Hough, but that's kind of the point. Nobody is challenging Providence Day this year except another elite.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Grimsley looks even better than last year. After <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2170655' first='Alex' last='Cooper']</strong> announced himself at receiver last week, it was Independence transfer <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2112027' first='Zakai' last='Milton']'s</strong> turn this week against a very good West Forsyth team. The Whirlies allowed an opening-drive field goal, then shut the Titans out for the remainder of the game in a 39-3 win. Milton had three touchdowns from <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1048930' first='Brody' last='Lowe']</strong>, while <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1815393' first='Ty' last='Shoemake']</strong> showed once again why he's one of the top running backs in the 2028 class.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Whirlies are also going outside of their association for a regular-season challenge later this season, with a trip to Richmond, Virginia, to play one of the top teams in that state.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>On Thursday, Millbrook won its second-straight shutout, with <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='485965' first='Bryson' last='Gray']</strong> throwing three long touchdown passes, including one to breakout candidate <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2246998' first='Brian' last='Leacock']</strong>. The Wildcats look as good as anyone in the state through two games. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'm taking note as we await Hough-Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday. Are the Crusaders an elite team, or are they also in that strong bucket of really good teams that is still a ways behind the best of the best?</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading {"level":3} --> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Level-Setting</h3> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>One of the toughest things to do early in the year is understanding level-setting. There's so much turnover at the high school level that aside from a handful of elites, it can take half a season to figure out which teams had an out-of-character Week 1 and which teams are simply better or worse than we thought.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>A few teams showed obvious bounce-backs: teams that clearly underperformed in Week 1. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I picked Garner to upset Millbrook (really, I hedged and said the Trojans would give the Wildcats a game) only to see the Wildcats win in a huge shutout. The Trojans bounced back with a big win over Laney. The running game got going, and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1625015' first='Christian' last='Ormandy']</strong> connected on two long touchdowns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While I didn't rank Sun Valley in my preseason <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/08/2026-north-carolina-high-school-football-primer/">6A Top 10</a>, they were just outside, and I was fairly surprised at how badly they were beaten in Week 1 by Lake Norman.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Spartans responded with a huge Week 2 win over Mooresville. <strong>Greyson Hensley</strong> hit <strong>Amari Baker</strong> late for a game-winning touchdown and a two-point conversion. Last week's blowout loss happened, but the Sun Valley fans in my life are quite happy to be 1-1 after this two-game stretch.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>On the flip side of that, I may not be talking enough about Lake Norman. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1616126' first='Kaden' last='Craft']</strong> is off to a stellar start, and he's using his legs more, something that could help him as the year progresses. The Wildcats have now allowed seven total points in two games.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Scotland County and Richmond Senior renewed their rivalry last night, and it was all Scots until a lightning delay pushed the second half to Friday. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1858055' first='Mike' last='McLean']</strong> scored twice to help put the Scots up 20-0 on Thursday, and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='651255' first='Samier' last='Pate']</strong> scored on Friday to push the lead to 26-0. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1630694' first='Chris' last='George']</strong> also had a long touchdown and a fumble recovery in a 26-13 win. That's a big win after the Scots were defeated 25-22 by Asheboro in Week 1.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Finally, an NCISAA team I'm still trying to figure out. Jay M. Robinson shut down the Charlotte Country Day offense in Week 1. I'm starting to think that said a lot about Robinson. Country Day picked up a wildly impressive 15-7 win over a strong Charlotte Catholic team on Friday. After falling behind 7-0, the Country Day defense pitched a second-half shutout.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><em>Obviously, I can't hit everything in this one piece, but what did I miss?
